It looks to have small borders. My guess is trimmed. Although, it is a small scan-hard to tell.

Besides the centering that card looks too clean to be found on ebay.

I would bet it is in fact a reprint
  • this is the scan of the rear! i hope i did not pay $134 for a reprint..i would be mad cause i was going to buy a 68 pete for $180 and it was an 8

can you get a closer scan of the front similar to the back. the bottom of the rear scan looks suspicious. i hope it turns out for the best.

"I am sorry but I can not guarantee the authenticity of this card"

That line in the auction is somewhat scary, hoping for the best. Looks nice.

i believe the commonly known counterfeit has a black border around the hat of rose. yours doesnt have that. so the card you just bought isnt that counterfeit at least. i dont know if there were other types made. good luck.
  • well i put my bid up to $300 and figured if i got it i got it.. and when i got to read the whole thing. i emailed the guy and asked if it was fake could i return it and he said no. at that time there was like 20 mins left in auction. then i emailed him telling him that the cant guarantee auth. staement kinda scared me, because he sells alot of cards he she have some kinda opion on this one you would think.. oh well i guess i can still send it in. and he will not get feed back untill i get an idea about the card.. don

Use your credit card with paypal and when you get it, scan it as big as you can and post it here. If it's a real one and not trimmed you got a great buy.

Post a scan when you get it, good luck.
  • i used paypal but i have been using my bank acct. to buy all of my cards here lately.. i think i might have screwed myself this time.. don
  • In my opinion, it looks bogus. I think you just wasted $134.01 + shipping.

When a seller states that a card such as a Rose RC "has never been sent in for grading and that he cannot guarantee authenticity" of the card he is really saying, "I am certain this card is a reprint or trimmed, so don't blame me when PSA rejects it." That is a huge red flag and put there so he can claim that he warned you...I hope I'm wrong, but I would not be optimistic if I were you.

Why in the world would you expect to get this very popular card for $134?? So many red flags...
  • hey what can i say fandango.. i buy alot of cards.. and like to share.. well it almost seems that this time i might have got had..
it was a good run.. and besides if i did not post about pete rose people would forget him..we can't have that now can we? don

Dom, I wouldn't worry about being ripped off, though. You can still file a Paypal SNAD dispute if he does not accept a return. Paypal will then instruct you to return the card with DC and they will issue a full refund once they can verify the card has been returned to him.

"What leads you to believe it is "bogus"?"

    /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

I dunno for sure if it's good or not.

    But..........

We have a VERY experienced seller, who "knows about" third-party grading/authentication.

Why does such a seller leave more than half the money on the table, by not "sending it in?"

    EBAY SYIF requires sellers to agree that they "are confident" such items are authentic;

    OR,

    such sellers can use the word "replica/copy" in the title and description;

    AND,

such replica/copy must be marked "replica/copy."

    A mere "I dunno" style-disclaimer is a TOS violation.

MANY sellers are going into "last-period pricing/operating mode." They are
fed-up and/or are about to be run off.

ALL that said, PayPal will refund on the SNAD, if/when PSA says the card is NG,
provided the 45-day clock has not run-out.

While on the subject of possible reproductions, can someone please help me out. I know Topps has issued many reproductions that say as much on the front of the card with a gold inlay, or the back of the card has the current production year. Yet, I've seen other cards that are clearly identified by the seller as a "reprint," but show no printed indicators that the card is a reprint. Are there truly legitimate reprints (as opposed to counterfeits) out there with no markings, and, if so, how does one tell it from an original without disclosure from the seller?

Using this Rose RC as an example, since it has no markings stating reprint, archive, etc., can it still be a legit reprint or simply a fake? Donrus, I'm not suggesting that this card isn't legit. I certainly hope it is. I'm just trying to learn more about reprints and how to spot them.

The lack of quality with the printing(mottly looking focus), and the colors that are completely off. Also, on an authentic card, the "C" on his hat will appear to have an outline, the counterfeits will not have such. In the 1980's there were thousands of counterfeit Pete Rose rookies produced, and this card has all the signs of one of those copies.

The 1963 Rose was one of the first counterfeits out there. I remember them back in the early-mid 80's when the rookie jumped in value.

    The color looks off.
  • At best this card is a severely trimmed original. IMO however, it is a very common reprint. I would have sent you the same card for $5.
  • wow , i wish i knew you had them for five bucks... i guess i could have save a few dollars.. don

All Pete Rose rookie reprints are bogus and the ONLY ones legally sold are marked as such on the versio.

  • i guess there is a guy through ebay or whatever( a seller) that i found through one of the posts here..(he sent me an email saying it was fake) i sent him the info and then i read his page about fake cards..i think everyone is correct..this educated card seller has a $600-$1000 card laying around and he sells psa cards. i sent the seller a email asking where he got the card and why he would not return the card if it was fake, since he stands behind all of his other cards..no answer and no feed back since i already paid for the card. when i get the card im turning it around to the psa for the fastest grading service. well i later till i get this card in the mail.. im really bummed now!! and there probably is now way to get my money back.. don

PayPal will give you a refund.

If the seller was smart, he would give you a refund before he even bothers to ship the thing.

Sellers CANNOT disclaim knowledge of authenticty as a shield for fraud.

    ...................

    EBAY TOS.........

    Authenticity Disclaimers

Sellers may not disclaim knowledge of, or responsibility for, the authenticity or legality of the items offered in their listings. Sellers should take steps to ensure that their items are authentic before listing them on eBay. If a seller cannot verify the authenticity of an item, the seller is not permitted to list it.

Violations of this policy may result in a range of actions, including:

    Listing cancellation

    Limits on account privileges

    Account suspension

Forfeit of eBay fees on cancelled listings

    Loss of PowerSeller status

    Some Examples

The following statements violate eBay's Authenticity Disclaimer Policy:

"I cannot guarantee the authenticity of this item, so please bid accordingly."

    "Vintage Handbag Chanel???"

“Looks like it could be a Louis Vuitton bag”

“I believe this is painted by Degas, but can’t be sure.”

    .....................................................................................................................

NOTE: An argument could be made that sophisticated buyers should not
be bidding on such listings. Just saying....

If the buyer reports such a listing after it closes, the listing can be cancelled
and a PayPal INR can be filed immediately.

If the buyer has a pipe-dream that the card is real, there is no need to rush, though.
PSA can look at the thing in plenty of time to meet the 45-day window.

  • No offense, but you took the bait, donrus. Clearly, common sense should have told you from how he worded the auction that he just wanted to dump the card, and that it was more than likely not genuine.. When a person basically says they cannot stand behind their card, I wonder why that would be?? Never a good sign, no matter how good of a deal it seems to be. If it looks/sounds too good to be true, it almost always is.

But........ if the seller was smart, he should just refund you and not even bother shipping it. In the end, it can and will cause the seller more problems than just giving your money back. I would just email and tell him this up front.

However this whole ordeal turns out, you need to give this Seller negative feedback. It is sellers like him which caused all the changes and blatantly do not follow the rules of Ebay. Scam artists need to be negged and thrown off of eBay.
  • packCollectorpackCollector Posts: 2,786 ✭✭✭
1 more thing to point out, I quick scan of his other items , he never mentions he can not guarantee authenticity. on the 53 mantle , heeven says he WILL guarantee authenticity. that is a bad sign for this card and a bad move by the seller as I just scrolled his feedback and he seems pretty straght up selling mid grade cards.
