I am in agreement with LordMarcovan on this one...the worries over AT are inflated. IF you like the look of a coin, pay what you want for it, and don't sweat the origin of the toning. Be prepared that someone else may not like it as much as you, and may not be willing to pay as much for it. I think those cooked commems look pretty neat, especially since it is a matching set. I have paid extra for toned coins. I have also been the beneficiary of selling coins that are toned and the prices were higher than untoned versions. To each his own. IF the AT risk worries you, don't put your money into a coin that is priced higher because of toning.

Are the worries over AT inflated? Probably. Everyone has been aware of the problems for a long time. Problems that probably don't have solutions. So what? The coin market has survived. Toned coins have survived. And will continue to do so. The Golden Silver Collection and all of the discussions it generates, may just help people become more aware of the issues, and buy and sell coins based on this heigthened awareness. I've already learned quite a lot from the people on this board. The observation that "worries are inflated" appears perfectly valid.

I think the worry is that if infact what we have here is proof of the inability of a major third party grading service to tell the difference between AT and NT, then it basically puts in to question a lot of other coins which, may be genuinely toned and some which may not. I honestly think that if you try to sell your set of golden toned dollars, all of them looking the same, you'll have a lot of people raising their brows and passing on them - this will basically only cause you and PCGS to get a black eye. So you're bringing them to our attention to teach us about the process - great - now we'll know what not to get. As for the TPGs, Im sure they'll weather this storm, if indeed it is a storm, much like they weathered the AT Buffalo and Proof Jefferson debacles. In the end, the only ones really hurt are the collectors.

Unfortunately for collectors, you're probably right. By the way, can someone set up a link to the new thread by mgoodm3 entitled, "I tried the frying pan toning method"? I don't know how to set up the link. Unbelievable. Text

The storm hasn't even really started yet, just some wind and dark clouds on the horizon.

did you forget the [sarcastic] [/sarcastic] ?????
  • I would publish this saga on my website. PM me or email me at Carl@CarlWohlforth.com if you want some publicity on this issue. I reserve the right to edit the contents based on personal frying experiments... I would fry some right now but for a few minor impediments I hope to do away with shortly.

First my wife won't let me fry a coin in HER pans. Hmmm. Second I don't have any modern %99.9 silver coins I'm willing to experiment with. Once I get a cheap pan I can try some cheap circulated silver then, maybe, I will try some modern commens... Or maybe some Silver rounds...
  • kaytsok I tried to PM you.
So I will just ask here.
So what coin that is toned as you did will you sell me?

  • When I joined this Forum I really trusted PCGS, But after reading these threads for a few months I've I've lost it (my trust). I have a few Morgans slabbed by PCGS that have a beautiful tone, and paid a premium for them. Now after this post I'am thinking about selling them and get out while the getten's good. Used to believe that if a coin was slabbed by PCGS that it was carved in stone, guess not!!!

I'm not sure it's that bad. But in the meantime, here's another pic. I should have the set back from the ANA by Tuesday. I'll work on a pic of the entire set.
  • For any one interested, The Golden Silver Collection will be on exhibit at the PAN show in Monoreville, PA in May 2005..

I got the set back today from Kansas City. This is the best I can do on the pics. One of these days, I'll figure out how to get a bigger, more detailed shot.
