Silver Coins

I have a good number of silver quarters dates 1930s to 1964. I also have a 1996 Silver Walking Liberty dollar.
I was wondering if you suggest me selling them now or holding onto them as silver prices are rising?

If you need the money sell if not I'd hold them for now.

    Welcome aboard.

Silver should be a great long or short term hold. Medium term is a little more speculative.

  • Use a Value Calculator to figure out what they are worth.

If you need the money sell them, if you don't need the money hang on to them.

now as far as the silver... it dosen't spoil and you don't have to feed it so hang on to it... you can always use it for trade to get something you want on the BST forum

If the 1996 coin you speak of is a silver eagle, it is the key to the bullion series, and is worth 3-4 X melt value if uncirculated.

The quarters have a melt value of 12x face, assuming they're circulated common dates. This is using the current $17.14 an ounce.

My local B&M would pay you 7x face, and laugh at you as you walked out the door.

If you knew what you had, he may give you 8 or 9 times face.

Welcome to the CU boards, I would hold, silver seems to be on a run.

image...............Summer months are not the best time to sell the silver. The 96 has numismatic value, so maybe sell that one and buy some silver quarters to complete a set 32-64. Of course, you may have to add some more cash, for the "key" dates and mint. image

Got grades ? That could make a big difference in the value.
  • I would not sell as imo i think silver is going way up in the next 18-24 months.

My advice: don't do ANYTHING to your collection until you hang out a while. You will learn much and likely discover why this was good advice.

  • yes its a 1996 uncirculated silver eagle. I was fortunate enough to buy it in 1996. Anyhow, rest of the quarters are in good to fine circulated condition. Where can I find the current melt silver value?

How much silver are we talkin' about? Enough to make a dent in your lifestyle if it doubles?

    Here are melt values:

    Silver melt values

A few months ago there was a poster who insisted the knew what the price of silver was going to do, up and down. Since he hasn't responded I presume he is on his private island in the with no Internet access.
The Golden Rule: Those with the gold make the rules.
  • Theoretically speaking if everyone says the price of silver is going to go up, we should stockpile thousands and thousands of silver coins... as well as gold... and then unload them when the price goes up.
However, like the stock market, who knows when it is at its peak.

If you're looking to make money then you might want to hold them and see what silver does, maybe pick a low number like $13 to $15.00 ( silver's been fluctuation between $16 to $18 the past few weeks) if it goes below $13 then sell.

The price of silver is rather low compared to gold now, it very well could spike in the next few months as a positive correction, hitting around $30 to $40 and holding pace with gold... but, then again, who really knows.

If you enjoy the coins, then you should just keep them and enjoy them.

Yessir! I've been waiting for this to happen for nearly 3 years now. Still accumulating as I can.
Sooner or later the price has to reflect the physical demand. Doesn't it? image

Need the following OBW rolls to complete my 46-64 Roosevelt roll set:
    1947-P & D; 1948-D; 1949-P & S; 1950-D & S; and 1952-S.
Any help locating any of these OBW rolls would be gratefully appreciated!

Let's say that the price of silver triples in the next year. Your stash just increased to something over $500. You now owe another $80 to $100 in income taxes.

In the meantime, how many gallons of gas have you bought @ $4.00/gal? My point is that if you are using silver as an investment tool or as a speculation, a discussion over buy-sell-hold as a strategy isn't useful to you unless the end result impacts your ability to get along in life.

  • good points everyone image.. im going to hold for now and hopefully stumble upon a few more silver quarters.
I was also wondering if anyone thinks this is a good idea... go into a bank and exchange $100 for say 10 rolls of quarters. Search through them looking for any silver ones. If you don't find any well then you can always trade them back in.

Now, thats a half-baked question...that no one can answer...although, metals are more in a bullish market than a bearish. I wouldnt sell unless i needed to cash.
