A Sad Story - Numismatic Item Lost Forever, Stolen: Updated 9/20
Some of you may know about or have seen the half dime bank that another forum member owned and featured in a recent poll contest. It's an extremely interesting piece and the only one of it's kind I've ever seen. As a bonafide half dime nerd it was really something special. I contacted the owner and was lucky enough to secure the item in a friendly transaction. This pleased me incredibly. What an awesome collectible item for a half dime collector to have.
The item has been stolen. An employee at the company I work at, for some reason, took the package out of the U.S. Mail delivery bins over the weekend. The item was delivered to the site on a Saturday and the mail department lets the mail sit until Monday. This employee was under video surveillance and was aware of that. The employee was filmed taking the package, opening the package and pocketing the item. The employee has been confronted and terminated. We told this employee that if they confessed and returned the item we would not press criminal charges. The employee refuses to admit to the crime and will be charged with petty theft and tampering with federal mail which can carry severe penalties.
If anyone sees this half dime bank in their travels please do contact me with it's whereabouts. Thanks.

I hope the mail tampering charge gets prosecuted to fullest extent.
BUT why don't you get a PO box and avoid having things sent to the company where you work? I've never lost anything from my PO box.

I'm sorry. I need to make a correction. The employee was aware of the video surveillance. I put in my original post that they were not...on accident. The person knows the site has cameras. As for motivation while having that knowledge I couldn't say.
I knew it would happen.
I hope you get the bank back and that thief does some serious time behind bars with bubba..

Perhaps "Guido" could pay this ex-employee a visit one dark-dank night! Of course it may then be difficult for him to return it to you with broken knees!
Although I live out here on the right coast...will keep my eyes open......chance are it could surface on ebay one day.
Good luck!

What happened is the risk that is assumed when you have items shipped to your work address. Although in many circumstances it is safer to have packages sent to your work location, it is also likely that more people would have access to your mail and therefore increase the chances of theft.

Was the original item truly intended for half dimes?
<---
I thought that Greenduck was operating in the 20th century. I know that they struck some tokens/medals in conjunction with the 1933 Chicago World's Fair. I can't find any reference to The Continental and Commercial Banks in Chicago before 1920 or so (although this book would give a definitive answer for that).
Were half dimes still circulating in any meaningful quantities after 1900?
I wonder if the original item was actually intended for transit tokens, and wasn't related to half dimes at all...?

From what info I can find the "Continental and Commercial bank" was formed when the "Continental national bank" and the "Commercial national bank" merged in 1910.
