How long can you go between coin purchases?

ShamikaShamika Posts: 18,785 ✭✭✭✭

Specifically, how long before you start getting that itch (twitch, tick, jimmy leg, whatever you want to call it)?

As long as it takes to find a coin that meets my needs/standards. No need to buy just to spend money. Most recently went two years between purchases!

The itch seems to be there constantly...
The money part is the problem - it isn't always there image

The time between purchases is usually related to the dollar amount of the previous purchase, and what I am looking for. Anywhere from a few weeks to a few months would be my range.

The itch never subsides. Hell, the other day I was so desperate I bought a Canadian set.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

I can go several months without buying a coin. I'm ok with this because it gives me the time and chance to save money for a coin out of my reach.

Depends on how long it takes to go from one "confirm bid" to another.

My itch is lower than yours on the map, I was so desperate that I bought a Mexican error.

If I havent boughten one for a week, I start getting the itch! Two weeks I'm looking at stuff that I'd normally not buy, just to get something!

I seldom buy coins. I prefer to ask friends, neighbors if hey have any piles of old coins they don't want and let me go through them. Also, like to check out garage sales and yard sales for any old jars, cans or whatever full of coins. Occationally go to banks and get bags of coins and go through them. However, when it comes to a coin I just must have to complete a set I usually go to a coin show and loose my cool and buy.

As the market peaked in early 1980, I didn't buy another coin until August 1982 at the Boston Bay State show. I still remember that coin: an 1875 seated dime, in gem 65...paid $500. Prices had fallen to reasonable levels again by then and I knew it was time to buy again. Unfortunately, I didn't maintain the same methodology in 1990-1995.

Currently, I have been going weeks or even 2 months. If there is nothing worthwhile to buy, I don't buy. There is no itch to scratch.
I'd rather go that way than be kicking my keister a few months later for getting a mercy purchase that I will undoubtedly learn to dislike and then sell for a loss. Buy the right coin once and hang on to it.
Eliminate the pointless churning by avoiding all the mercy and reckless inbetween purchases. If it doesn't impress you on day one, it likely never will.

I am a very patient collector. Going for many months without a purchase doesn't bother me at all.

I've only recently started, so i am buying all the time. But as a collector of "pocket change" my purchases arent all that expensive. which is nice, cause that way I get to buy lots of coins I enjoy. I just bought a P&D set of 2005 Bison Nickels (Business Strikes) in NGS MS66 for $45. I love modern crap.

Realistically, as long as it takes to find the next one that I just "must have"!!! That could be days, weeks, months, well... hopefully not to many monthsimage

I am addicted to seated dimes checking eBay every morning and evening for potential upgrades or new listing for the web-book. Thank goodness the addiction is coins and not something more serious......

I get the itch as soon as the money has transferred from my hand to the seller's hand. That is, I'm ready for the next coin as soon as I buy one. But I can go months between purchases.

I usually like to purchase at least one coin a month. Once a week was easy when I was working on a MS Washington quarter set, but with my current Barber sets, I'm happy with at least one nice coin a month.
