Someone (or maybe everyone) explain to me why it's so hard to break even on those first day nickel covers, even the most recent one that was limited to 50,000. That means a limit of 50,000 sets since the fifth and final nickel cover production was significantly lower than the previous four.
Is all this demand for the Washington coin covers driven by grading services willing to slab these with special labels once you rip them out of their original packaging and destroy the original product? Sorry if this is a stupid question. I've read many posts on this thread but not all of them.
I'm asking because I'm sitting on quite a few of those nickel covers (quite a number of complete sets, actually) and they can't be sold for any kind of profit. I just bought nine nickel covers from a coin store local to me, still in shrinkwrap from the mint, for five dollars each. (In fact, one was marked at $10 and I offered them five and they took it.) They originally sold for $19.95.
And, I think those nickels are just as cool as these Washington dollars.

ONLY NGC is doing that, right now.
PCGS is going to lump them in to the First Day label. This alone will create NO incentive to send to PCGS.
The Mint Packaging is superior, although no grade will be received.
Unless PCGS creates a label like NGC is doing, I know where all my Units are being sent for grading and it won't be Newport Beach.
The interest in NGC slabbing FDCCs as FDMs shows how much interest there is in plastic these days.
Although some people will say this destroys the OGP, the reality is probably that more people like collecting coins in plastic slabs than coins in envelopes. After all, many collectors have lots of other plastic slabs, and few envelopes. Not everyone likes having lots of different holder form factors in their collection.
I think NGC doing this is great because they are finally promoting an official US Mint designation.
We should remember that NGC does slab some coins in OGP such as GSA coins and Brown Enveloped Ikes whereas PCGS does not. It would be interesting to see if someone comes up with a slab for the entire envelope.
Jeez, given the fact the second one didn't even give a description of what he was selling beyond the photo which honestly looks like the thing was baking on the dashboard of a 57' Chevy owned by a chain-smoking wench I say he did pretty good! I guess writing descriptions and decent photos might be a good idea afterall...

That could be true but I think it would be silly to submit a FDCC and only get a FDI designation regardless of the TPG. Much better to not submit or get a FDM.

I think NGC realized the presedential coin covers are a 10-year deal and is catering to the grading revenue these will bring them. Unless PCGS changes their policy to adopt the FDM insert, I believe most orders to have the coin covers graded will go to NGC and will diminish the appeal of the FDI label.

I believe the mint will either limit these per customer or increase the mintage in the future. If they limit these it will play a role on how many of these will be able to bulk submitted.

Maybe you should see if Coin Vault or someone like that wants to buy it. Some of those big shops may have the connections to get NGC to put "BOX #1 OF 1000" on the insert and be willing to pay a higher premium before marketing them on television.

I agree it is WAY too early to be selling.
Speaking for myself I do not have a lot of free cash to tie up in any coins so I sell what I need to recover my initial piurchase amount and hold on to the rest.
That is what I did with the silver ASE's I still have 1 set and 4 MS and 4 RP that I have no intention to sell unless I have to.
So I am thinking others may be in the same position as I am and are not all "fast buck artists"
I hope to make some money off of these to finish my 1955 birth year set.
For those saying it is way too early to be selling, I beg to differ. He is one of the few who has his "box", and when the rest of you get your 50,000 coins, these are going to flood the market, and all the spamming "sold out" and "rare" in the world isn't going to convince an eBayer when he's got tens of thousands to choose from. At $60 per cover, that's a 400% markup, and I think he did good. We'll see how many fetch $60 per on delivery day.

I don't know, I'm an Ebay (5). The paypal payment stuff says "buyer" has provided an unconfirmed address. I'll wait to hear from the experts on this one. I thought I said would only ship to paypal confirmed address...

Ship to a uncomfirmed address and you're asking for trouble. Also, there's a Paypal requirement that some sellers don't know about. On any sales of $250 or over you must buy the signature confirmation that can be checked online.

Yes with paypal, he can get his address confirmed with them. Once he has done that you can send him the coins. Just make sure you send it where a signature is required.
