NOW CONFIRMED SEE EMAIL BELOW

Dear Jon,

Thank you for writing eBay in regard to our policies concerning the sale
of coins.

You are indeed correct that our policies will be changing shortly. On
September 17th our policy page regarding the sale of coins and currency
will be updated to include the following information.

When listing a certified coin, the coin must be certified by one of the
following authorized grading companies:

* Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC)
* Numismatic Conservation Services (NCS)
* Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS)
* Independent Coin Grading (ICG)
* ANACS

In addition, listings for certified coins:

* Must be assigned the appropriate grading attributes in each listing.
Sellers must select the appropriate grading attributes within the Sell
Your Item form, including "Grading Company," "Grade" and "Serial Number"
provided with that grading.

* The listing must include an image of the item, showing the coin in its
graded holder, front and back.

If the coin listed is not certified by one of the above authorized
grading companies, the coin is considered raw/uncertified and is subject
to additional requirements for their sale.

A raw or uncertified coin is defined as any coin not graded by one of
the authorized grading companies. Sellers are permitted to list these
items on eBay under the following conditions:
* A numeric grade is not included in the title of the listing, such as
MS-65, VF-25, etc. A numeric grade may only be included in the
description of the listing.
* The grading company or price guide is not referenced in the title or
description.
* A dollar value (even if personal opinion) is not included in the title
or description.

As of this time the policy is not being enforced and enforcement may not
be immediate as we work to make sure everything is working correctly.

We thank you in advance for your cooperation, and wish you luck with
your future eBay transactions.

Sincerely,
Akira

TO ALL EBAY SELLERS:
THE GENUISES AT EBAY HAVE DECIDED THAT ONLY PCGS, NGC, NCS, ANACS,
AND
ICG CAN BE LISTED AS 'CERTIFIED'. ALL OTHER SERVICES OR RAW COINS
CANNOT BE LISTED AS CERTIFIED OR WITH WITH A NUMERICAL GRADE IN THE
TITLE OF THE AUCTION....
ALSO THE WHOLE SLABBED COIN MUST BE PICTURED. THEY WILL PERMANENTLY
REMOVE ALL OFFENDING AUCTIONS THAT DO NOT COMPLY...
This was sent to me by my ebay rep:
I did just receive some information on what we will be
changing.

The coins will need to be graded by one of these companies if they are

going to be listed as graded or certified coins:

· Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC)
· Numismatic Conservation Services (NCS)
· Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS)
· Independent Coin Grading (ICG)
· ANACS

If the coin is not graded by one of these companies, the coin would
need
to be listed as uncertified. This means you would not be able to list
it
as a certified coin. You can therefore not include a grading in the
title. You could reference the grading in the description.

This would be great news if it's true, but I've received nothing about it from my eBay rep and there's no official notice I can find on eBay's site.

I can not confirm nor deny... it was posted on CCE just a few minutes ago..... my guess is that its probably true!

When will ebay make the official announcement? Until then I'm a bit skeptical.

That was probably the person making the post, and was sarcastic. Probably somebody who sells the slabs that would be effected.

I will believe it when I see it --- a welcome change if true, though. And they have the firepower to squash any lawsuits from the pissant third world and self-slabbers.

It was posted by American Rare Coin Galleries of Tampa. It's one of the Goldsmith's co.'s that retail on Ebay like Gainesville Coins. They're big sellers of NGC. They say it is to be effective 9/17.

  • I haven't gotten the memo from eBay as of yet but my account rep told me that something big was going to happen in the coins category VERY soon. I'm sure this is part of it. I had much coorepsondence with her over the last few months and we reviewed all of the changes that would be beneficial to the coins category and only allowing these services to be called certfied was one of them. Man I'm glad this is happening. It'll have the biggest impact yet on cleaning up the U.S. Coins category on eBay. I wouldn't be surprised if a policy regarding counterfeit coins was implemented next. image

the message in my original post is all from a coin dealer who posted it on CCE which is a dealers network.....since this would be big news I wanted to post his message here....I am trying to get some confirmation from some of my sources over at ebay but its late at night and no one is around.....guess we will know more in the next day!

Are they also going to include "graded"? Otherwise, the crap-slabbers will just switch the word they use.

If this is true, it's very surprising. Junk slabs, and those who sell them, are huge revenue generators for eBay.

Let's hope this is accurate. But, of the 45 auctions I'm currently bidding on or tracking, only 2 are certified coins! (I expected the number to be low, as I'm generally following auctions of Bust and Seated half dimes, dimes, and quarters, and Seated 20c, halves and dollars.)

I hope it's true, seems like they picked the right TPGs but I'm surprised they didn't include SEGS and PCI even though they aren't great they're way above the self slabbers.

This would make it a lot easier for the small honest guy
to compete with other sellers. Maybe they'll clean up the
wild west act and see how much of this market they can
    really capture.

I believe that any indication that it is professionally graded and not a PCGS/NGC/ANACS/ICG/NCS coin, it will be against eBay policy. That was my impression. I'm not 100% sure if "graded" means "professionally graded" but I would think it implies that.

If this is true, it's very surprising. Junk slabs, and those who sell them, are huge revenue generators for eBay.

That is what it was intended to target.

If Jon's information is true, my question is aobut the whole slab being pictured. With size limitations, it can make the coin not be a good enough picture. Therefore, I'd want to have a free slab picture along with the normal one free one.

The way I do it now is to crop the insert and put it over the obverse picture. It ends up reducing the size of the picture a bit, but nowhere near as much if I have to do the whole slab.

Excellent point. Even the casual collector would wonder why they
are winning auctions on crap slabs with few bids.
    They soon lose respect also.
