This past ANA provided a fabulous chance to buy some superb gem Barber quarters from the collection of my friend TahoeDale. We looked through the coins together on my birthday, and I picked out some presents for myself. We then closed the deal two days later on Dale's birthday with a profitable reward for Dale's keen eye and long years of collecting. I think we were both very happy with our respective birthdays !!!
Here then are images of some of these beautiful coins, which now reside in the Sunnywood Collection.

Absolutely outstanding!!
I absolutely love the look of all of them, and especially the way the 92-S, 96, 97-S and 09-O look like they may have came from the same original collection.
Certainly the rarity of each is unparralled, and I congratulate you on each (especially the 98-S as I know that one has been elusive for you).
I haven't been by the boards in the better part of two months, but sure glad I stopped in today!

Those are really some neat coins you got there. You must be about complete with the
Barber quarters. What next??? Or do we all just have to wait and see.

Thanks all for the nice comments !! My set is complete now (click the link in my sigline to see it), but that does not mean it is finished !!! There are still some coins I would like to improve upon. As for what comes next, yes, that is under wraps for a while !!!!!

I've never quite seen the 1909-0 in choice or gem unc. in the same class as the mid-range mint marks. It may be underrated somewhat but it was never considered a top date in 80's or early 90's. I think it's scarcity in circ has actually propelled it somewhat in unc grades...somewhat similar to the 1904-s half. The 1904-s half was more available decades ago than mid-year New Orleans coins
(1898 to 1904). I never quite understood its allure in Unc.
I love Sunnywood's 1897-s, 1898-s as underrated dates. The
1898-0, 99-s, 99-0, 00-0, and 01-0 are also on my favorites list. Something about those middle of the set mint marks that get to me.
Completing a gem Barber MS set is something very few get to do.

Those are super examples of some tough date quarters. I haven't seen any examples of those dates that nice!

Great job on filling all the holes. The hunt never ends until the set is complete to your satisfaction. Congratulations on reaching this point. Your set of quarters and Steve Duckor's set of halves are what a tremendous set is all about.
Hopefully we'll meet again some day when I have more time. I'd love to see your whole set in person.
As for the 1909-O, I share TahoeDale's view that the date is somewhat underrated, particularly in gem. I think it's worth looking at some data for the series. According to the current PCGS online pop report, the dates with the lowest pops in gem or better (the sum of pops for 65 and up) are as follows:
1898-S ... 7 pcs (6 in 65, 1 in 67)
1909-O ... 7 pcs (4 in 65, 3 in 66)
1895-O ... 8 pcs (6 in 65, 2 in 67)
1896-O ... 8 pcs (5 in 65, 3 in 66)
1911-D ... 8 pcs (5 in 65, 2 in 66, 1 in 67)
Contrast this to the dates we often consider the keys:
1896-S ... 10 pcs (9 in 65, 1 in 66)
1901-S ... 13 pcs (7 in 65, 3 in 66, 3 in 67)
1913-S ... 28 pcs (14 in 65, 10 in 66, 3 in 67, 1 in 68)
Granted the key dates are more likely to include resubmissions, but you get the picture !! As for the run of O-mints from 1900 to 1905, those with the lowest gem pops at PCGS are the 1901-O with 10, and the 1902-O with 13. Also worthy of mention are the 1892-S, 1893-S and 1898-O with 12.
At NGC, the dates with the lowest pops in gem or better include 1893-S (4), 1905-O (4), 1911-D (5), 1902-O (5). In general I think the better pieces are more likely to be submitted more often to PCGS, so PCGS probably has statistically better data due to the higher likelihood of submission to that service.
Of course this analysis of gem pops does not necessarily apply to pops in other grades, or total pops in all grades.

Knowing the difficulty of the date, your 1909-0 is especially 'mind blowing'. I can't take my eyes off that lovely 97-s (btw, the 98-s ain't half-bad either).
I've probably looked at your registry set 40 or 50 times. Everytime I do, it's like I've never seen it before. Very strange!
