A Sad Story - Numismatic Item Lost Forever, Stolen: Updated 9/20

CladiatorCladiator Posts: 18,345 ✭✭✭✭✭
Some of you may know about or have seen the half dime bank that another forum member owned and featured in a recent poll contest. It's an extremely interesting piece and the only one of it's kind I've ever seen. As a bonafide half dime nerd it was really something special. I contacted the owner and was lucky enough to secure the item in a friendly transaction. This pleased me incredibly. What an awesome collectible item for a half dime collector to have.

The item has been stolen. An employee at the company I work at, for some reason, took the package out of the U.S. Mail delivery bins over the weekend. The item was delivered to the site on a Saturday and the mail department lets the mail sit until Monday. This employee was under video surveillance and was aware of that. The employee was filmed taking the package, opening the package and pocketing the item. The employee has been confronted and terminated. We told this employee that if they confessed and returned the item we would not press criminal charges. The employee refuses to admit to the crime and will be charged with petty theft and tampering with federal mail which can carry severe penalties.

If anyone sees this half dime bank in their travels please do contact me with it's whereabouts. Thanks.

BUT why don't you get a PO box and avoid having things sent to the company where you work? I've never lost anything from my PO box.

Very sad. Probably already in a pawn shop. Please remind us what part of the country you're in so we can keep an eye out.

Assuming that he hawked the bank, and assuming that the buyer recognizes what it is and attempts to resell it through any channel using "half dime" in the description, it is highly likely that one of the very few half dime nerds in this world who even care about such things (myself included) will see it and can aid in its retrieval. Like Cladiator, I also collect such half dime related objects, but as much as I would love to own such a neat item, I would prefer to see it returned to its rightful owner. And I would also like to see the thief drawn and quartered, or some other suitable punishment.

Good job catching the jerk. Don't give up yet. He might give back the bank once he sees that you mean business.

That really does suck. I will confess that I am the original owner (well, not original as when the half dime bank was made) that sold it to Cladiator. That is truly depressing that it has been stolen. I hope that you get it back once he realizes the severity of charges. image

You could sue him in small claims court. That would get his attention.

I'm sorry. I need to make a correction. The employee was aware of the video surveillance. I put in my original post that they were not...on accident. The person knows the site has cameras. As for motivation while having that knowledge I couldn't say.

I hope that the piece of human garbage gets his come-uppance sooner rather than later, but mostly I hope that you can recover the bank.

I could think of something that the thief needs done to him but would not be proper to say it on a forum that kids read..
I hope you get the bank back and that thief does some serious time behind bars with bubba..

Clad...sorry this has happened to you.

Perhaps "Guido" could pay this ex-employee a visit one dark-dank night! Of course it may then be difficult for him to return it to you with broken knees!

Although I live out here on the right coast...will keep my eyes open......chance are it could surface on ebay one day.

    Good luck!

Mail tampering is a felony wihth a minimum jail term, I thought?

Actually I question whether or not mail tampering could be imposed in this case. The company DID receive the item. It was internal where the theft took place. I"m not sure the grasp of the law on mailtheft reaches that far.

Hopefully for Cladiator the situation can come to a positive resolution with the stolen item recovered.

What happened is the risk that is assumed when you have items shipped to your work address. Although in many circumstances it is safer to have packages sent to your work location, it is also likely that more people would have access to your mail and therefore increase the chances of theft.

jabba's pic raises a very interesting question, in a sort of good new/bad news sort of way.

    --->
Was the original item truly intended for half dimes?
    <---

I thought that Greenduck was operating in the 20th century. I know that they struck some tokens/medals in conjunction with the 1933 Chicago World's Fair. I can't find any reference to The Continental and Commercial Banks in Chicago before 1920 or so (although this book would give a definitive answer for that).

Were half dimes still circulating in any meaningful quantities after 1900?

I wonder if the original item was actually intended for transit tokens, and wasn't related to half dimes at all...?

I would guess that you should be able to bargain his charges for the safe return of the item, my guess is that he may try to destroy the item or throw it away and that truly is a shame.... maybe one of us will get lucky and see something similiar down the road for you.... sure all of us feel your pain...best, Jon

From what info I can find the "Continental and Commercial bank" was formed when the "Continental national bank" and the "Commercial national bank" merged in 1910.
