An authorized PCGS dealer, and a contributor to the Red Book.
This thread (previous version) did get rather "lively" last night.
All in all I think that this board has created a large number of submissions and a large number of platinum memberships to PCGS coffers, so saying that it's not cost effective is probably underestimating the influence.

I kind of agree that since there are YN's here folks need to keep the trash in the can- or in a PM with an individual.
As for criticising the house- well I tend to believe if it was done in a professional manner and not the slamming style we have all seen and DONE- then the house should review it as just that. In the meantime- enjoy learn and always ask questions.
You can dis other stupid posters, dis someone's AT coins, dis NGC, dis modern crap...but you do not take a dump in someone elses yard when you're playing in there.
I suggest a new forum rule: no dissing modern cr*p
I have no real reaction to these "new" rules. I thought these were already the rules? Anyway, I have four fairly large submissions (to me anyway) in right now, I just re-upped my membership because I'm too lazy to go through the non-sense required to become a PCGS "dealer". And I find the boards to be a key
My only complaint about these boards is the member to member bashing that goes on. I have severely curtailed my posting because of this. SM1 thank you for looking after the boards, if you'll accept my 2 cents... When you find more moderators. Please empower them to control member vs. member bashing.

Wow .......I just posted and the thread got nuked...Imagine that...It was about....™....I guess I hit a nerve.......I didn't bash PCGS...I buy their coins.....hell I even submit..So what's the problem........
<< <i>We have had a lot of complaints from our collectors and dealers, both of whom buy and sell PCGS graded coins, about allowing PCGS bashing on our boards. And we also don't like the bashing...especially since it is often anonymous, meanspirited, and just flat out lies. >>
Perhaps PCGS representatives should be more active on this forum and try to better explain why something is done the way it is, instead of letting the "bashing" get so out of hand. Try a little better customer service and that should solve most of the problems this forum generates for PCGS. Be more active on your own forum!
I think a good start in cleaning the board of riffraff would be by bamming those who publicly admitted they had no clue what bashing or profanity meant.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
<< <i>If it wern't for the message board, I wouldn't have joined PCGS either. >>
Same here. I was one of the first to purchase a 2006 Proof Buffalo, my first coin, and knew nothing of grading companys until I started reading this board. I would never have joined PCGS, or even thought of sending in an $800 coin to someone that I did not know, without the knowledge that I aquired from this board. Thanks for keeping the boards open.
Another thought.. When a member is banned from this forum, instead of them just disappearing with a word, maybe an announcement could be made stating who had been banned and why. Such postings would help clarify the rules for other participants and help give them an idea as to what sort of things could get them banned as well.
Did anyone get bammed for their comments? Some members sure were trying hard. I asked if people were trying to get thrown out on purpose last night then all hell broke lose.
I haven't read through the other replies yet since I am at work but I think I am somewhat representative of many of the folks who participate here. I am a collector, not a dealer, though I buy and sell a fair number of coins via EBAY, Heritage and other auction venues. I utilize PCGS and other third party grading services on a regular but not massive basis. I have learned a TON through these boards and the membership is thick with professionals who selflessly share hard earned information in the interest of bettering the hobby.
It is true some people have lost track of the fact that the boards exist here as a service to the community. We don't have any right to this forum it is provided as a convenience and to generate goodwill. Personally, I have no problems with the announced new rules. I just wanted to sound off as one person who hopes PCGS doesn't shut the whole thing down as a way of dealing with a relatively small % of participants who cause a problem for them.
No one has been banned since the original post was mercifully deleted by our wise SM1. I watched it go *poof* last night and because of some comments, I expected to find some current members *poofed* along with it. I checked immediatly to see how many registered users were on last night, and again just a moment ago. Actually there has been 1 new user that has registered since the OP died.
As of the time that I signed off last night, the thread wasn't yet "polluted"... Sorry I missed the fun
I looks forward to a kinder, gentler forum experience. Coin collecting is still the hobby of kings, and should be treated with reverence and utmost diplomacy. Nobody should ever again knock one of my coins just because it has been lightly cleaned - keep your ad hominem attacks to yourselves, thank you very much
Thanks again for making this forum available, David.

Actually, several were banned and some deservedly so since they were clearly asking for it by their actions. When a user is banned, they will still show as part of the membership roster unless the admin uses the delete all traces feature of the software.

Deleted because Russ clarified answer to my question.
This is PCGS' playpen. If they say don't throw ELMO, then don't do it. If they say no baloney sandwiches in the playpen, switch to salami. If they say don't DIS us in our house....then for chrissakes, what's so hard to understand about that?
You can dis other stupid posters, dis someone's AT coins, dis NGC, dis modern crap...but you do not take a dump in someone elses yard when you're playing in there.
A message to David Hall...THIS forum IS valuable. If us idiot-savants didn't have a place to talk about our obsession we probably wouldn't be collecting as much. Try talking to your wife about coins. At best you get "uh-hu...uh-huh"...and at worst the "half-of -everything" abacus is tallying everything as you speak. So to discount the impact these forums have on the hobby, the collectors, dealers, prices paid, activity of buying and selling is an oversight or an underestimation.

I am grateful for these boards and hope they remain open like everybody else. Most everybody anyway. I personally have had many questions answered, practically immediately, because these boards exist. Questions that are not always easy to answer sifting through the rest of the Internet. Also, without finding these boards, it likely would have taken me a lot longer, perhaps years, before I started purchasing coins graded and slabbed by PCGS.
I would like to see the one word replies and emoticon only replies discouraged. They contribute nothing.

Let me just say "I told y'all so!" The boards were sliding into a direction that were making them a serious liability. I guess these rules were a no-brainer if PCGS were to keep these forums open.
Actually the decision to ban a few whiners was brilliant! Whiners have one job in life...whining. Whio needs them. I noticed about 4 or 5 of the banished wasted no time in moving over to the NGC forums to continue their preaching. Right now they are wearing their banishment as a badge of honer. All the sheep over there are welcoming them with open arms. Wait a month, and watch, they will be bashing their new home soon enough. They will bash NGC just like they did PCGS. NGC must be very concerned that their forums will now be polluted with these worthless complainers! Good ridance. I will stay here as long as they do not ban smoking!
This forum should have a permanent FAQ link at the top that clearly spells out the ground rules.
"Men who had never shown any ability to make or increase fortunes for themselves abounded in brilliant plans for creating and increasing wealth for the country at large." Fiat Money Inflation in France, Andrew Dickson White (1912)
Conder101 is gone ??? Oh, fudge. He was one of the smartest guys here with regard to certain aspects of collecting
With regard to the new rules, I hear ya' Otis. And I hear you Mr. Hall. And I'll second the motion that member bashing be added as a bammable offense. And I apologize for the times I have been a problem here.
With regard to PCGS and the Collectors Universe Forums I would like to say this: I have learned more here about my chosen hobby (obsession?) than I have from ALL of the other "places" on the net combined. The reason is quite simple - PCGS has been kind enough to provide us collectors a place to learn, a classroom of sorts, where the "creme de la creme" of the coin collecting world has gravitated over the years, and I am grateful for that. There are many members and regular contributors here who I admire and respect. A couple are gone now, and I will miss them.
As far as the financial impact, positive or negative, of this place, I don't know what to say. I, like several others here have expressed, would not have known which TPGs are worth a hoot, and which aren't. I never would have considered paying a bit extra for a PCGS slabbed coin. Heck, I might never have considered the value in having a knowledgeable and reputable third party authenticate and grade coins that I might wish to purchase. I would certainly have missed the opportunity of meeting so many dedicated collectors, and those who also wished to teach a novice like me all that I have learned. All of this is priceless to me, and I thank PCGS for their consideration. But how does this place affect the bottom line for PCGS? Well, in "goodwill" I would think the quantity is incalculable. Having owned and operated a business for over two decades, I think I know the value of goodwill, and so do you, Mr. Hall. I only ask that you consider the impact of this factor when you think of eliminating these Forums. Eliminating "problem" people ... well, go for it. It is, after all, your "playground" and you most certainly have the right and, dare I say, the obligation to make the rules.
