Name a coin that can be dated without looking at the date

Exclude one-year types (ie. 1913 buffalo nickel, 1808 quarter eagle, etc.)

Here's my contribution:

Quite a few Morgans can be identified that way.

I'm sure there's a number of Bust coins (Copper, Silver, and Gold) that the date can be determined only by looking at the reverse...

1785 Bar Cent... There is no date. The U is under the S which is under the A and there is a die break in one of the bars in the middle if the reverse.

The 1926-D Buffalo nickel can be identified just by looking at the edge of the coin. There was a D mintmark embossed into the edge.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

1864 Bronze IHC, no L. 1851-O Trime. 1912-D and 1912-S Liberty nickel. 1921-D Morgan. 1875-S Twenty Cent piece. 1796 half dollar with 16 stars. 1999-P proof SBA. 1848 CAL $2.50. 1909-O half eagle. 1838-O dime.

Specialists can identify many, many more by knowing certain die cracks, mint mark positions, overmintmarks (i.e. 1900 O/CC Morgan) and all that. I don't know if the intent was to go that far, but...

If you're real anal retentive, many early coins (ie., Draped Bust) have unique die varieties that don't appear on other dates.

Here are two more, these from my collection, both of which are 1884-CC's:

First, the 1884-CC $5. There is a thin die scratch ("speared Liberty", if you will) through RTY, which is unique to the 1884:

    image

The 1884-CC $10 has a series of prominent die scratches through the neck of the portrait, which is characterisitc of the date and a topic of interest and speculation amongst specialists:

Yes ... but ... does it meet OSHA regulations as I believe it is quite a bit larger than a piece of Yap stone money. image

1909 cents with VDB (assuming you don't consider it a separate type).

Just thought of a few more early coppers --

1794 starred reverse cent. 1795 Jefferson Head cent. 1796 LIHERTY cent.

    1800 LIBEKTY half dime.

[Edited to add: All of these have honestly come from memory. I have consulted the Red Book on occasion only to confirm them, not to find them. When I had more desire than money -- still do! -- I had an almost encyclopedic knowledge of the Red Book since I was about 10. Every one has their odd gifts in one place or another.]

    1943 Lincolns
    1976 bicentennial issues
    1907 St. Gaudens
    etc.

are all one-year types. That is, they were intended to look different from the rest. I am looking for examples of coins designed like the others of the type that can be easily picked out of the crowd because of die characteristics.

You got to be joking, some of us are die variety collectors. image

here are probably about 100 to 200 varieties of early date large cents that can be idenified without having to see the date, then there are the half cent, bust halves etc. Forgive me for not listing them.

Type of 1917 Mercury Dime. It must have decent wing detail though.
