  • Thanks. Now, envision all 49 toned the same way, front and back....

Pretty cool, I'm interested in how that color happened.
  • The story is remarkable. I'm hoping for an article in Coin World or Numismatic News. I'll tell it here within the next few days if they don't run the story. At this point, it doesn't look like they will. I'm biased, because it's my set....but it's insane.

I submitted a couple of those golden toned dollars because I thought they were cool.

  • Very nice. Was it naturally toned?
  • Thanks for the welcome. If the board generates enough interest, maybe I can use it as leverage to get them to run an article.

Since they are modern commems, and all have the same toning -- it would actually surprise me if they WEREN'T artificially toned.

  • Have these been dipped in Jeweluster that had gold dipped into it prior? Seems like that could give the modern commems a nice even gold color.

Why is everyone acting like they understand this thread or what he/she is saying? Cue the Twilight Zone music again. I haven't seen a mass chain-yank like this before.
    Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

  • I am not trying to yank anyone's chain. I'm having a hard time resizing these pics. Here are the last four coins in the set. The story: one at a time with many rejections, I built the set. Sending in 2 or more got rejected. One at a time: a good shot at slabbing. The grades stink. So what you get in color, you lose in grade. But 49 together....eye-catching. How?? Heat. Specifically? I'm glad to tell. Any guess first?

oven baked on a cookie sheet with olive oil brushed on ?
  • Everyone in a frying pan. High heat. 4 minutes. Nothing else. No chemicals.

You're an amateur. When you get monster toned into slabs that bring stupid money like the real pros do, post them for us to see.

Isnt that a little harsh? I think its quite interesting, if his story is to be believed that he got all of these coins past PCGS into slabs when the toning is AT. I'm not surprised, but I do give him credit if he's being honest.

Credit for what? I have a difficult time finding any value to taking perfectly good coins and ruining them by throwing them into a frying pan just to prove PCGS will slab them. Maybe others haven't figured this out, so here's a new flash.....PCGS holders AT coins. Although uninspired ones like the ones in this thread won't do much damage to the hobby I love, the real pros are going to hurt a lot of collectors. I believe, like you do, that someday we are going to have a cost effective technology to bring this AT game to an end, and the resulting damage in the hobby will be huge. This is a topic that deserves harsh.IMHO
  • I'm in-between baths for the kids and taking care of my spouse with a broken foot, so I'm in and out of this thread. No doubt that I AM an amateur. All I know is I did it. For all non believers: try it. Now....so we can hear the results. Take a common commem like the Constitution proof dollar. Get out a frying pan. Any pan. Put it in. Put it on the highest heat you can. In five minutes or so, it oxidizes into the golden color. Don't go too long. Once it starts turning gold, it's about one minute. take it out as best as you can. A metal soup spoon; slide it out, etc. Put it on a plate you don't care about. 1/2 hour to cool. Presto! Let me know your results.

    Fats,

If his intent was the help expose the fact that PCGS holders AT'd coins, then I think he does deserve some credit. Getting this kind of thing out in the open is a benefit to the hobby. How many times have we heard these whispers by "those in the know" who steadfastly refuse to reveal any details - effectively protecting those who do this stuff?

No! This is getting ridiculous. This isn't a Coin Doctor Convention. Throw some of that water, cold, on your face and come out of your self-absorbed reverie. Three threads to get to this?

Why waste one's time with fugly AT Commemoratives when one could have desireable NT coins (such as this one) by removing the coin from it's plastic encapsulation and placing it raw in the box of issue for a few years??

    image
  • The point is that a self proclaimed amateur can AT 49 coins by using a frying pan all a nice golden color and get them slab. I think its kinda cool he's admitting it here on the boards, same as the thread discussing how to artificially tone coins in the old PCGS rattler holders and then getting them reholder and into the new slabs.

Anything that adds to the education of those that frequent the boards is great IMHO.

Russ, you are way too insightful to buy into his righteous cause. This guy is wearing his frying pan as a badge of honor. This guy is all about himself, not about educating the community.

<< <i>I guess I don't understand your comment that "of course it was...it was in a PCGS holder".... >>

-When you play coy, you lose credibility.
  • You're both right. I am into educating the world on this. Toning and slabbing have serious problems that run deep. But this is my 15 minutes of fame. I've probably ruined my relationship with PCGS forever. I'm out there hanging with nothing to gain. Yes, I am saying, "look at me and what I did". But the real issue is this project exposes many flaws in the system.
  • As soon as I can get to it, there is still a little more story to tell.
