    Borderline uncirculated, BUT either retoned after a cleaning or AT'd.

    Bottom line - I do not believe that to be natural color for such a coin and as a result, am operating under the presumption that the "quality" is less than it might otherwise appear to be.

    HIgh end AU details but AT. I agree with Mark. Look closely under the toning to see if there are any problems.

    Have to agree ... AT and unatural, probably hiding problems ... but it might get worse yet ... based on the picture I'm not sure it's real ...

    I'd want to have that one looked at by a specialist

    Almost certainly cooked, and I would also question the authenticity of the coin. There are some deceptive fake Trade dollars out there, and something about this one just doesn't smell right to me. I'm not sure what. Maybe the reverse lettering, maybe the obverse strike...

    I'm not swearing it's fake because I really don't know, but I would be wary of it.

    I'm 100% sure that the color is AT ...

    And I don't like the roughness on the rims while the surfaces are relatively smooth. AND maybe I'm nuts, but the expression on the eagle's face looks weird to me. I think this coin might not be real.

    Wouldn't surprise me if it's a fake. Bill Jones beat me to it. I used to own a very well done 1875 CC fake Trade $ that fooled most non specialists in the series. The smooth surfaces contrasted with the rim damage IS very suspect, but the coin was made well enough otherwise.

    IMO this is a classic case of purple AT toning on silver type which you should avoid like the plague.

    It is also suspicious that the Miss Liberty's head seems so softly struck while the eagle's details are so perfect. Some TDs came with a softly struck head (like the 73 P), but I don't think the 75 CC is one of them.

    Thanks for the quick replies. I strongly suspected it was counterfeit because the surface looks a bit rough under a loupe. Cast counterfeits are lighter than struck authentics, so I'll simply have it weighed next time I'm in the local coin shop.

    It's a fake....the feathers as they blend in on the left shoulder (as you look at the eagle) are of Type II (without the berry). However, it is a Type I reverse. There are other subtle details as well....trust me, it's a fake. I've seen this reverse being sold on eBay the last couple of months. Completely bogus.

    With the highly informed opinions/comments by Keoj and TDN, among others, you can now bet (and win) that the coin is a fake.

    Some other details that Keoj did not mention: look at the top-most arrowhead and many/most of the letters on the reverse -- they should not have that melted look. I also don't like one of the claws. (I think I see others, but I'm not positive.)

    Good one EVP!!!!!. Also the "CC's" are not a type (shape and size) that are correct for this date. The leaves on the reverse are weird, the feathers are not right either....it's just not right. I think that TDN stated once that a huge percentage of the Trade Dollars on eBay are fake.....I concur.

    Thanks, Keoj. Actually, very little of the rev looked right to me. I can't articulate the nuances of this series as well as you (and TDN), but I can spot most fakes pretty easily. Now give me a Seated Dollar and I can really have some fun!
