I Quit..

A revelation came upon me the other night, and after a long chat with my better half I have decided that collecting the elusive set of morgans was going to cause massive mayhem within my household.

After many years of collecting some really sweet morgans (and a few crappy ones as well) I have decided to end this obsession- I love my wife more than the damn coin. When I tell you this it does come from the heart.

Over the past 3 years I have lost 3 animals, 3 adult members in my life, almost lost mine- but hey - it comes down to what you have today, and mine sits 5 feet away whenever I'm home.

I have enjoyed meeting some of the folks on these boards, and chatting with a vast majority of you, but I let things get out of hand so to speak, and it truly is not worth the fight anymore.

I'm not going to stop collecting, but I am going to limit the areas of my collection.

Most of you have been really good to me, even though I can be a major anally retentive person at times.

I plan on spending more time with my better half, concentrating on loving her more than a piece of silver or gold, and getting back to what I realy enjoy- FISHING!!!!

I thank you ALL for the fun we have had, as well as the arguing- that can be adventurous as all of the poor Open Forum refugees know(it cost us the place we liked so much).

and yes- come this thursday- I'll be liting it all a 1 time deal on Ebay- so if you see the name in my sig line- understand I do have an eye for my morgans- good and bad..

have at it - who flames me 1st.....

Quit is too strong a word.

Take a nice long break and reserve the right to test the waters again during a different phase of your life yet to come.

    Good luck.

Take your break but don't sell your coins. Just store them in a SDB and forget about them. If you ever decide to get back into coins you'll thank me.

Take a silver dollar and a hammer. Go out to the work bench and hammer the nicest
silver spoon you can. Then go catch a big one with something you made and will
keep in the old takle box forever. Oh, just don't hang it up on the bottom!
    Enjoy!

I must reply, God and family are more important than any material object. Coins are fun, but everything has a balance. Take some time off. Put the coins away. Give your wife an unexpected hug and kiss. Six months from know if you still feel the same, then sell the coins. Dont do anything in haste that you may regret later. Good luck and best wishes.

We can not flame a person who has come to a realization,

of that which is most important to them in their lives. All things

come to pass, except those people and activities that give meaning

and worth to ones life. A true soul mate, is more precious then all the

jewels and coinage in the world. Since time is the one thing ,that grows more

precious ,the less we have of it. I say make the most of time, do what gives you

peace of mind, contentment and share all the precious moments with the ones

that you truly love. I hope you will visit us from time to time, if only to say hello.image

Why would anyone flame you? Family always comes first above all else on this mortal plane.

Unless you really need the money, I'd advise not having a fire sale. Think about it for a while; don't be rash. At the very least, be very discriminate in what you sell.

If you truley love something, set it free.........and it will come back to you. And I am talking about the coins, not the wife.

You can still enjoy, if not in a material manner.....maybe in literary form here on the boards or through various publications.

Good luck to you......hope to get some Morgans from you when you list em.

Good luck. Stop by for a visit sometime.

  • to all of you guys (and gals if you responded) - THANKS for understanding.

I'm a CnR fisherman- if I can't buy it in a store to eat- then leave it where it should be - FREE.

As a few of you have put it so politely- yes my wife comes first- but I have a obsessive compulsive disorder- I go nuts when I'm in a crisis situation= like a death or depression, or an illness- been through all of it- as most of you who know me from here and who have met me know, I have nothing to hide- but I won't tell you everything.

The wife is for the most part- my lfe blood, coins were the obsession and it got out of hand.

Mirabela- if I ever get up in Vermont I would love to go trout fishin with you, of all the fishin(other than LMB's) this is the best form of relaxing.

I am selling the Morgans as one group, for those that have PM'd me- I'll run ya a list of what is going on the block- I will post it before midnight on the BS&T board because doing it here is wrong- and I know this- but I started this to let all of you who could be almost in the same boat that I am in(no pun)- an obsession into anything can wreak havoc on your life- and if you don't stop it fast it could destroy what you have longed for all of your life.

Oh- Hiyo- wannna throw a Frankie at the back of my head!?!?!- make it a 56 in a 66FBL..image

Who else has ever felt this way- post it- cuz I wanna see this go to a hunnert posts. ( I have only done that once before).

oh for those that do know- I'm 50+ and restarting the Morgan series will be a critical mistake if I waited- better to sell what I have (NO I don't need the money) and I can buy 'mom' a nice hot tub to go next to the massive pool in our backyard.. i have a few other ventures that I'm intersted in that will not cause me stress.

This is supposed to be a hobby not an obession and I'm glad you came to this realization before it was too late.

Getting rid of your Morgans is a good first step so you aren't tempted to revert back.

By the way folks- mr. Sego is one helluva nice dealer- between him and Wayne Herndon you could not ask for a better set of what I hope to call as friends. Yeah I sweet talked a few out of Mr. Segoja, but if ya look at my current mint set in 56 and the proof's take a guess as to helped me get to this spot in a short time frame!

I agree with this too. At least keep some.

I`m glad you`re sober of mind now to keep your family your number one priority. I`m old enough to see my family members die off. Last year lost 4 including my Dad. Almost lost another already this year. Those members that are on the younger side of the spectrum, maybe a mixed blessing and maybe not, don`t realize how rattling it can be to lose so many so quickly. You don`t realize the depth you depend on them until they are gone. But, the remaining family members and religous persuasion helps very much in keeping on with life and the memories of the good.

Hope things work out the way you want and come back if the collecting bug bites again.image

I know you have lots of reasons but give them a long rest and then think again.
I quit collecting in 1960 after I got married and had a family to raise.
After 45 years!, I decided to rebuild the 3 collections I sold when things went south for awhile.
Almost broke my heart to see them go.
I'm really enjoying collecting again. The sets I sold had a lot of sentimental value
but the ones I had to buy are 10 times better than the old ones.
Also, there are many exciting new things about numistmatics to learn.
And I feel better about the hobby than I ever did.
    Lots of luck!

It makes sense to me. Most people I know are compulsive about their hobbies to their detriment.

    1) Runners keep thinking they can run longer and faster until their bodies say "no más" and they get overuse injuries and expensive medical bills. This is especially true with runners who discover the sport as mature adults.

    2) Couples get divorced because excessive coin (or other) purchases negatively affects their joint quality of life.

    3) Some people are so in love with their work and are home so seldom that when they actually do go home, the kid calls 911 and the dog bites him / her in the ***.

As you pointed out, you can still collect coins. The key for all of us is balance.
