Gecko,
I understand your point.
First I apologize if my below comment has already been touched on. I got to the above quoted post and decided not to read this entire thread because I have so many issues with this at a fundamental level.
First IMHO there is a big difference between someone posting a coin on the BST that has been graded by NGC as an MS62 and an individual on EBAY who is selling a self graded MS67 that is obviously a whizzed AU-50 on a good day.
Second, this is a self-policing forum if someone is consistently trying to rip people off on this forum the individual would be run off these boards in a flash.
Third, if you really have issues with a coin, bring it up privately to the person in a PM.
Below is a short interaction between me and another forum member regarding one of my coins that I sold on my site, the link was on the BST:
PM: That is one nasty MS67.
My return:
No kidding! Did that coin fall out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down or what??
His Reply:
Just like the coin you questioned this one sold too, to a very happy client I might add. (My price was less than 50% of book)
Fourth, this forum is full of somewhat Numismatically educated people and the picture was very good and clear it wasn't like the guy was trying to hide anything. By calling this guy out on that coin you were at most the "Master of the obvious" in a fairly knowledgeable forum and at worst "someone who cannot grade gold". I don't play in the AU market so I don't where you fall between these two scales.
Fifth, in this forum if you are a little unsure about something you may post a question to the forum and get 20 answers in 30 minutes. That you can never get on EBAY.
Comparing EBAY to the BST forum is kind of like comparing Apples to Toothpaste IMO. (Sorry, I could not resist).
You may not agree with some of the grades the TPGs assign but to call someone out on the forum like that is beyond unprofessional IMO.
What would you like the poster to say: I have a NGC MS62 coin but it is ugly as all hell! Dude, come on!
Gecko, I'm sure you’re a good guy but I believe our thinking is so different it would be best if we did not do business until our perceptions become a little closer. Nothing personal, I am not saying that I am right and you're wrong I think we just have serious differences in our fundamental thinking. This could create a lot more aggravation than any transaction is worth. Again, nothing personal but when we are this far apart on how bullion is sold in different demographics and how a graded coin should be sold on a semi-private forum we need to keep clear of each from a transaction standpoint until we can sit down and have a beer to find common ground.
<< <i>That is fine Mike, did you bother to read that seated dime said he would pay back a pct.if the coin didn't and if it did he would expect more dough? (if the coin did or didn't grade 65 or 66)?

I did read the part about the "deal" regarding the 65 and the 66. I don't think this would have come about if people hadn't made comments regarding the coin and the comments.
I haven't had time to read this entire thread about Gecko and his thoughts. But my general opinion of Gecko is that he is trying to make sure that everybody gets a fair deal, even though it may have been said in an highly adversarial and controversial manner.
Regarding critiquing on the BST, I personally try not to criticize, but I don't see anything wrong as long at it promotes alertness to potential buyers. Regarding the $10 Liberty comments, I have to agree that Gecko was off base. However, regarding the Seated Dime, I don't see anything wrong per se with Gecko's comments.

I skipped reading most of the posts but I have come to the conclusion that Gecko is a relatively new coin collector and knows little about grading gold coins. The newbie or non $10 liberty gold collector would see this coin as being a dog but after you get to know these coins you will realize it's all about the luster and that baggy MS62's are pretty common but would you rather have a cleaned lusterless MS62?

wow...what a long thread! my own opinion regarding a coin placed for sale, whether on a board here or another forum, or whether at a dealers shop or table at a show....i would not comment on the coin unless it were a fraudulent item. the coin, whether slabbed or not. is being offered by a seller at a given price. i alone will ultimately determine whether the coin is worth the price. if it is priced too high and i am interested in it, i will counter-offer with a price at which i would like to have it at. this will not be the price maximum at which i will pay. the seller also has a price in mind that is either fixed and firm, or a price at which it is worth it to him to sell. we either meet on terms and do the transaction, or we don't. another customer wil come along for the dealer, and another coin will come along for me. i can only determine for myself if a coin is worth the price asked. i am all for educating other collectors. and we need to do what we can to educate newbies BEFORE they even consider spending that kind of cash for a given coin. also, unless i am buying a coin from a dealer, i refrain from making negative comments regarding his inventory and prices. there may be a point at which he has a coin i want. he is using his own money for buying coins, so i don't need to dog out his stock. if i don't see anything i am interested in from the dealer, i just quietly move on. well, only my own opinion and i shall now quietly move on......steve

In a recent thread of his, where he claimed he was going to sell his coins and leave the hobby for good (because he felt that PCGS & NGC had just made an admission that they could not detect problem/doctored coins and keep them out of slabs), he stated that he's been in the hobby for about 3 years. After checking his thread regarding David Hall Rare Coins, we can narrow that down to 3 years and 4 months.

Then WHY WHY WHY do members here constantly drag ebay auctions through the mud even if its a coin they have no intention of buying, nor have had in hand? Are you saying that its ok for a member here to misrepresent an item, but not ok for a random person on ebay to do the same?
<< <i> Are you saying that its ok for a member here to misrepresent an item, but not ok for a random person on ebay to do the same? >>
You are ignoring the fact that dozens of people here have said they are focusing specifically on your bashing of Paul's $10 Lib. Where's the misrepresentation there? Where was the excessive hype? I believe some of the people you are arguing with here acknowledged that they felt the other listing in question WAS overhype and agreed with you there.
And going back to what I said before, posting about an eBay auction here doesn't get seen by the majority of the people who are looking at the coin. Posting here in BST right under the item listed is permanently stuck to that coin. It doesn't go unseen to the masses like it would if you post here about an eBay auction, and it doesn't leave the building with the critic like verbal jabs at a coin in a dealer's case.
Sometimes here you've said maybe you were too hard on the Lib (I agree), and quite a few people agree with you on the other coin. Yet you make it sound like everyone is piled up against you, and sometimes your subsequent comments even on that Lib seem to run counter to your earlier comments about being a little too hard on something that wasn't overhyped or misrepresented.

Why can't we "drag ebay auctions through the mud"..?!?!...Why not?? I'm not saying a member mirepresented an item......If a description is used to describe a coin ....What condition would be appropriate to a seller to use in every day language or laymans terms or terms as collectors would understand to sell a coin.?? I have a right to my opinion, as do all of you as well. My opinion on that $10 lib was that it is overgraded, and its the worst 62 gold I had ever seen. Because this AND the bst are PUBLIC forums, I have a right to comment on the item for sale. Many members give their unsolicited opinions in the BST. Have a look. For the most part, those comments are positive, but still UNSOLICITED opinions regardless. So because my opinion was less than flattering, does that make my right to post my opinion less valid because im not praising the coin?

Many of the auctions from eBay that are mentioned here have misleading seller descriptions and hype. Some of the eBay auctions that generate many unsolicited responses here were even being sold by forum members that end up getting bashed here, some quite a bit.
Question is asked, answers are not what is expected and are replied with yet other questions then the twist, the declaration of victory and finally the playing victim role.

Yes, it's bad policy to critique these coins unless you see a major misrepresentaion. I would first PM the seller with your comments and if he gives you attitude then make a comment in the listing.
But first you better know what you are talking about before you publicly slam someone elses coin/s.
As far as ganging up. You bring most of that on yourself by your refusal to acknowledge others opinions. The more you go negative the more people will jump on you. I feel the need to and I'm not part of this group of regulars.

also, unless i am buying a coin from a dealer, i refrain from making negative comments regarding his inventory and prices. there may be a point at which he has a coin i want. he is using his own money for buying coins, so i don't need to dog out his stock. if i don't see anything i am interested in from the dealer, i just quietly move on.
well, only my own opinion and i shall now quietly move on......steve
Sounds like you have class.

I knew a kid with a thing for burning ants with a magnifier. I had to kick his arse in the 5th grade, he was one of those guys you read about. Scary kid man.
Coward? hardly, I'd rather everyone here see how you BS.
Last month during your David Hall diatribe you called me a neo nazi
in public, yet apologized in private.
I still see that you are obsessed with me, others here have called you
everything under the sun including a few that have said you are an idiot yet you continue
to reply only to me.
If you feel you are so much smarter then me why do you insist on
replying only to me? Can't keep up with the others?
Are you afraid to reply to them as well?
Steve
Gecko, above is your post from the BST. You don't really sound like you have much experience collecting.
<< <i>"Gecko, above is your post from the BST. You don't really sound like you have much experience collecting. >>
<< <i>"Here is one example where the picture looks better than the coin in hand. No idea of overton number. I was told when I bought this that rim thingy at 9:00 was a planchet flaw. This was one of my very first numismatic purchases about 3 years ago. No longer have any use for it. $50 delivered, put the other $25 in your gas tank."

Everyone starts somewhere, and 3 years is long enough to know a hyped or overgraded coin when I see one. Perhaps not for you, but we all have different speeds.
<< <i>If any of you think you will find any sense in this thread, you are more likely to find it here.

Nearly 300 posts with no mention of Laura. Not bad!
How many are there here?
1) Laura
2) AT
3) F1rst Str1ke
4) Moderns
5) ANA
6) Seller Descriptions
7) Unsolicited Comments
I'm not sure about the ANA
<< <i>Yesterday I was checking out the BST and a couple of listings caught my eye. A baggy $10 lib, and a weakly struck seated dime. In the listings, I responded with comments about the coins. Is this bad form? There is not a single day that goes by on these boards without some type of "slam" of some ebay listing. So my question is this: Just because a seller is a member here, does that automatically absolve him of any critique on anything that he is selling? In other words, is it fine to hype, and sell less than quality coins on our BST and be totally immune to opinions of said coins? >>
Well I think I've kept quiet a long time and kept my thoughts to myself for a while because it doesn't concern me for I had no interest into acquiring said coin. But alas I belong to this group and I feel I do have a say whether it be right or wrong as they say...It's better to lay your cards on the table.....
If you see a coin on the BST and have no interest in the coin.....WHY..?? WHY??? ..would you comment on it..??...Your not Buying it...!!!
....Is there a Defect in the coin that you know of that WE don't Know of .....OK...you can let us know.....!!!
If you have NO Interest in the coin and have NOT seen the coin IN Hand you should keep your comments to yourself...no one asked for them..!!!This is a closed group and not E-Bay and if a coins are not right between us then We will take care of our own and not E-Bay.....
There ...I said my nickle.......

E-bay has imposed new rules as to what is said on selling of coins.

You were the one that asked the question!
Of course your opinion matters!
So does everyone else's
This I call 'playing the victim' part.
We have now gone full cycle.
Question is asked, answers are not what is expected and are replied with yet other questions
then the twist, the declaration of victory and finally the playing victim role.
You have hit all of them.

Good point. Seateddime's description was both hyped and misleading. Thats the crux of this thread.
How many have you seen? 3?
Steve
earlier the crux was how we critique ebay but not the B/S/T
You even went so far as to ridicule me fr not reading your mind.
The crux of the thread is in your title.
Nothing more or less.
You twist so often, you have no idea what you said anymore.
Steve

And if you *only* commented on that offering, and not also on a separate coin which was neither overhyped nor misleading/misrepresented (much as you don't like the coin), we probably aren't having this discussion and you probably don't get ripped for it.

Once again for the mental midget who cannot grasp the concept of debate/discussion. I ask a question, you give me a quick reaction, we discuss. And to think this guy called me a cement head!
As to the OP ... 1444 posts in 4 months ... take shots at other members BST threads ... whine and grovel for attention ...
I'm not even willing to search through this nonsense
I mean really now ... although the one auction was overhyped, we all saw it, most agree ... still bad form
I didn't see the other one, but it sounds like bad form squared ...
sometimes it's a good thing to understand the acronym STFU
“We are only their care-takers,” he posed, “if we take good care of them, then centuries from now they may still be here … ”

<< <i>I get it now! Its fine to critique auction after auction from ebay, but when it comes to selling DOG coins, or overhyped coins in the BST, shhhhh, dont say a word! Or would you prefer me to simply link the BST dogs for sale to this forum, and discuss them here? >>
Yes, it's bad policy to critique these coins unless you see a major misrepresentaion. I would first PM the seller with your comments and if he gives you attitude then make a comment in the listing.
But first you better know what you are talking about before you publicly slam someone elses coin/s.
As far as ganging up. You bring most of that on yourself by your refusal to acknowledge others opinions. The more you go negative the more people will jump on you. I feel the need to and I'm not part of this group of regulars.
