**A RARE GLIMPSE OF THE BEST OF THE DR. STEVE DUCKOR BARBER HALVES**!!

saintgurusaintguru Posts: 7,724 ✭✭✭
Recently PCGS requested to photograph a dozen of the best of Dr. Steve Duckor's #1 Registry set of Barber Halves. This single collection is one of the finest sets of any type in the entire Registry.

These coins have only been dispayed once. In a rare break from his great humility Steve has asked that these be shared with collectors. It's my honor to post these for my great friend and mentor. Enjoy these amazing coins!

As a matter of perspective, ALL the coins look like these! These are just some of the rarest of the collection. Steve will not put any coin that is not spectacular in any set he builds. This is the guy who coached me early in my collecting days and has been the single most defining reason that I have been successful with what I've done.

Compare it to a known MS67 and if it's better, grade it 68?

I have to imagine, even a jagged PCGS grader has too look at that one and mutter, under his breath,"Gosh... that's an MS68 all day long, every day of the week, every week of the year") before passing it to the next grader who mumbled something along the same lines as the first...

Wow !!!! I am so thrilled to see these spectacular gems imaged, from one of the all-time greatest sets of any series or type ever. I have long hoped that this AMAZING INCREDIBLE set would be imaged for all to enjoy. The only thing better than these beautiful coins is their owner, who is as nice a gentleman as anyone could hope to meet in this hobby. In the relatively short time that I have known him, Steve Duckor has been more than willing to share his considerable advice and experience, and every occasion has been worthwhile. Through our shared pursuit of Barber coinage, it has been my pleasure to collect alongside Dr. Duckor and another wise and experienced friend, board member TahoeDale.

Hey Saint, thanks for posting these !!!!!!

How can you accurately grade a pop 1 ms68 when there is nothing better to compare it too?

I hate to see a nice show-and-tell session corrupted by grading debates.

That said, I'll answer the question. There are plenty of better, similar and worse quality coins against which this one can be meaningfully compared. They're just not 1905-O half dollars.

    Stunning Coins!

I must say though, that 1905-O has a pretty mushy strike. Do they all come that way for the 05-O?

GoldenEye that's actually a nice strike for a 1905-O. In Barbers generally the O and D issues are more poorly struck than the P and S. The upper right corner of the shield, the eagle's dexter (right-facing) talons, the arrow fletches, certain of the star radials, and some of the laurel wreath details are the usual weak points. The 1905-O has a very credible strike, although not full as you note.

    Jay and Steve,

Thanks to both of you, and PCGS for this great display.

I can assure you that assembling this representative group , and the other 60 plus coins has been an endurance test that even the most avid collector would be daunted by.

How many collectors spend 20 plus years searching for the finest date in a series, and then traveling across the country to bid on the upgrade that will be even more eye-appealing than it's very nice predecessor.

And paying up to the moon when the coin deserves it.

That's how you get into the Hall of Fame. Congratulations, again.

    Magnificent, awesome coins indeed!

I cannot even imagine finer looking business strike barber halves.

These are big coins and it is a miracle they were so well preserved for so long.

    ================================
    Three answers IMHO:

    1) The MS68/69 level implys the coins has all techicals but a striking visual impact one sees
but is hard to really objectively quantify---Sort of like trully great art that strikes you, even displayed next to other master paintings.

    2) The Sevices are often aware of RAW ungraded top MS66++s and numbers of superb raw 67++'s in museums and tightly held private collections (for comparison)

    3) Ultimately, and TDN/or/other classic collectors, have suggested that these superb gem plus coins are being ranked (like in a Condition Cenus)

THEN (very importantly) given a push to an seeming unsurpassable grade TO PROTECT THEM FROM silly efforts at "conservation" for a fast buck--by crackouters

distroying history, provenance, and place in future collectors study/collections. This allows a fair 2 grade difference-- But it doesn't preclude an equal coin

showing up, or even a better one, that can later be added into ranking in the Super-Grade Census.

-----------That's my take anyway, but wouldn't it be fairer to do this for Regular Coin Guys too????
I'm thinking of the glass cealing coins--50 1932D Washies stuck in MS65, those Morgans realy MS62 that can not ever get above AU58------
you know the silly cut-offs to protect prices by setting dishonest cealings--not relative rankings that differentiate fairly.
