Sometimes, don't you feel like freakin' screamin'!

I have yet another $600 coin I received that I have to return. Another $17 down the drain in back-and-forth postage because the dealer never supplied images. Damn!

Wow. I did not need to see that.

I will have creepy nightmares, I know it. "thanks alot"

Why buy like that? Have you had great success before?

Don't buy without images. That's my policy. I've probably missed out on some nice coins here and there, but I'm sure I've missed quite a few headaches too. I've heard a few dealers say they don't have time or whatever else, but it seems in today's era of Internet bidding/shopping, dealers need to invest in a digital camera (or even a staff member to image the coins). I'm quite sure it would be worth it in the end!

For the millionth time, buying a coin based on an image is often no better than buying a coin from a blind ad. Images often don't show carbon flecks on Unc. copper or silver, the often don't show hairlines on Unc. & PF coins, and they often don't show a toned coin's true colors. And that's if the person imaging the coins tries to be candid showing their images.

If you do not want to accept this fact and continue to buy coins in this fashion, then I guarantee you will have these kind of problems.

Yeah, some images aren't great....I'll give you that...but at least they give you some idea. No pic gives you NO idea. I'd rather have some idea than no idea personally.

That's why I like CRO, they don't have time to do the imaging yet they send them out to be professionally imaged for them. Seems to work out pretty well.

I hate to simply write off a dealer I've had some good dealings with based on a couple of bad coins. But, I'm also tired of paying all that darn postage!

If it's a dealer you know and trust, they should know what you like, can you get their opinion at least before it's shipped?

DOH - I spent a number of years looking at coin images on websites and then went to shows where I was able to view these coins in person. If you are not buying PF or Unc. coins, the hairlines and carbon flecks won't be as significant issues as would be otherwise the case, ditto re toning on particular coins. Still, in my opinion, if one is making a significant $ purchase, he / she needs to see the coin, or else, have someone he / she trusts see it.

Ie., there's an Unc. Classic Head Large Cent that will be auctioned at the end of July. Nice ones are hard to find, and I've been looking for one for quite some time. It's a five figure coin. I can't see it, nor can my rep view it. So, I'm not bidding on it.

I swear, after all is said and done the post office makes out better than either the buyer or seller!

The dealer knows how picky I am, yet this still slipped through. I think many of you (once I supply pix here) might think I was nuts. But there were some red flags that made be rethink keeping the coin. Perhaps the dealer just spent a few moments looking at it, noticed it had no noticeable marks, dings, scratches or obvious cleaning and sent it off. Well, it was okay as far as that goes but it had something else going on that was weird. I'll explain more once the pix are up.

Re: Slabbed coins - There are some coins that LIVE within clear plastic and wear their labels with pride... while there are others that HIDE behind scratched plastic and are simply dragged along by a label. Then there are those coins that simply hang out, naked and free image

  • This can work both ways- there's a dealer who doesn't post pics whose coins have always been super- he obviously has a better eye and more experience than I do. I am convinced that if he'd posted pics of the 3 coins I've bought from him that those coins would have been GONE before I ever had the chance to buy them.

Dick Osburn had a NGC-63 Proof Cameo 20 cent piece that wasn't imaged on his website last November, along with all of his other inventory. I viewed it in hand at Baltimore and asked to work out a layaway plan, since I knew it would be my only shot at it. That didn't happen, but I had hoped it would be my little secret while I tried to scrape the funds together. It sold sight seen at a rinky dink show in Texas one week before F.U.N., where I would have been prepared to buy it. It'll come around again. They all do.image

This one little phrase has gotten me into more trouble than I care to remember!
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    The name is LEE!
  • If the pictures are good they are worth it. Teletrade has great pix and I have been 90% satisfied with their coins. Ebay I dont use since the pictures stink.
