1. Set the white balance on your camera correctly to help avoid color casts in taking pictures of coins 2. If you are photographing a coin in a white slab either set your stop one higher than your meter reading or use a center point exposure balance 3. If your internet provider allows you to have multiple email accounts, create one just for sales/internet usage. That way if you get spammed you can delete it and your family won't be impacted 4. If you rinse in acetone to clean off junk, be sure to rinse in a clean batch and let air dry. 5. If you see zig-zagging lines on a coin that seem to rotate when the coin is rotated it is likely cleaning (unless you see the lines running crisply under devices and out the other side -- then it is die polish) 6. Photos tend to add a little and omit a lot when it comes to grades 7. Don't let other people's preferences, prejudices, and budgets affect what you enjoy in your personal pursuit of a collection
Don't rush into buying a coin just to fill in a hole in your book. Wait until you find "The Coin" that talks to you. Remember that the search is more fun than the actual find.

Congratulations! and great giveaway! My advice--Be choosy and take your time in building your collection. Don't pass on a coin you really want just because it's a little over your budget.
1. If you think there is something special with the coin put it aside. 2. The Web is your friend but books are for facts. 3. There were 2,148,738,000 pennies made for 1944, I'm sorry your scratchy/worn-circulated one cent isn't going to make you rich.
Congrat's "m" on on two years and 10,000+ post's! Time Fly's doesn't it I just went over a year here on the 14th, giveaway soon Thanks for the fantastic pic's too. My words of wisdom are these:
"Have Fun" collecting what you like.
Do your homework and learn patience.

Don't be afraid to ask questions here, before, you buy a coin.
Accept postive and negative comments as warranted and learn from it. Don't take things personally.

Congrats on 10k and 2 years. And thanks for all the great coin images and photo tips!!
My advice: Never, ever, ever, use "soft" flips, not even on a temporary basis!! Depite the well publicized dangers of using these things, they are still being sold, and I still occaisionaly receive a purchased coin in one of the dreaded things!!
Also, if you ever purchase a coin in a soft flip, soak it in acetone as soon as you can to remove PVC residue and stabilize the surfaces.
please enter me I am a YN and I am a morgan dollar collector ! My tip for people is bid on coins with less then a 60 seconds to go so no one will have time to outbid you!

My numismatic thought, is that it is important to never loose site of your own unique collecting passion, for it is timeless. Collecting according to bull & bear markets, the fluctuating standards of TPGs, pop reports, or the hot or coldness of each particular series are not recipes for long-term gratification.
My advice is to collect what you like and are comfortable with , also don't be pressured by others !
Looking for Atlanta $1-$20 Series 1928-present + Stars , Raw or Graded !! & FR-1509 ,FR-1509*,FR-1510,FR-1510*,FR-1511*,FR-1512*,FR-1514* in PCGS 66 or 67PPQ**
Congrats on 10000 (at my pace that won't happen for me for another 20 years or so).
My tip: As has been said countless times and in many ways, buy the book before the coin. I love to read about coins and currency. I'm not sure if I collect coins or if I collect books about coins.
Collect what you want and enjoy what you collect, don't worry about what the other guy can afford to collect, cause there's always someone out there that can collect a better widget. it ain't about the money.
Oh, Oh..........wait a minute, datz advise I need to follow...
thanx for the chance,
Herb
Remember it's not how you pick your nose that matters, it's where you put the boogers.
My adivce: don't try to buy everything all at once. Relax. Take a deep breath. Specialize and have a plan of action. Remember, it's supposed to be fun (borrowing from iMac)
Floss daily and try to specialize in a series or two. Please enter my soon-to-be four year old in your giveaway. Congrats on the milestones, and keep the great pics coming
"What are you putting that tape on your nose for?" "Exactly."
A glass jar with a tight sealing lid with some silica gel inside it is an excellent inexpensive container that will protect coins from corrosion as long as they are in inert holders when placed in the jar.
Thanks for the chance. My advice is to give a youngster an "odd" coin. Tell them to do research it. That way, they usually appreciate it and possibly we might be learning from themin a few years here on the boards. Give them a "golden" dollar or Kennedy half and they might ask, "is that real money?" Ray
You only live life once, enjoy it like it's your last day. It just MIGHT be!
My advice is to read a lot about the coins that you want to collect. Learn how to grade! Go to a lot of show, and look at as many slabbed coins as possible. Get a feel about luster, eye appeal, strike, surfaces, etc. Then take your time. Be patient, and be picky. When you buy a coin, think about what you would have to go through when you get ready to sell it. Think about the future prospective buyers. How will they see the coin? A bargain is usually never a bargain. Never talk yourself into a coin. Feel good about the purchase. And have fun!
Today's mighty oak is just yesterday's nut that held its ground.
As a fairly new collector, I have received lots of good advice and tips from this board. Among the most important is to take time and don't rush your collection ie buy the coin not the holder. Don't be afraid to ask for advice if you think it is really dumb use the pm...lol (I have). And go for quality not quantity...
When I started I tried to specialize in one coin type ie morgans, over the past few months I have tried to venture out a bit and bought some really nice stuff, thanks to Tom Bush, and gregthegreat. doing this has kept my interest especially since many of the morgans I want are out of my price range....
tnx for the giveaway and supporting the YN's
There is nothing more powerful than the power of goodbye
My advice is to know your series before you pour a lot of money into a coin. Just because you know your Morgans does not a commemorative collector make. . . Thanks for the chance!
I've had great transactions with people like: drwstr123, CCC2010, AlanLastufka, Type2, Justlooking, zas107, StrikeOutXXX, 10point, 66Tbird, and many more!
Perhaps the rarest Jeffs are two special presentation pieces presented to designer Felix Schlag when his initials finally were added to the obverse in 1966 ... it was doubtful they were proofs, but likely may have been struck, more than once, on special planchets from new dies ... I win, a YN gets it!

Do the research, then when see a coin you want (and you know you want it) buy it. Worry about price later, money can always be made.
Don't let the "right" coin pass you by, you will be kicking yourself later.
Congrats mgoodm3!

My advice to new collectors has always been:
Collect WHAT you enjoy, collect HOW you enjoy, and opinions be damned. And, buy the book before you buy the coin.
Cheers,
Bob
Thanks for the chance.
My advice is:
When searching on ebay, click the completed transaction button to see what the coin has been selling for in the last 30 days.
