mgoodm3mgoodm3 Posts: 17,497 ✭✭✭
I've been here 2 years today and also cross 10k posts today. For this glorious occasion I will be giving away four coins, all good dates, but in worn condition. Give everyone out there some sort of advice, tip, factoid, picture whatever and you will be entered. One of the coins will go to a YN, so let me know who you are. I'll run this through the weekend and conclude things around noon Monday.

Here's what you could be winning:

WINNERS: Taytay (for son), eyoung429, joefro, coinjp

    Very generous giveaway!

The primary advice that I give every collector is to learn the history behind every coin in their collection and learn to appreciate it as much as you you do the aesthetics of the coin itself.

Nice giveaway and congratulations on the 10K.
My only advice is to make coin collecting fun. Collect what you can afford and don't let anyone persuede you to do otherwise. If you like it, do it

Cool give away. Thanks for the chance.

1866 was the first year the motto "In God We Trust" was placed on the reverse of all coins for production. Although the 1866 S half dollar has two varieties. With motto common. And a no motto issue which is scarce, in any grade.

When buying a coin, look at the edges...the lip of the rim, the fields just inside of the rim, the flat surfaces of the rim, and the uniformity of the rim. This little examination will tell you a lot about the coin before you get to the fields, mottos, and devices. Oh yes, please enter myself in your outstanding give-a-way.

As you advance as a collector, look towards some of the underappreciated series that few non-collectors know about. "Values" galore abound in these series, such as the 2-cent and 3-cent (both) series. You can get you hands on some old time coins from around the Civil War and on that are really cool and not too bad for most coin budgets. Both business strikes and proofs of these series can be very nice additions to anyone's collection and at relatively reasonable prices.

Only buy coins that you are totally happy with. If you buy it just to fill a slot and don't really like it, every time you look at it you will groan.

Please throw my name in the hat, and congrats!

Factoid: PVC is not actually the problem with PVC flips, it's the plasticizer (which makes the PVC soft) di-2-ethylhexyl-phthalate (DEHP).

    Great givaway!
Advice: Before you buy that coin, consider whether you might wait a little longer, save a little more money, and then buy the next higher grade. If it looks too good to be true, keep your money and walk away.

Read.....obtain a similar coin to get a feel of what you are looking for then .....

Research....can I get a better coin at a lesser price from an unknown individual rather than pay 5% more from a person/dealer with a reputation?

Relish.....you will enjoy your coins better if you use patience to find the coin that "hits the spot" rather than suffering a coin that you will want to replace for the same cost.

Please enter me in this fabulous givaway and CONGRATS!!! On your 10K!!!!!

Don't collect coins if you think you'll make big bucks doing it. YOU WON'T.

Okay, maybe you will. But consider yourself very lucky if you do.

If you don't absolutely LOVE a coin the first time you lay eyes on it, DON'T BUY IT.

My advice is always ask the seller if they have a return policy (especially if it was sight unseen) and don't be afraid to go through the hassle of returning it.

thanks for the chance and I'm a YN.

First of all, congrats on 10,000 posts and your 2 year anniversary here!!!

    My advice:
When you're searching for your next coin, remember patience is a virtue. Take your time and look at many coins of a particular date before buying it. You will enjoy the coin much longer.

For us YN's. I suggest to save up money for that coin that may be out of reach. Even if you have to wait several months to get it.

My advice is to not buy bttom tier TPG slabs unless you know what you are doing and see them in person. Those coins typically are in those slabs because they wouldn't cut it in a real slab.

Wow great giveaway and congrats on 10,000 posts!!! Here is the best advice that I have received since joining these forums and would still be going down the wrong path if I hadn't been corrected:

It is much much more fulfilling to save up and buy a couple of really great coins every year that take a few months to save up for. This is much better that buying a cheap widget everytime you see one selling for a "good deal" on eBay. You'll quickly end up with 100 crap coins that are all easily replaced.

BUY KEYS AND SEMI-KEYS, NOT WIDGETS! image

    Thanks again for the chance!

    My tip would be:
Look at your coins in natural (sun) light. You don't want to be negatively surprised if the lighting hides something that you see in natural light later and you want to make sure to buy the right coin the first time.
Poor lighting can hide hairlines, spots, ugly toning, small dings, etc.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
