question about CC morgans

Are their any decent looking CC's for around 100 dollars or so? Just turned 16 so I have some money to spend image

Not of you would like to own a Mint State example. A decent (MS-63) coin is going to cost you something over $200.

An AU will run you $100 or a little more. Maybe you can find a clean one (clean = minimal bag marks not CLEANED) with just a wisper of wear. Look for an 1882, '83 or '84 CC. Those will be the most likely candidates.

No. These coins are 'baggy' for the grade to begin with. Bill's right re the dates to look for, but to my eye, most Uncs. I've seen are ugly. Most of them I've seen in MS 63 are butt ugly. Some in MS 65 look okay, but the only one I have is an 84 CC in MS 66 (which will break your budget, I'm afraid), which is truly a beautiful coin.

Yea, MS-63 is almost always pretty yukkyimage especially in the CC dates because the services relax the standards. Of late the services' grading has gotten softer than ever. image

I've sold some nice looking MS-64 coins. That's the grade I like to find because it's a good compromise between the high prices for MS-65+ coins and the ugly MS-63 coins.

I agree with Bill on this one. Here is an 82CC in a PCGS 64 rattler that is a clean, nice coin costing about $250 retail- not bad for a 64 CC coin.

If your limit is $100, I would find a nice unmolested VF circulated example. These can be had for well under $100 for several dates, and are still nice looking coins when original.

That's real PQ coin, JRocco. I'm not saying that you would get an upgrade if you cracked it, but it's definitely worth a little more than the average CC dollar in MS-64.

JRocco - Agree w Bill. The cheek on your coin is exceptionally clean. FWIW, if you resubmit your coin, the only thing I think might prevent an upgrade is the soft hair over the ear. Your coin is head and shoulders above the average 4 (the ones I've seen are nasty). For that matter, the cheek looks better than most 5s I've seen.

Yep, this would be a great way to go -- this coin would probably be worth about $100. You can't tell me this beauty doesn't have some good stories about the Old West in her!

  • I'm with Eric on this one. I just sold a decent example for $95.

I'm also 16, and got one: 1884-CC PCGS MS64 in an old green holder, I paid somewhat more than you would expect, as it is a very PQ coin:

If you can't afford such a grade (and I do understand that, as I could only dream of this coin 8 months ago when I turned 16image), I would go for a nicely circulated 1878-CC. It has several advantages over say a 1882-CC:

-It's a first year of issue coin
-They did circulate, as most 1882-CC,1883-CC and 1884-CC did not circulate, those were stored in governments vaults until the 1960's with the treasury releases
-If you read (and learn) the stories behind Carson City's, you will smile because your coin was there at that time

I would stick with a problem free ANACS graded coin, those will be somewhat cheaper than PCGS or NGC graded coin. Untill you learn some more, I wouldn't buy a raw coin if I were you, especially not over the internet.

    Hope this helps,

Here's a somewhat different suggestion: If you like CC mint coins, buy the dimes, quarters, and half dollars instead of Morgans. Even the commonest date CC half dollar is much scarcer than the 1878, 1882-1884 CC Morgan dollars. You could get several circulated CC Seated dimes & quarters for $100, and I think they're a better investment in the long run. Circ. CC dollars have tripled or quadrupled in value in the past 10 years- how much further do you really think they're going to go? You could buy an MS-63 1884-CC Morgan for about $50 in 1995. Now you're talking about $200 for that coin, and a VG will cost you $70. I really don't see why people find CC Morgans attractive at current levels.

The "capped" CC is actually a large CC over small CC variety, VAM 3.

There are about a dozen CC dollars in PCGS holders graded between G and XF selling Monday on Teletrade. Would take a look.
If decent means MS63+, maybe you won't be interested. Decent to me is a pretty key or semi-key in F or VF.

Here are images of some of my Carson City Morgans in my VF20-35 album. All were under $100. If you like the look of a 'hard working' circulated coin that did its job in U.S. commerce for a couple of decades, then you should have yourself a nice original VF-XF Carson City Morgan.

I kinda agree that a CC Dime, Quarter & Half would be something that you can do.....

Also kinda agree that the Dollars are kinda high at current levels, I paid $110 for my 84-CC MS-63 a few years ago..... Now it is double that.....
