  • Really hard to tell from the photos. Could be anywhere from AU58 to MS66. If I had to guess, I'd say it's MS65.

  • If that is a 1921-S, the coin has a phenomenal strike for that date and is worth a significant premium. Hard to assign a grade from the pics.

    I think I see high-point wear. So I'm going to guess 58.

Which means, of course, that it is likely graded 65 or better. image

The second set of pics are a million times better than the first, that's for sure. The coin looks amazing..the strike is insane. Any reason it's not in a holder already? Crack out perhaps?

AU58, very crisp skrike but the toining makes me think a possible old cleaning/dip, which might be a possible reason for no holder.

  • Most of my coins are from my grandfather's collection and I am a YN...I have never had any coins slabbed before, but I will probably get this one slabbed at the Baltimore Coin Show...Where do you think you see high point wear?...Thanks, Joe.

It does look nice. Hopefully it's the 'real deal'. I talked to a dealer at the Clearwater show who submitted a high grade MS sharply struck 24S Buff from a fellow's set, that came back BB'd for an added mintmark.

  • Thats a hard one to tell. Looks like there may be some wear on the hip / flank area and perhaps the shoulder on the reverse. Its one ofd those coins that you just got to tilt in your hand and see what happens to the luster . Nice coin either way.
  • I was planning on submitting this in Baltimore...can anyone tell me how to submit it...what info to give...how much it costs to submit it to PCGS, etc. because this will be my first submission.

I would give it a 58. Nice coin!

For those who know, won't the graders look over your coins first before you submit them at shows to give a "professional opinion"? I think you may need to be a member of the CU 1st to have privileges to submit at shows, just like mail order submissions.

Obverse looks like a 65, but the reverse looks like a 58. We really need larger images to determine MS versus AU.

Also, the coin does not look dipped in my opinion.

I think that there is slight high point wear -- AU58.
  • jomjom Posts: 3,492 ✭✭✭✭✭
AU58 at best. Although, the coin can be very nice it is AU. Look at the Buffalo's back hip...it's flat. I don't believe that is a strike issue as most strike problems are with the Buffalo's head and obverse Indian.

    A 21-S is a pretty good date!

That's what I see. That is not striking softness; it really looks seriously flattened out there--AU55/58-type rub. Also some rub high on the bison's foreleg and lower part of the mane there. As Shamika points out, the obverse does not exhibit nearly as much wear, at least not going by the photos. Odd coin. Very nice, but odd.
I do think that if this coin had no wear, it would really be a peach. The strike is very, very good.

rub on the hip looks 55 but I bet the positive attributes for the rest of the coin carries it to 58

It's a beautiful coin, and hammered for the date ... and I agree that it is a 58 (although it could be higher)

BUT ... I would examine the edge closely below the MM

I think something is up with the rim at 12 o'clock on the obv, which should be directly under the MM on the rev

One of the ways MM's were added to these was to drill a hole in the edge and insert a tool that would emboss a MM from the inside out ...

I have seen a few that were VERY deceptive

buff nicks are many times tough to grade properly.
my thinking on submitting coins for grading is, you must be fairly confident
as to what you believe is the true grade first. otherwise it could turn out to
be an expensive lesson in grading. have as many opinions on it you can from
as many sources as you can before laying out the grading money.
any coin shops around you you can visit to have them scope it out?
btw,the coin does look pretty nice in your pics.

2nd set of pics are a big improvement image

I can see the arguements that there may be a little rub, but I have a feeling it could sneak its way into a 63 holder. I've seen worse in 63 for sure!

If this is graded as a 58, it would be one of the best 58s out there I think.
