If you had $10K to buy coins right now, what would you be buying?
I pose this question as a hypothetical, but it may be a reality for me soon as I'm looking at pulling money out of my munnies and putting it into more coins and/or metals. I'm usually a common date, common grade gold kind of guy. I like the Libs and Saints that I can get close to spot. I'm also into silver bullion and moderns (I know, I know....that worthless modern junk).
Anyway, if it were you where would you park the $10K today that you feel would bring a nice return over the next couple of years? Would you swing for the fence and go for one or two rare, high grade coins or go for more quantity than quality right now?
Looking forward to everyone's opinions on this.

Aside from that, I think that Mr.EarlyGold's suggestion to buy some silver dimes and/or quarters - makes pretty good sense at this moment in time.
I'm also trying to "keep some powder dry" for 2009, although the fractional gold Buffalos might prove to be too tempting, depending upon the Mint's premiums vs. gold spot once they are on the market.
I knew it would happen.

Looks like $2200 per four coin set. I'll be getting one, just have to see a nickel sized gold buff.

I knew it would happen.
I would say based on historic returns that going with a proven winner would be a good idea. Quality in my mind far overshadows quantity....and that means PCGS slabbed coins.
What I would suggest would be the 1909 S VDB, in MS64RD. For 10K you *may* be able to buy three, but that would probably get you low end coins that may have some spotting/weak strike issues. However, if you could find TWO full details problem free coins, in OGH's with a CAC sticker on them....that would be under your budget yet give you a solid investment.
10K will get you a very nice 14D also, which is actually a much more scarce coin than the SVDB but dosent have the legend status that will ALWAYS draw collectors to 09.
A 22 Plain strong reverse, with some red still showing, would be a great buy but you probably wont find one.
"Should" make a nice return in the next 24 months....AND.... the ultimate in liquidity should metals spike up and/or if you find that you need the funds....

These are the last coins I need to complete my set.
Of course, if I had $10k in my hand right now, I wouldn't spend it on coins, but instead pay down my debts.

Silver bars, modern gold commem $5 at bullion price, decent circ silver dollars near melt, and gold $10 and $20 for very little premium.

I'd buy what I know. In your case, it seems like it is classic gold for close to melt or modern bullion or modern commems. I'd go with that. You likely already have a decent idea on what these coins go for, and what is a good deal or not.
It is tricky to buy quality if you don't have the experience and expertise to shop for quality. Plenty of full retail dealers have some average coins looking for a home. A novice often ends up with those, not the real stuff. If you are interested in branching out, go slow, and ask questions, listen and learn before spending the big money.
1909-S VDB in 64RD
1914-D in AU
1922 "no D" in XF
1955 DDO in 63RB
1972 DDO in 65RD
I think that would max out the 10K and require a little extra in addition -- this would be more for my own satisfaction rather than price appreciation, but I would expect values on these to increase.
