Recently PCGS requested to photograph a dozen of the best of Dr. Steve Duckor's #1 Registry set of Barber Halves. This single collection is one of the finest sets of any type in the entire Registry.
These coins have only been dispayed once. In a rare break from his great humility Steve has asked that these be shared with collectors. It's my honor to post these for my great friend and mentor. Enjoy these amazing coins!

I hate to see a nice show-and-tell session corrupted by grading debates.
That said, I'll answer the question. There are plenty of better, similar and worse quality coins against which this one can be meaningfully compared. They're just not 1905-O half dollars.

I must say though, that 1905-O has a pretty mushy strike. Do they all come that way for the 05-O?

Thanks to both of you, and PCGS for this great display.
I can assure you that assembling this representative group , and the other 60 plus coins has been an endurance test that even the most avid collector would be daunted by.
How many collectors spend 20 plus years searching for the finest date in a series, and then traveling across the country to bid on the upgrade that will be even more eye-appealing than it's very nice predecessor.
And paying up to the moon when the coin deserves it.
That's how you get into the Hall of Fame. Congratulations, again.
I cannot even imagine finer looking business strike barber halves.
These are big coins and it is a miracle they were so well preserved for so long.

Three answers IMHO:
1) The MS68/69 level implys the coins has all techicals but a striking visual impact one sees
but is hard to really objectively quantify---Sort of like trully great art that strikes you, even displayed next to other master paintings.
2) The Sevices are often aware of RAW ungraded top MS66++s and numbers of superb raw 67++'s in museums and tightly held private collections (for comparison)
3) Ultimately, and TDN/or/other classic collectors, have suggested that these superb gem plus coins are being ranked (like in a Condition Cenus)
THEN (very importantly) given a push to an seeming unsurpassable grade TO PROTECT THEM FROM silly efforts at "conservation" for a fast buck--by crackouters
distroying history, provenance, and place in future collectors study/collections. This allows a fair 2 grade difference-- But it doesn't preclude an equal coin
showing up, or even a better one, that can later be added into ranking in the Super-Grade Census.
-----------That's my take anyway, but wouldn't it be fairer to do this for Regular Coin Guys too????
I'm thinking of the glass cealing coins--50 1932D Washies stuck in MS65, those Morgans realy MS62 that can not ever get above AU58------
you know the silly cut-offs to protect prices by setting dishonest cealings--not relative rankings that differentiate fairly.
