Toned Peace Dollar...Guess the grade.

Check out this toned Peace Dollar. IGuess the Grade. No cheating. I know its a very common date but I love the tone. I dont do a lot of Peace Dollars so what kind of premium might I expect to get for the tone?

    MS62, maybe 63. I like it but I have no idea of a premium.

    This 1923 Peace Dollar looks like it could go MS63 and you could get a couple of bucks more for the nice toning.

    I'll guess 63, 64 on a good day. I personally don't pay a premium for toning. It is a nice looking coin.

    Looks like some rub on the hair and feathers. AU58 Maybe AU62 because it is a right handsome coin IMO.


    Edited to add: Clearly based upon the others replies the darkness and flatness I'm seeing must not be rub. Coinguy1 is never wrong.image I guess I blew this one.image

    I'll say MS63. There are some rim hits which probably keep it out of a 64. Nice looking coin. I don't see the rub that FatMan mentioned but I know he is a lot smarter than me on these so I'm likely wrong.

    It looks like an MS65 at a minimum to me, and I'd probably guess MS66 before I would MS64.

    Sure, there may be lots of imperfections that don't show in the images, but it's the images upon which we must make our guesses. I see hardly any flaws in the images provided. What am I missing?image

    I had to look up the grade (because for some reason, evaluating a coin from a True-View is exceedingly difficult for me). image

    I do like the coin, though!

    I agree, my coin is hard to grade from the trueview picture. The picture shows the true toning. The picture does not show the hits on the reverse as well as you can see them in hand. PCGS graded it a MS62. I was hoping for a MS64. The obverse shows little or no hits at all. The reverse has several scattered hits. Particularly there is a pretty nice gash in the rays to the right of the eagle. That is what I think kept it from a MS64. What appear to be hits on the rim are actually spots of toning. Thanks for the input.

    Jmj3esq, what is the light/white area on the right side of Liberty's jaw and on her upper neck? An untoned area? A pasty toned area? Light friction? Thanks.

    the toning is very average, not worth the slightest premium.

    The picture looks like an MS65 to me... as for the toning, it's nice, it's original, but it's not wild. The coin's really not worth all that much above the going rate for a white piece.

    I payed about $20 for it. I personally would have paid more. Maybe its just me, but I dont seem to see that many toned Peace Dollars.

    Looks like a decent strike.
    I personally like the tone.

    Would fetch a 50% premium on eBay, I believe.
    May be worth a re-submittal, I think it deserves at least a 63,
    even if it has a few minor marks.

    Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, or in this case the grader(s).
    I'm sure the graders' opinions on toned coins are as diverse as in this thread.

    I saw quite a few of the hits on the reverse, including a few on the rim, which is why I said 62/63...they seemed clear enough in the original picture.

    I don't think the toning is worth any premium at all, but it looks very nice for a 62....

    I'd go with a 64. Some light contact on the reverse keeps this from being a 65-IMO

    I don't think anyone can consistently grade a coin off an image of that size.... or even my preferred size of True View:

    Thanks again everyone for all the input. Some like her, some dont. For about $20 plus grading fees i dont think I went wrong. I think I will hold on to this beauty. Some act like they see nice toned Peace Dollars all the time. That may be true for them, but I have not.

    I'm paying more for that one than one that has been dipped out! I might not pay that much more...

    You bought the coin for $20? Then had it slabbed? So you might have $50-$60 into the coin? Is that about right?

    so again i ask, of what use is "truview"? can't grade by it. can't judge a coin by it. does'nt look like the coin in real life. might as well be a digital drawing, no?
