No collection should run your life, it should enhance it. When it is no longer doing that it is time to let go. People are more important than things. Spend time with your loved ones while you can. Good luck.

Best of luck! The right priorities are the right priorities. I have considered cashing in my chips many times. If it wasn't for wanting to complete a book while I have so many nice Morgans, I probably would have -- not because of any fear of the market but for reasons similar to yours. When I do, I will probably still collect but not PL Morgans by dates, mint marks and die varieties. Something much saner, like a nice type set would be fun. The Peace dollars are going to go though much sooner than later. Just trying to figure out the best way to turn them loose.

Makes sense. When coin collecting is no longer fun, time to shift focus to something you enjoy more, like bass fishing.

Hope 'ya catch (and release) lotsa lunkers!! image

<< <i>Take your break but don't sell your coins. Just store them in a SDB and forget about them. If you ever decide to get back into coins you'll thank me.

    I agree,
If you do not need the money then just put them away.
Priorities are the main thing and it seems you just adjusted yours.

    Good luck;

I also affirm you in your perspective-priority re-adjustment.

Coins, like any hobby or initially innocent diversion, can easily become a more and more self-centered obsession that steals ever-increasing hours, days, weeks, months and even years (not to mention financial resources) from us that we could have otherwise used in developing deeper inter-personal relationships with our loved ones and friends.

As Proverbs says, "He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the Lord." I think making yourself and your time more available to your "good thing" is going to reopen the floodgates of God's blessing and allow refreshing and renewing streams of peace and joy to inundate you and yours once again! image

Just drill holes in all your Morgans and make them into lures! Then you'll have your collection AND your fishing hobby!

    Cheers,

  • I keep telling my wife I quit too.....

Carry a Morgan with ya for good luck and when you're not catching as many fish as you would like, pull out the Morgan and spend a moment with her.....You'll have the best of both worlds.......

Sell the coins - they're just coins. Take your wife on a vacation. Do some living. You can't take them with you. Oh, and have a good time doing it.

Hey Wade, I hear ya on the OCD and know the feeling. Hopefully you bought well and can sell the same way.

  • Again- thanks to all of you guys.

I plan on keeping 4 Morgans, they are not in any registry, nor will they be. They are slabbed by the 'house' and I will keep them for my upcoming grandchildren- yeah I'll be a grandpa here shortly, so 2 will go to each child, all I can say is that when they want to go to college- the education is well paid for - 93-S' and 89 CC's are not falling out of the skies.

Just an FYI- there is a total of 135 Morgans, with the majority being common dates, but a bunch are unattributed Vams, as well as a few attributed.

The money goes to the wife to do what she wants- believe me when I tell ya- this is the best for us.

She hates fishing, but it is much easier to be on the water relaxing than dumping a few grand in coins.

Uh to those who would like them back of bid......not gonna happen, maybe you should consider a slight amount back of ask- maybe I would consider it.

OCD can get you into a lot of problems- at least I was able to come to a realization now instead of later like after a divorce.

I'll be here from time to time though- just to see how many new faces there are- and lately it seems like they are coming out of the woodwork!

    later,

can we get this to 150?

Collecting is about enjoyment. If it ain't fun anymore, then it ain't collecting. I never took up fishing, but I always thought I would like to. It's getting late in tne day for me though.image

There is nothing wrong with reassessing how important collecting is and the money spent vs. other responsibilities in life. Sometimes
it takes the viewpoint of the significant other to point out that perhaps there is an imbalance in your life in that regard.

I dropped a couple of numismatic subscriptions years ago when the wife said "do you really need this many numismatic papers and
magazines?". I think it was around 6 at the time, so I dropped a few to create less clutter around the house. It is easy to go overboard
on a hobby but not really realize it at the time.

Smart man. All you really get to take with you are your memories. (IMO)
I'd rather those memories be with a loved one than a coin...

    Go fish!

morganhunter2, youll be better off with your wife. after 23 years and 4 kids i spent to much spare time after the kids with the coins and my wife told me march 11 that she wants a divorce through a mediator. the sucky part is i still love her and if i had it to do over again i would have thrown all my coins away. the reality is i have to try and move on and im having a real hard time thinking that i still have 3 kids at home an 8 year old boy and a 13 &16 year old girls that i may not see everyday anymore and thats what hurts. beleive me the coins can be fun but your wife is what matters.image

  • Hey Lee- if you get that place on the water I'm coming for a 4 day weekend- that slice o heaven looks like it is filled with CnR's.

As I write this next brief note- my frigging scanner takes a crap on me- the camera had dead batteries, and the spares are at work- how much junk can ya deal with when ya just wanna chill for a day.

I may take all the damn coins to work - do a scan/copy on our big fax/copier/wash dishes printer - and then email it back to myself and see if it comes out ok in black n white.

I can hear it now- 'the pics suck, you need better pics, blah blah blah- fact is I will post all the dates available in raw and the graded ones in the next day. This sucks big time, sorry guys.

I love to fish, and the weather is now gettin set for a nice spring spawn- there are some big lunkin females in the waters here of lovely SoCal- and I will do my best to land another 18+ # momma bucket mouth.

In the meantime for those who are asking I will try to get pics up into my photo bucket and then send it to you- but the file might be huge and the clarity will be rough- bear with me.

A quick note to BEAR- you are a wise one - many should take note.

<< <i>A revelation came upon me the other night, and after a long chat with my better half I have decided that collecting the elusive set of morgans was going to cause massive mayhem within my household.

After many years of collecting some really sweet morgans (and a few crappy ones as well) I have decided to end this obsession- I love my wife more than the damn coin. When I tell you this it does come from the heart.

Over the past 3 years I have lost 3 animals, 3 adult members in my life, almost lost mine- but hey - it comes down to what you have today, and mine sits 5 feet away whenever I'm home.

I have enjoyed meeting some of the folks on these boards, and chatting with a vast majority of you, but I let things get out of hand so to speak, and it truly is not worth the fight anymore.

I'm not going to stop collecting, but I am going to limit the areas of my collection.

Most of you have been really good to me, even though I can be a major anally retentive person at times.

I plan on spending more time with my better half, concentrating on loving her more than a piece of silver or gold, and getting back to what I realy enjoy- FISHING!!!!

I thank you ALL for the fun we have had, as well as the arguing- that can be adventurous as all of the poor Open Forum refugees know(it cost us the place we liked so much).

and yes- come this thursday- I'll be liting it all a 1 time deal on Ebay- so if you see the name in my sig line- understand I do have an eye for my morgans- good and bad..

have at it - who flames me 1st..... >>

Can't put my finger on it but there's a sales pitch in there somewhere! image

There you go! Make her clean the fish and she'll be begging you to go back to coins!

    Wow - What can I say ---?

I hope I dont have to decide between my wife and my hobby.

Ultimately, the one thing we cant make more of is time.

But also hopefully, hobbies like coin collecting also bring us happiness and fill those cold winter nights with something to do besides watching TV.

Good luck, Best Wishes and Happiness -

Good luck and have a great time!

I just got back from a CnR bass fishing trip which was a a lot of fun. I also got to drive a bass boat for the first time which was great - love those bass boats.

This spring I'll go salmon fishing again. Those fish are for eating but I figure it's not much different than buying wild salmon in the supermarkets.
