1st Post...1st Observation...Rude Postings on "Buy & Sell Forum"??

Hi Folks --- This might be my first post... yet I have been following a number of threads on the 'Boards' for some time now. One sort of post has bothered me...on the "Buy & Sell Forum"...
Would it be appropriate to walk up to a table at a show... where a Dealer and Potential Buyer were considering a deal... and interupt them with your opinion of the coin and/or price?
Would it be acceptable to stand up in the middle of a live auction and shout out that the bid is way to high or that the coin is overgraded or...??
I would say "no" to both questions...maybe it's just me...yet that is how I feel.
I have seen a number of posts where folks have made negative comments regarding an offering... IMO these comments should have been sent thru PM.
What comes to mind is something my Grandmother taught me when I was kneehigh... " If you don't have anything nice to say about someone/something then don't say anything".
OK...there you go...my 1st Post...I can't help but wonder if someone will now point out that I have done something wrong...if I have, please let me know...if there is one thing I know about me...it's that I have an open mind and a tough hide...and I always welcome constructive criticism...Peace

Re: Slabbed coins - There are some coins that LIVE within clear plastic and wear their labels with pride... while there are others that HIDE behind scratched plastic and are simply dragged along by a label. Then there are those coins that simply hang out, naked and free

Thanks for posting and welcome to the boards. I try to be nice, but often times I go misunderstood.

I agree with you 95%. The exception will be if I think someone is being scammed or taken advantage of. If the posters don't like it, don't conduct your business on an Internet site open for all to read. Many scammers have been outed through these boards.
Funny that I noticed the same thing as well.
I saw one member go into someone's thread there, and basically tell the other poster that his price was ridiculous.
So I took a look at the member's eBay auctions, and he had a 1972 DDO die#3 'still find them in pocket change more often than a non-DDO 1972' with a buy-it-now price equivalent to the 1972 DDO#1.
It was a $5 coin he was trying to reel some sucker in for like $500 or something stupid.

I agree with your statement.

I agree with you 100%...BUT...when I brought this up I was soundly thrashed and was told that it was necessary to protect buyers.
Smoeone posted to the seller in a BS&T thread that you could buy the same coins cheaper on eBay. When I criticized the poster I was told that it was perfectly okay to warn any potential buyers that they may be overpaying.

I do see your point...yet I might consider a PM exchange with the potential scammer...if the exchange or lack of exchange did not change my mind...well then what...
At a show, (which in it's own way, is an site open to all) I might bring my concern to the organizer...or even security...
Here, I might post my concerns here in this forum...much as I see folks doing regarding ebay...
Added note...I have been scammed in the past...I learned well from these lessons...Peace

An open mind and willingness to learn are traits that are definitely beneficial in life and on the forums.
Regarding the two questions...it is legal to do both what were described, however inappropriate. An auction company has the right to escort you off the auction premises and ban you from future auctions. A show promoter can have you removed from their show if you are disrupting business.
Since this is an internet forum people have the "courage" to make faceless negative comments, comments that they would never dream of making in person. There are numerous forum members here who have completely different personalities in the flesh versus their demeanor online.

Wei --- Thank you for your further insight on this matter. My main concern in this...it is essential for all (well, most anyway) of us who collect coins... that there always be a new influx of collectors...generation to generation, especially. The joy of sharing something we are passionate about...of watching a 'newbie' turn on to the facsination we share. Besides, if "fresh meat" (as some here playfully, I hope, refer to newbies) does not enter the hobby, what are we to do when it is time to retire and perhaps sell our collections. For many reasons, we need to keep alive and nourish our hobby.
In that this is an open forum that anyone may join or simply observe...it is likely that this might be a place where folks new to the hobby can come and learn. Not just how to grade...or properly value a coin...or even how to handle a coin (or holder)...new collectors need to learn how to interact and transact with integrity ( as do some "seasoned" collectors/dealers IMO).
My introduction to COINS was thru my Grandfather...who taught me to respect people as well as this hobby and the history it represents. Over time I have encountered many nice folks thru this hobby as well as some folks who were not so nice.
I wouldn't expect people here to live up to some image of perfection...but as has been pointed out...this IS an open forum...some people post...some just come to observe...
I try to think before I speak...treat others as I wish to be treated...In a forum such as this, I have time to think out what I 'say', so I feel I have no excuse to 'speak' rashly and perhaps 'say' something I might regret...we might meet some day so I would not say somethiing here that I would not say to you "in person"...
OK...I'm off the soap box...Peace

Thank you...glad to be here...
I enjoy meeting people and interacting with them in a friendly & peaceful manner...people seem to be very attached to money...so, what better way to meet them...but thru collecting, buying, selling & trading of money !!!
<< <i>Oh, and BTW, I agree with you. Unless it's a scammer, (and some do show up here), the members not involved in the transaction should just STFU.
Russ, NCNE >>
The coin posse is pretty good at finding these but smoetimes the innocent get injured, too. STFU will never get one in trouble

What you have on the boards are dealers and collectors. Some of us are kind of both, but usually only sell to supply our habit. So you have people with conflicting interests. Those interests, if you are a dealer, can be so opposed as to illicit unwanted behavior. If you are a collector the dealers unwanted behavior is most wanted behavior. I will always look out for the unsuspecting collector, and if someone is trying to scam them then they are going to get called on it. If everyone did this at shows maybe it would stop the scamming. kind of like if everyone carried a gun people would be more respectful, not knowing if you are carrying or not.
If a dealer is scamming someone at a table and I hear it your dang right you should say something and I have and will. If you see me at a table and your trying to pull a fast one, well stop it right there. All I can say is that if the dealers are being honest then there is nothing to worry about. If, however the dealer is scamming I can see how one would be bothered by being called out.
For auctions, people say things all the time, you can here the murmurs and light talk, do they stand up no, but you betcha there are comments at all of them.
My take on this is that the people complaining about others taking the high road are usually the ones cheating.
