I would have to agree with your assessment - if you're looking for hits- go hobby. If you're looking to amass cards to build and trade for your mini set(s) then go retail.
I have to tell you guys... Ive been thinking about buying a hobby case but now im thinking about cleaning my area up on all the blasters and 24 ct retail boxes. I have been to 3 walmarts and 2 targets within my area over the last week and these stores are loaded with boxes. The target i went to today had atleast 6-8 blasters and 3 24 ct boxes. No one in my area is buying this stuff This is why ive been wondering whats the best way to go.. Yes i too would like to get a big hit... are printing plates in retail? The only thing that hobby has that retail doesnt is the RIP cards..is this correct?
Seems like blasters are better than 24 pack as far as I've experienced. Doran can probably back me up. 1 Retail case, 0 bazookas or no numbers. I have bought about 10 blasters, 3 no numbers, 1 snake, 2 bazooka's
I had two retail cases - 16 boxes - 18 relics( 5 rolen, 2 tejada, 2 chavez, 2 marcus giles, 2 i-rod, 5 scrubs) - 1 no# white (ferris wheel). No ink , no bazookas, no hair.
Paid ~55 per box dlvd. Got the usual flags/blacks/etc.
Like I said, if you just want base / minis, go retail, but you'll miss out on box toppers, ink (most likely), rip cards, and you'll get fewer base cards (but on the plus side, fewer perez sketches).
Blasters on the other hand, are compelling - seems to be *some* better luck (i bought 1 blaster and got 1 snake!)....and 3 blasters (24 packs) = $60+tax. Retail box (24 packs) = $55 dlvd (at best, i don't know what now).

Bought the last 32 loose packs from 3 retail boxes at target today. I knew that was probably a bad omen but I really wanted to check these out after reading this board. The boxes had obviously been searched. How do I know? Because out of 32 packs I only pulled 1 Dick Perez sketch card. Someone was of course looking for the thick cards. Needless to say there were no relic cards but he did leave behind a Adam LaRoche Bazooka back.
mdkoum -- on the upside, he also left you 31 short prints. It's the skinny ones that have the SPs. I know those aren't huge hits, but at anywhere from $2-3/card in value and the value to set builders, you came out okay.
And you got a Laroche Bazooka that's easily worth 20 bux, if not more...
I forgot to mention that I had noticed that part about SP's, so you're right that did work out ok. I also pulled the following mini's: 2 black borders 4 flags 6 A&G's 16 regular 2 regular SP's

I can't tell you how happy that makes me. My sincere hope is that whoever searched those packs pulled nothing but Perez cards or yet another run of Chavez relic cards (with sincere apologies to those who have pulled so many from retail cases).
I've updated my need/have post on pg 37. Thank you all for a great day of trading. I'm down to just needing 13 regular back minis for my mini set, and 4 emperors for what I'm calling the mini master set (regular back minis + flags + emperors + snakes).

All the hype on this stuff the past few days caused me to drop alittle extra at Meier today. I believe I bought retail packs, because they were all over the place and I couldn't find any sealed boxes to buy. I bought everything they had left, about 20 packs. I do like the cards but didn't pull much of anything. It would have been nice to pull an auto or game used card or something besides just the regular cards. I might think about getting a box that has a chance at the rip cards or a guaranteed auto. If there is such a box. Too funny, but I was meaning more of what to buy packs or hobby and retail boxes. I didn't want to waste my time buying $100 boxes if the packs were producing the same cards. I realize the odds are different for several types of products, but want some sort of guarantee of a few good cards.

You see thats the great thing about A&G, the value of your cards came from the minis. Both your snake and no # pull were long odds, but people are looking for those cards which is where you get value from. The no number is more valuable than most of the relics you can pull!

I was thinking the way to go was retail but now im thinking its better spending the extra for hobby. Other than that, not really sure what to look for. No Matsuzaka's either. Are there any regular sized SP's that are worth a damn that I should know about? Was this just a bad box, or is it pretty average? I was very pleased to pull both the mini and regular "Ferris Wheel". It's one of my favorite inanimate objects, but I would've loved to also pull a "Toothbrush" or "Lamp" as well.

I've busted about 60 hobby packs and another 60 retail probably, and I have not pulled one snake.
Judging by eBay, those two cards alone make up the money you spent on all the packs.

I didn't want to waste my time buying $100 boxes if the packs were producing the same cards. I realize the odds are different for several types of products, but want some sort of guarantee of a few good cards.

You see thats the great thing about A&G, the value of your cards came from the minis. Both your snake and no # pull were long odds, but people
are looking for those cards which is where you get value from. The no number is more valuable than most of the relics you can pull!
