Folks, I'm pulling the plug on this thread. The matter between SG and me remains exactly where it was at the time I first posted on Friday night, so nothing on that front causes this action on my part.
After carefully considering the comments posted to this thread and its spin-off threads, but far more importantly the words of one of this forum's members given to me in confidence, I see that unintended damage has been done as a result of my post. It is not damage of the legal variety, but instead of a more basic fabric. Piecing together the events that gave rise to my post with the hundreds of honest and earnest posts in response, I have come to realize that the most important aspect of the hobby we engage in (and the one I probably felt most keenly missing in my dealings with SG) has taken a severe hit in these exchanges, and for no more reason than a forum existed for it to happen. A forum that I created.
What's the magic aspect, you ask?
TRUST.
Daily, weekly, or monthly, we send each other significant amounts of cash representing significant amounts of labor, and in exchange for these outlays we receive pretty bits of metal in return. We discuss amongst ourselves the various aspects of our prizes, and we share stories of our successes and failures in our hunts for more. In short, we engage in a communal hobby, and we try not to let too many of the world's other distractions draw our attention away from our enjoyment of our pretty bits, at least while we are here.
Enter yours truly. With a chip on my shoulder and a cause to pursue, I waded into this community and opened the floodgates of the world's other distractions. True colors came forth, honest criticism (for which I'm grateful) was presented, and some serious issues were considered and debated. However, camps soon formed, arguments gave way to rants, and the conversation lost any semblance of courtesy and propriety. By last evening, representatives of various well-respected coin dealerships were reduced to name calling, taunts, and other seventh-grade antics, and I've now got at least one lawyer on free retainer manning cannons on my behalf. Because of me, CU, a top-notch firm whose products I endorse completely, had a food fight in its living room. For that I apologize.
Rather than continue this melee, I'm going back to the table. Wondercoin's son can keep his budding commemorative collection intact, EVP can take some antacid, Stiffy can catch his breath, Newmismatist can take solace in the quiet pleasures of the hobby, and I can admit having led with my heart when my head should have known better. A doctor and his close friend, a lawyer, were eating lunch one day when the doctor complained. "You know, I am having a hard time billing patients. Some come in for a visit, have no insurance, and I get paid MAYBE 120 days after their visit, or they have no money and I end up getting nothing. How do YOU guys do it?"
The lawyer freind answers, "Well, usually we ask for money up front for starters before we do ANYTHING, called contingency, and we bill clients for OUR time - every MINUTE - even if I was eating dinner while working on their case."
The doctor responds, "WOW, what a great idea, I should start doing that with MY patients!!! Thanks, law man!"
Well, I was off suing somebody (or is it smoebody) for one of my clients, so I've missed a little bit of the fireworks - was there any name calling? Have Laura and JB formed a true bond of friendship here? Have I missed anything?
Well, I must admit I've heard a few new lawyer jokes and and I'm going out to lunch with a Judge tomorrow and he ALWAYS appreciates lawyer jokes, so I'm well armed.
Let me commend Beeby - I think he's taken the correct approach in this matter - it's a coin, $hit happens, people make mistakes and there's more important things to spend our leisure time on - back to enjoying coins!

i know that this was hard for you to miss out on a coin that was worth more than what you won the auction for, and yes i know it sucks that they were honest and took steps to protect their assets. but noone got hurt, ( nothign more than your ego and their credibility. ). this is something that the company needs to seriously look at and adress ASAP. sorry that it took this for them to open their eyes and see the problem. but hey you didnt loose money, and pretty much you just bit the hand that feeds you. you dont know how they work and think. ever think that its possible down the road since they put you in the computer that maybe if they saw that you took this well that maybe if you saw a coin forsale they might have been able to cut the price a little more . you were mad you voiced your opinion and it was heard. they tried to bandaid the problem and help smooth things over; you didnt want that, and im sure in the future if you ever chose to go back to them and if they have you in the computer im sure they would not be likely to help you out on prices.
for as you going to court over this. its like peeing up a flagpole i cant see how you are gonna win. if it was a delibate act where they were trying to ignore you and not refund your money then yes you can win maybe, but i honestly dont see this staying in court more than a few minutes before it gets dismissed.
im not saying your wrong , you have a valid point and you are disappointed and yes they should have gotten you a replacement coin. but they didnt and thats wrong but if you said down the road is there a way i can get a % off on another coin that i might be interested in im sure theres a good shot they would have said yes , and lets say it was more expensive the discount might have off set the 100 or so that you were unpaying for the coin you lost. like the others said, alot of different ways you could go , no one way is right or wrong, but this would have been my way, and i think this might have gotten a wee bit out of hand and now could be just bitter.

Three surgeons were drinking coffee together (decaffinated I'm sure) and talking about what kind of patients they like to operate on. The first says "I like to operate on architects--they come with a set of blueprints, and it's really easy to find everything". The second one shrugs and says "Well, I like operating on artists--they come labeled like a paint-by-the-numbers, so it's really easy to put everything where it belongs". The third surgeon says he likes to operate on lawyers. The other two howl in disbelief and demand to know why. His response is that "Lawyers are easy, they have a mouth and an anus* and nothing else in between to worry about or get in the way".
