    Geeez.

open them then if it bothers you that much...no need getting all stressed out over it.

Hell they could sit on my desk for another 15 years and I wouldn't give a damn.

    It's more fun this way.

Sorry, I have bad memories of the 87-89 cards. I had already finished grad school and had a real job. In my spare time, I helped out at a card shop where I was living in KY. I finally had some decent disposable income and what did I do? Bought many vending boxes of 87, unopened sets/boxes of 88 and a case of 89. All the while passing up cheap pre-war and star vintage cards at shows like in Cincy. By 1990, I was out and when I came back in a few years ago, I threw out/gave away tens of thousands of these cards for they had no value except taking up closet space. What little I kept (like the unopened boxes and sets), I barely were able to sell these on eBay a couple of months ago for $1. No, seeing the cards from these sets over the next three weeks will give me no joy. Not when I could have bought mid-grade Allen&Ginters from Lew Lipset for under $100 instead 1988 wax boxes. But I'll play nice but I still will toss those cards. image
  • Like Buc said, I have already given away 5000 count boxes of this stuf to neigherhood kids, lets get to the good stuff. Sorry if I sound elitist or snobish

Buccaneer and RalsonPurina, feel free to do whatever you want. We'll see you in three weeks, or five, or whever you want to come back. Honestly, though, I'm sick of hearing about it. If you didn't want to participate, you should have said so, as we had lots of other board members that would have been more than happy to take your place.

I spent a lot of time and made several trips to the post office to facilitate this becuase I thought this would be fun. Fun for me, fun for the others that participate and fun for board members that follow along. I'm sorry that it hasn't been for some people. It does appear, however, that the group wants to stay on the schedule that I proposed in the first post of the thread. It doesn't do any good to continue to complain about or discuss it. So, feel free to do what you want, but I think the rest of us would rather not hear about your dislike for late 1980's Topps.

Once we get through the first month, we should have some nice stuff comin' our way! I mean, imagine when I pull that PSA 10 condition Clemens rookie from the '85 pack! Or, when I pull that perfectly centered Mattingly '84...OH!...and the Gwynn, Sandberg & Boggs great cards in the '83....then, the Ripken rookie rip for the '82 and then the '81 Ryan, Raines & Fernando cards...and then top it off with a perfectly centered Henderson rookie! image

I want to stay on schedule and am REALLY trying to stay away from that box!

My pack didn't yield too much in the way of interesting players.

    image

Bobby Thigpen: *still* the single season saves leader. 57 in 1990. Who ever would have thought that he'd have the record 16 years later? (I wonder why the "Roger Maris for the Hall" group never got behind Thigpen's candidacy?)

Todd Benzinger: backed up Will Clark on the Giants 103 win team in 1993. The team trusted him to replace Will in 1994. That didn't go so well.

Bobby Bonilla: "Make your move..." and "We just chillin'..." Love that video...

Sorry for getting off track. Part of my frustration is opening a pack of crap and getting crap. I will, and have always agreed to, open with the group. Don't take my dislike for 89 topps for malcontent for the whole project. With that being said, I really doubt that all of us will what to see if a Henderson, Mac, Clemens, Ripken, ETC, PSA 10 is waiting while opening up a (worthless)wax pack of 88 topps.

Like I said, I am a willing, and happy participant, but with qualifiers. Qualifiers that I knew exsisted when I joined up. But I will follow the rulles, and live by them.

The more notable players are here, all 8/9 quality but probably no 10s:

    image

The record breaker is Doug Jones for 15 consecutive saves. The Pirates leaders is just a nice photo with Gwynn getting out on a double-play I assume.

    Others:
    67 Dave Palmer
    69 Jeff Ballard
    198 Danny Heep
    207 Terry Leach
    244 Jim Acker
    266 Luis Aquino
    307 Lance McCullers
    538 Juan Castillo
    707 Steve Jeltz

I miss the excitement of having a player like Vince Coleman on the Cards. Every time he got on first base, the anticipation of a steal really made the game exciting. You could feel it in the crowd the same way you can feel the excitement today when Pujols comes to bat. Even the middle-aged women there with their husbands and who brought along a Cosmo or a Danielle Steel novel manage to concentrate on the game for a few pitches.
  • I don't think anyone said that you cannot go ahead and open all the packs if you want. They are your packs so if you want to burn them that is your perrogotive. That said I already know what is in my 1987 pack since it was partially opened during shipping..
  • Not much to speak of in my '89 Topps pack either.

    19 Greg Gagne
    23 Mike Fitzgerald
    70 Mark McGwire
    76 Terry Blocker
    79 Scott Bankhead
    154 Don Carman
    160 Jeffrey Leonard
    171 Braves Leaders
    241 Brett Butler
    252 Billy Hatcher
    375 Terry Pendleton
    433 Albert Hall
    522 Randy Kramer
    592 John Cangelosi
    756 Scott Medvin

  • i actually like the design of this set. it's basically the 1988 topps set, but the name is in a swirly box. unfortunate that the main set (not the traded) does not have the griffey rookie. here's hoping someone pulls a RJ or a smoltz!

i would scan the cards i got, but i got absolutely nothing to speak of, much more scan of. even the cards were not centered very well!

    here's to next week!
  • i remember as a kid buying bulk boxes of 80's cards and, in the name of don west, actually swimming in these 89 topps cards. It was a blast for me because as a kid, ANY minor star was a good pull (i remember standing in triumph after pulling a nolan ryan or a jose canseco). i didnt start ripping packs till 1991, but i have very fond memories of spending entire weekend afternoons sifting through what are now valueless cards but back then prizes, gold mines and surprises. im still very young, but it's good to travel back in time here and there.

<< <i>I guess I qualify at getting one of the better pulls from the 89 Topps set, since SMR only lists 2. Too bad it's OC.

If you look closely at Sheffield's teeth, you can just make out his two initials, which were inlaid in gold on his front teeth. To this day, Gary Sheffield is the most hated athelete in the city of Milwaukee. He actually admitted booting groundballs on purpose, trying to speed his trade out of town. I recall watching an All-Star game (probably 1992) in which Sheffield was playing third when Paul Molitor came to bat. One of my good friends hoped that Molitor would hit a line-drive so hard it would go all the way through Sheffield's chest.

    Ahh, memories...
  • Sheff has always been one of those arrogant sob's. One of those guys people love to hate. I don't mind him, but I wish the Yankees would trade him asap even though his value is considerable lower than it used to be.

Do I understand correctly? Did you say he "booted" ground balls on purpose to speed up a trade? By doing this, in my opinion is the same as trying to throw a game(s). He should be banned from the game just as Shoeless Joe Jackson. There is no difference between the Black Sox throwing games and Sheffield throwing plays which may have led to different outcomes on games. No Sheffield did not bet or take money from his antics but who is to say that he did not do it for a friend that had money on the game. Can you tell I don't like him?

  • Yep, put my initials on my teeth but did it backward so I could read 'em when I look in the mirror.

I'm not a big Gary Sheffield fan or anything, but I just want to point out that it's possible that he's not the same person he was in 1989 and playing for the Brewers. I'm the same age as Sheffield, and I know I'm not the same person I was when I was... what... 20? Not even close. I'll cut him some slack.

Of course, it's also possible that he's still an ass.

That's absolutely true, LMNOPO. I actually kinda like Sheffield, at least as a player. I was just reminded of his younger days when I saw the scan. The dude can sure swing it though...I love watching him hit.
  • AJw-I definetly agree about his swing. I mean, he's got crazy bat speed.

Anyone else want to start bustin two packs a week instead of one ? If you dont that is fine, Just thought it would make things more interesting. The way it is going now it would be sometime in the middle of September football season when we finish. And I dont know about you guys but I watch a lot of football.
