Do you think the grades that NGC has for the coins in the examples FDC are really graded or just made up, because those grades are nothing to get excited about. A 65, 64 and 63.
The only thing is you have to open the cardboard evelope to see the coins. If they are not worthy of sending in, you might take a hit on the 'raw' resale market.
<< <i>Only U.S. Mint covers are eligible for certification by NGC. Privately issued covers are not accepted. While not required, NGC recommends that submitters send covers still shrink-wrapped and affixed to cardboard, as mailed by the U.S. Mint’s fulfillment center. Coins in damaged or tampered covers will not be eligible for this service and cannot be designated as First Day of Mintage. >>
-From NGC.
Would you take this to mean that even covers that were taken out of the shrink wrap are still eligible to be graded? I have a first year set of the quarter covers and opened them to look at them, so maybe I can get them graded still if they start doing those too.
<< <i>Rec'd 50 count covers today, but appear to be 50 loose covers in white cardboard mailers stuffed in a outer mailing box..... Not nice and neat packed and numbered box 1/1000. Has anyone else rec'd this qty (50) the same way or in numbered box? >>
Our first 50 came just the same as yours today. No numbered box this time.
First, we shouldn't have to have so many for such a limited edition of covers. They should be just like any other coin for god's sake.
Second, these are verified by the Mint as first day of production, so why should we have to pay extra for a designation? That is part of the coin's identity, literally on the literature that comes with the coin.
Third, you can't be the top tier grader if you forget about coins and collectors and just focus on $$.
I received a shipment today. The mint did a great job with these. Here are some pictures of a set pulled randomly from my shipment. I added some pictures of the inner packaging for those of you who are keeping your sets sealed. The black cardboard insert that holds the coins includes a feature which raises the edge of the coin above the insert so you can view the edge. I tried to capture that feature in a couple of the pictures. The plastic cases for each individual coin can be rotated within the black cardboard insert to align the coins upright. Any tampering with the insert would be readily noticeable.
how do you think these "first day" covers differ from other first day covers from the past?
THOUGHTS????
Hey...New guy here. I don't know about different, but they sure are PURDY!
Does anyone think that in the long term these will hold more value than any other washington P&D dollar release?? I mean giving the limited first day mintage. I actually managed to buy a couple from the mint the first day they went on sale. I'm all for making money...But, I think I'll just hold on to them a while.
(across the street) will designate FIRST DAY OF ISSUE on circulating US Coins that have an official release date. To qualify, coins must be received by (the other side) on the official release date or by overnight mail or air carrier on the day immediately following the official release date. Alternatively, coins still packed in sealed US Mint issue First Day Covers are eligible for this designation. Private issue covers are not accepted.
Some of you are wondering if you will receive your orders, I have some information that may help. I start ordering this sets on april 6 up to april 16 2007 (last day that the system allows to place orders) I am going to include some of the order # and status order #248128xx Shipped on 4-17-2007 order #248788XX In stock and reserve(if your number is below this, is very likely you will receive your sets) order#248794xx Backordered expected 5-2-07 -WILL NEVER GET THIS!!! I order a total of about 600+ and got about 80% so far, I really doubt that we will receive this backorders, they will change the date every day until the "Item is not available" show up in you order. Keith
Been lurking for awhile. Figured I would share. My order placed 4/09/2007 6:00 pm for 2. The order is "In stock and reserved". I didn't think I made the cut off. I'm glad I did.
Just a shout out to all for the great info on this site.
<< <i>Welcome mtndew9! I have 6 orders in for a total of 300 more covers (already received first 100). I'm debating whether or not to cancel some. My last order was on the 10th and it is "in stock" now >>
If you don't want them, then someone else will certainly buy them on the US Mint wait list.
<< <i>Boxes are not numbered.....#1 is the size of box, not numbering scheme. Covers are loosely thrown into regular 12x10x8.5 mailing boxes >>
This is incorrect. The boxes I received each have two boxes of 50 (actually one of 50 and one of 49, since 99 is the maximum you could have in one order). Each of my boxes IS individually numbed. For instance, one box says "439 of 1000."
I heard they were making a French version of Medal of Honor. I wonder how many hotkeys it'll have for "surrender."
Ok, I was about to tell everybody why they received unnumbered boxes, with assistance from 7over8, via private messaging, then like a sniper perched in a bell tower, comes.....Guys -
Boxes are not numbered.....#1 is the size of box, not numbering scheme. Covers are loosely thrown into regular 12x10x8.5 mailing boxes
Forget it now I'm not telling! be back later, after I pull the knife outta my back.....signing off.....
As the tape is under the label, and the packing slip is the box, that means there's no way of telling which box is really number 1. The label was attached after the box was packed.
Casman, it IS the number of the box. When I get my digital camera I'll post a clear pic of "Box 439 of 1000."
The ones that are just tossed in a box are most likely the "left overs"--presumably the Mint shipped full (or mostly full-for instance, boxes with 49 were opened and one was removed). Those of you that are getting them scattered willy-nilly in a box are most likely getting the left overs (the ones that were pulled out of their original box.
My box of 99 was packaged as follows:
One sealed box labelled "Box 439 of 1000" with 50 in it. One OPENED box of 49, labelled "Box 440 of 1000." Instead of counting out 49 sets, a Mint worker simply opened a pre-packaged box of 50 and removed one.
P.S. That "Box 1 of 1000," "Box 2 of 1000," etc. is probably not the order in which the coins were MINTED, but the order in which the boxes were PACKED. Meaning the coins in box 10 could have been the very last ones minted, on well-worn dies. The box number does not necessarily signify coins off fresher dies.

For a market that likes First Strike, even this label must be more of a pedigree

I found the whole press release very hard to follow.
I had to read numerous times and if it weren't for the pics I might not have caught on.

They are really graded. From the NGC announcement:

Not bad on this one either: $32.66
We have a few listed too: George Washington FDCCs
The US Mint did a really good job on these covers.
<< <i>The US Mint did a really good job on these covers. >>
I agree. I like the full cover color design and large portrait. The cover itself becomes interesting, more so than say the SHQ FDCCs.
