<< <i>What you have on the boards are dealers and collectors. Some of us are kind of both, but usually only sell to supply our habit. So you have people with conflicting interests. Those interests, if you are a dealer, can be so opposed as to illicit unwanted behavior. If you are a collector the dealers unwanted behavior is most wanted behavior. I will always look out for the unsuspecting collector, and if someone is trying to scam them then they are going to get called on it. If everyone did this at shows maybe it would stop the scamming. kind of like if everyone carried a gun people would be more respectful, not knowing if you are carrying or not.
If a dealer is scamming someone at a table and I hear it your dang right you should say something and I have and will. If you see me at a table and your trying to pull a fast one, well stop it right there. All I can say is that if the dealers are being honest then there is nothing to worry about. If, however the dealer is scamming I can see how one would be bothered by being called out.
For auctions, people say things all the time, you can here the murmurs and light talk, do they stand up no, but you betcha there are comments at all of them.
My take on this is that the people complaining about others taking the high road are usually the ones cheating. >>
Clackamas --- I can see saying something if I witness an outright scam...such as an obviously counterfeit coin being sold as real...what I am referring to is unasked for opines on grade or asking price...if the deal has nothing to do with me and I am not asked then I think I should stay out of it. Grading is way too subjective and the price one is willing to pay is their perogative and so is the price one asks.
Look...I have gone up to table at a show where they were offering some PCGS coins at TOP DOLLAR. I looked at a few and asked felt many were overgraded (but in the 'right' holder)...I asked for their best price on one and was told that they would give no discount on PCGS coins...so I politely handed back the coin, smiled, said thank you and walked away...I did not tell other folks at the table that the coin was overpriced ot that other coins were overgraded...
Now, if asked for my opinion away from the table, I'd give it (and do) with gusto !!
Now...many of us would only consider a coin at gray sheet...some are willing to pay as much as full retail... depends on the coin and how much we want it. If every coin had to sell for sheet then someone would have to get ripped...how can a dealer sell for sheet unless she/he bought it for under sheet... Should we walk up to the unsuspecting noncollector about to sell "Uncle Joes" collection to some dealer offering 'melt' and tell them their being ripped? Where, if anywhere do we join the line?
If i see a post for a coin for sale and I think they are asking too much...like many coins I have seen on these boards and elsewhere...I have 2 choices... make an offer or move on... I won't post a negative comment that may hurt the persons' chance of making a sale...I wouldn't want it done to me...
Re: Slabbed coins - There are some coins that LIVE within clear plastic and wear their labels with pride... while there are others that HIDE behind scratched plastic and are simply dragged along by a label. Then there are those coins that simply hang out, naked and free
