    Excellent thread

My name is Julian, I am 33 and I have been collecting for about two years. I was born in England, went to Uni in Birmingham and worked in London for 6 years before moving to northern California. I am a medical physicist, specializing in radiotherapy of brain tumors.

I started with Liteside after moving over (gotta admit it was state quarters first) then quickly got back to my roots with UK coinage. I recently completed the 20th century UK silver type set album and a set of 2 pound silver proofs and now I can't decide what to move onto. Suggestions are welcomed.

My name is John, I'm 29, and I've been actively collecting early 20th century Polish material for about five years.

Before that, it was liteside material and some scattered Polish and darkside material. I also took the typical decade-long break from coins, coinciding with being in school, etc.

Hi all! I am Nick, from da South Side of Chicago. I am 29 today! I have a two year old daughter named Fiona, and I just started a 2003 collection of coins for her today. I figure its a lot more fun than bonds.

I work in the casino business, and went to H.S. with a football player named McNabb. Yes, I make slightly less money than he does.

I really love my Russian collection which started off as all Imperial minors, but is rapidly creeping into USSR and Rouble territory. I also have a keen interest in all paper money, circulation sets of the US, proof world coins, 1976 coins (birthyear) as well as just about anything that I can afford which strikes my interest. The fact that I am actively filling a Russian collection would amaze those who knew me in my earlier years when I had full blown spendicitis.

I really love the hobby and after about ten years away, I am thrilled to find the internet and the hobby thriving. Hate the fact that lightside is going the places it is right now, but that's okay, because the darkside is just chock full of good stuff.

Once I get my digital camera here (thinking Christmas) I will start posting some pics of coins. My friends who are not collectors hate when I talk coins for hours, so you guys get abused instead! But that is why I love yous guys.

I don't think I ever posted to this thread so here we go....

I am almost as young as Terry (Spinaker) he and Mongoose got me to join this forum, and interested in GB coins, the rest is history. I live in Coastal NC,
and work as a Communications and Network weenie for the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps, I am former Navy Myself.

I gave up collecting US in 2005 and sold that entire collection. I am still plugging away at a GB type set (no gold) from George III to present. I also collect anything
in the British realm as well to include colonies, territories, mandates etc...

I have a thing for Copper and am known to pick up anything that looks good, to me anyway... image

I too have met some great people here many of them face to face at various coins shows and events.

Welcome to the Newbies and thanks to all fer put'n up with me over the past few..... image

Oh one more thing I am also a Rockhound and Lapidary (Collect Gems and Minerals and Cut stones)

Hi darksiders! My name is Brent and I joined up with the forum back in August. I must have missed the thread the last time it surfaced.

I am in my mid 30s and live in Ohio with my wife and 2 kids. I have been collecting coins on and off for 20 years now, although I took some time off for quite a few of those years. My collecting interests are all over the map (literally). I started many years ago in US Lincoln cents and Indian Heads, and trailed off when I went to college. In college I had a chance to study overseas, and developed a love for Spanish and Russian coins. Once I returned, I continued to collect foreign on a shoestring budget for the most part. Marriage and kids pushed the coin collection into remission, until a couple of years ago when I rediscovered my passion for these %*&$# little round metal orbs. I am now accused of being obsessive compulsive about my collection (by my wife of course), but it is all in good fun.....I hope.

Stange enough, my collecting has gone in two directions in the last 2 years. I am a history buff, so I enjoy collecting US modern commem uncirculated dollars. I also have a growing interest in large talers from Austria and Germany in the 1600s and 1700s. I can still get lost just flipping through the hundreds of pages on the German States in the Krause guides.

Thanks to all the forum members for making this an educational and entertaining past few months.

Hi there. My name is Stephen and I'm from Australia. Well, technically, I was born in London, Ontario, Canada, but my parents emigrated back here two weeks after I was born. Lived here in Brisbane ever since. Currently 33 years old (or so they tell me).

Collect world coins. A typical OFEC (one from every country) collector, with "country" as broadly defined as possible to keep things interesting. No date cutoff, either - ancient and mediaeval are just as good as modern.

I'm a member of two local coin clubs, and currently the Secretary and magazine producer of one of them.

Hi everyone. My name is Joe, and I live on Long Island, New York. I'm currently 21 years old and am finishing up my senior year of college, with plans to go onto graduate school next semester. My interest is in papal/Vatican coins and medals. I just started collecting these recently and have a very small collection, though I have had a passing interest in coins since I was young (US coins then, filling in Whitman books of pennies, etc.). I became disenchanted with US coins because the high prices that many command and the boring and stagnant designs on 20th century issues. Papal coins appealed to me not only because of their affordability compared to older US coins, but also because they contain many wonderful and different designs with history stretching back for several centuries.

Great thread. I should have opened it long ago.

I'm clad and am recently retired and on disability for a neurological problem. My interests
have always been very diverse and did not center on work so I had a very physical job.
I spend a lot of time in rehabilitation and taking care of my aging parents, most of the rest
    of it is spent here.

I love all coins, tokens and medals and have more than a few collections. Since '97 I've
been concentrating on liteside moderns but still find time for other interests.

Well my name is Earl, I have been a coin collector since who knows when, dawn of written history or something.
I am very partial to ancient coins, but I also dabble in more modern lightside coins too.
I also have a large World coin collection too, with a nice set of Peruvean Silver Un Sols, etc.

My name is Rick, I'm 32 and I've been collecting on the darkside for a few years now. I currently live in Topeka, KS with my wife and three kids... I'm an accountant... I'm a gemini... I hate closed in, dark places... I have never fought a bear, but I think it would be a lot of fun.

I collect whatever catches my eye, but I am particular to coins from the spanish colonies... truth be told, I am not that picky, and my collection is very much a reflection of me - all over the place with no focus, but a whole lot a sex appeal.

Hi, My name is Frank. I just joined up here with my first post this week. I'm in my 40s, married and a bunch of kids ( I don't want to say how many because you will think I'm a nut case). I've been collecting US coins and currency forever. I've hung onto any world coins that have come my way and now I'm starting to organize them. I probably have 500-600 coins, nothing special. At this point I don't have a real area of interest. Just looking to trade off my dups and get some countries I don't have yet. Its all just for fun.

My name is Marcel. Dutch born, lived in Australia for 20 years and now living in Cork, Ireland. I am a year older then Athealred at 34 years old. I work from home trading the stock market but am NOT a day trader. I only buy and sell when I want to on average about 2 - 4 times a week. My lovely wife and I also have some rental property which I also manage.

I am trying to complete my ZAR coin set apart from the proofs and veldponds ( as they would be way too expensive ). My profile underneath shows what I need....so I am nearly there. I'm new to coin collecting although I have a big tin full of old European coins from holidays that I was on all throughout Europe when I was a boy. I officialy started collecting coins this time last year. as well as ZARs I'm completing a set of Rijksdaalders and have an almost complete set from 1900 to the last year minted. As previously seen on these threads I have a huge passion for Eliasberg Coins also.

My main hobby is also my work which is investing. Other hobbies include reading, fishing, travelling.....and COINS !! image

    Oh, right...

My name is Roman and I'm a 26-year-old collecting different aspects of Darkside, with main focus on Mexican War of Independence and early Mexican Republic.

Born in Siberia, I spent most of my childhood living in Ukraine before moving to Pennsylvania with my family at the age of 16. Not being able to pay tuition, I joined the Army Guard, which allowed me to stay in the University. In 2003, my National Guard unit was activated, re-trained as Military Policemen, and sent to Iraq. Spent a year in Baghdad running convoys through the city for U.S. dignitaries. Once I came back, I was finally allowed to retire, which I did. Opened my tecnnology consulting business in 2005 and currently working as a technology/business analyst in the Banking industry in Toronto.

My name is Chuck. I just joined a few days ago. I have three whole posts already.

I'm 55; just retired and have time on my hands to pursue my favorite hobby.

My icon? I just picked one that said "Virginia," since that is where I live. Actually, I have no idea what it is.

I have complete sets of Mexican Libertads onzas; Kookaburras, and Chinese silver pandas. I also have some foriegn gold (sovereigns mainly), but alas, more silver than gold. [frowny face here]. I like the Peru sols; Panama Balboas and Philippine pesos as well. That is untill I see something else that looks cool, and I will veer off in yet another direction.

I am truly amazed at the knowledge displayed here by the most frequent posters - awed really - so I probably won't post that often.

Since my first post on this thread a few years ago, My collection has dropped by about a thousand pieces or so but I have narrowed down my collecting interests. I collect the German Empire by date and mint, the same for the Weimar and 3rd Reich coinage too. I have sold most of my German states stuff by date and mint and am now only collecting them by type except for the 2, 3, 5 10 and 20 mark coins minted by each State under the Empire. My Empire collection is now over 71% complete, The Weimar 51% and I only need 84 coins of the Third Reich to complete (78% complete) Some of these are junk box coins but I just have not come across them. Do you have any for sale or trade? Let me know...
    Thanks,

    Cool thread!

My name is Doug, and I live in Phoenix, Arizona with my wife and 17 month old daughter, Matia. We are expecting our second child in October, and will do an ultrasound to find out the sex next week. I am 35 years old, and for a career i design integrated electronic security platforms for Fortune 1000 companies.

My coin collecting habits are relegated primarily to darkside material. I am attempting to build an NGC Walking Liberty half dollar "short set" (1941-'47) in MS65 and 66. Aside from that, I really only have one other NGC MS65 Morgan i can't seem to let go due to a beautiful blue toning crescent at the top of Liberty's head.

For darkside material, I am collecting the following:

    - 19th century Swiss 5 franc shooting thalers
    - German states thalers and Marks, primarily Prussian
    - 20th century Swiss 2 francs
    - 1887 Jubilee GB set; still need a PCGS/NGC MS64 Florin and half-crown to wrap it up
    - '72 Canada dollars with pretty toning (my birth year, just kinda' started to accumulate these)
    - 19th century GB crowns with the Jubilee portrait on the obverse; funny, but i prefer this portrait to the later 'veiled head'. something more regal to it, if that makes sense.

    - anything else that catches my eye.

I have really enjoyed all of the forum participants on our darkside forum, and hope to continue to learn a lot more in the coming years of collecting.

    thanks!

<< <i>The real story of Ajaan:

In a hole in the ground there lived an ajaan. Not a tidy, clean, dry hole, filled with fine furnishings, nor a warm cozy hole with soft chairs to sit down on: it was an ajaan hole, and that means filth.

This ajaan was a not very well-to-do ajaan, and his name was Bingo Greentoe. The Greentoes had lived in this hole for time out of mind, and people considered them very un-respectable, not only because they were dirty and poor, but because they had very bad manners. The Greentoes never had any adventures, not because they didn't care to, but because no wizard or dwarf would stop by their shabby ajaan hole. This is the story of how bingo Greentoe almost had an adventure.

One day bingo Greentoe awoke to a knock on his door, which was perfectly round, unpainted and falling off it's hinges. bingo jumped out of bed, which was really only a pile of straw on his muddy floor, and triped over a pile of cheap malt liquor bottles on his way to the door. Cursing and drunk bingo answered the door. To his suprise it was not the police, but a tall wizard dressed in gray. The wizard looked down at the dirty little ajaan and said sternly "bingo Greentoe, you are drunk and half naked, put on your trousers!" bingo stumbled back to his pile of dirty straw cursing as he went and found his trousers. He then returned to the wizard and said "I shall be taking Halfpenny ale at 4 p.m., will you join me?" The disgusted wizard said "I should rather be turned to stone and used as a perch for filthy pigeons, good day Sire Greentoe!" bingo remained very drunk and poor to the end of his days, and those were extraordinarily short. >>

Guess I should enter my post into this as well.

My name is Craig and I'm 21. I currently live in Toledo, OH with my girlfriend Erica. The reason I live in Toledo is for college. I go to the University of Toledo and major in pharmacy/nursing.

    My darkside collecting is:
    - Anything German/Swiss/French
    - Large copper coins
    - Whatever catches my eye
    - Just recently, ancients.

Pretty wide open area but being a poor college student only allows for so much room to collect. I heavily rely on bargain bins....but those are good for hours of entertainment!

Hi Doug, I'm going to have a baby too! We'll know the sex on June 11.
My name is Sam and I live in Blacksburg, Virginia. Right, where the campus tragedy happend, but it's still my beloved place.
I like darkside ancient ones the most. I've been collecting ancient Chinese for 18+ years. After I came to the US, ancient Greeks and Romans really caught my eye. I started to buy some that look appealing with good details + original patina / nice tonings. I'm also trying to introduce ancient Greeks and Romans to collectors in China. There is a big ancient coin community in China, with approximately 500,000 collectors, most of which limited their interest to their lightsides. I enjoy being a darksider.

I'm new to this forum. I want to say hello to everyone. Great to find such a warm and helpful place.

Welcome to Sam, and hello to others new and old.

My name is Bill and I live in suburban Boston, Massachusetts. I'm 45 years old, divorced, with two boys aged 9 and 11. Because they are not yet teenagers I still find children to be wonderful, and admire mine greatly. In college I majored in History and Philosophy, and spent transfer semesters in Quebec City and Edinburgh. After graduating law school, I worked as a practicing attorney for sixteen years. I found being an attorney insufferable (and tried a few different angles), and now work part time as a legal consultant and fill the rest of the hours driving a taxi. The taxi business is the origin of my eBay handle "Hackneybid".

My collection is verrrry unfocused. This has been a blessing and a curse. I collect in one area for a while (e.g. Canadian type, British type, OFEC, Crown-sized, Indian, Netherlands, classical design, hammered, ancient) and then boom, on to the next area. Then just as quickly I'll revisit an old collecting area. I've noticed two changes in my collecting in the last year or so. First, I'm now more drawn to high grades over buying many lower grade coins at the same price. Quality has become more of a concern over novelty. Second, based on my birthyear, I'm constantly searching for coins dated 1961, 1861, 1761, 1661, 1561, etc. This has made the hunt more challenging, in a good way.

I'm now 5 years into my second round as a coin collector. I hit the wall on lightside collecting and stumbled over here looking for ID help on a few obscure (and now cherished) darkside coins in my late grandfather's collection. Without this forum's unique blend of comraderie, information, good humor and love of the hobby, I never would have become an avid darkside collector. Given the subsequent hours and money I have devoted to world coins since then, it is fair to say that this forum has definitely altered my life. (Somewhere, someplace, I hear Askari chuckling.) The people here are wonderful and I thank you all.

My grandfather was in the army, and my family lived over seas for a long time, so I have alot of German coins (my addiction started with the coins my family members gave me). I have A.D.D. so I like almost all old coins. I am really facinated by the countries that either don't exist anymore, or other countries don't rule anymore. I'm Zane, I live in NY. I actually joined this forum for some darkside info. I recently got into coins, and came across my wife's grandfather's coins, mostly german and some french. I'm now trying to decide on turning it into a set of German States Talers. Some nice coins on this side, I got bored, pretty quick with silver eagles. And now that I've been exposed to the German states, I see there's plenty of room here for some great coins on a limited budget.

I am proud to add that I am having a little baby too.

He/she ( don't care as long as it's healthy ) will be with us at the very end of the current year or at the very start of 2008.

Been busy lately with the job ( aren't the stock markets crazy ) and doing the odd jobs that have to be finished before the little one arrives.

Sadly I have been ignoring my hobby somewhat apart from selling a few coins to raise funds to pay for a NEN super coin. image
The meaning of life ? I don't know but I am sure that coins have something to do with it.

Wow, I’ve been on this forum for a little while now but can't believe I missed this thread.

My name is Hus I'm 28 years old I live my wife Lorraine (we were married last year) and our cat Coco. We live in a town called Galashiels not far from Edinburgh in Scotland. We too are expecting our first baby in about 6 week’s time and don't mind if it's a girl or boy as long as he/she is healthy.

My main collecting interests are British, error coins and world gold coins. I haven't been able to buy many coins of late as I have been buying more baby stuff and doing the house up.

After leaving the Royal Navy having served 5 1/2 years, running my own business for a year, I am currently working as a support worker (day services) working with people with learning difficulties.

Some pictures of me, Lorraine, our parents (wedding day, my mums on the left of the photo Lorrains mum on the right) and Coco the cat.

Years later (decades).I got back in to collecting I like both light and darkside coins, I collect early British,German and Papal state coins the most,BUT WHAT EVER CATCHES MY EYE( I have C.C.C.D >COMPULSIVE COIN COLLECTING DISORDER)
