If you had $10K to buy coins right now, what would you be buying?

I'd spend $5k on gold bullion and the other half on silver bullion.

    But that's just me.

    << <i>If I had 10k I would buy Lincolns....

    1909-S VDB in 64RD
    1914-D in AU
    1922 "no D" in XF
    1955 DDO in 63RB
    1972 DDO in 65RD

I think that would max out the 10K and require a little extra in addition -- this would be more for my own satisfaction rather than price appreciation, but I would expect values on these to increase. >>

I can see the logic in this. However, I would pick two of these - the 09-S VDB and the 55 DDO - and I'd max out the grades in PCGS holders as high as I could go with $10K.

High grade keys in popular series are money makers.

.........5 nice MS-63 Saints and 2 100 oz. Engelhard bars........

"Should" make a nice return in the next 24 months....AND.... the ultimate in liquidity should metals spike up and/or if you find that you need the funds....

If I personally had $10K to throw at coins today I'd shop for a draped bust heraldic eagle half dime in PCGS Fine-15 to VF-35 range, with original surfaces.

    It's yours for $10k. image

I am looking at this differently, I am pondering selling coins for $10k (or more) and putting the money in the market. To each his own.

Let me guess. You checked the box on your 1040, and included an additional $31,100 to pay down your share of the debt that our government has obligated on you behalf.image

Yes, something very much like that one. Though I didn't say I'd spend the whole 10 thou on it. Anything left over would go toward a classic head cent upgrade.

Nice H10c RYK, just $7500 to high imho!

It's obviously not worth $10k, but good luck finding one for $2500.

I would only put a small portion into coins, and I would throw the majority of the windfall into the downtrodden financial sector of the stock market then spend the rest on lower end gold at close to bullion prices.

  • Wow! I really want to thank everyone for the excellent, well thought out replies and opinions. There is certainly a good range of ideas here to consider.

Paying off debt is always a good thing, though fortunately most of my current debt is limited to the big stuff, house, car payments, utilites, etc. I was fortunate to be able to pay down all of my "consumer" debt a few years ago.

I've consider the one posters idea of grabbing a couple 100 ounce silver bars and some mid 60 saints. It's also not a bad idea to go for some high grade Lincoln's, as those will always be popular. The nice thing about high grade coins is that the people who can afford those coins usually find themsevles insulated from the up's and down's of the economy...at least to some degree. So there are always buyers should one need to liquidate.

Do you all feel that high grade Trade Dollars are still a good play, or have those started leveling off? Also, since I do like moderns as well, does anyone have a suggestion for a good short-term modern play? I'm staying away from the whole 07/08 ASE reverse thing due to the possibility of milk spotting. I've got too many ASE's both proof and unc that have that problems, so I just buy those mainly for bullion now if a all.

I may also look into the various bust options out there. Man I have some homework to do. :-)

With a 2 year time horizon, the best play may be putting away 10K in nickels and pre-82 cents, at face. If things continue on the current path, we'll be melting them for big profits in two years. If things reverse, you lose nothing but the opportunity cost.

Here are a few big gold coins I was able to buy at melt +3%. With China's growing wealth, it wont be long before these coins (with ultra tiny mintages) get noticed. Buy them now while you can still get them for close to melt!
