  • So I went into another local Target tonight and found one opened box. It had obviously been searched through so I didn't buy anything but what's with all the small tears in the upper right corner of each pack. I assume this is a method of searching but what does this really accomplish?
  • envoy98envoy98 Posts: 4,000 ✭✭
the game used are bright white and stick out like a sore thumb... probably what they're looking for, or the chromes which are "bowed" are very easy to tell as well. Ironically though, the "money cards" ie. autos etc don't attract any special attention. Though the auto/game used are big bucks if you hit one... I won't even buy the opened boxes...though after tearing through this case of retail, I'm thinking abou it. This case was a lot better than either of my 2 hobby case breaks, hands down.
  • OK gentleman, I am all in. The talk about Heritage last year and this peaked my interest. Thought in the past few weeks about building a set and went back and forth on buying a box. Got one today - hobby.

First let me say that I have the most wonderful wife in the world. Not only is she a major hottie, but also a rabid sports fan. Get this. For Xmas her boss gave her a gift certificate for a local card/memorabilia shop. I figured she would buy an auto 8 X 10 or something from one of her favorite players (that's PLAYERS, I am her favorite PLAYA). Before she left I mentioned Heritage and that I might get a box. Later she calls me from the store and asks about Heritage. Turns out she couldn't find anything for her and bought me a box. If you ever hear that I have screwed up my marriage please come to my house and shoot me because I will surely be insane.

Got a few chromes, a couple Then and Now, Flashbacks, and an Arod GU bat. No autos.

Don't know the SPs yet. Have to learn more about the series. Waiting on Basilone's spreadsheet and could use suggestions on other lists too.

Product is good, only one noticeable print mark.

More later as I will check the stores for retail this weekend.

Thanks for helping get me into building a nice set. Hope to have more posts with good stuff to report.

Besides it gives me a chance to remind Joe Stalin on yet another thread that the Bucs will go nowhere in '05 and Gruden will be doing his best Adam Sandler when he is the waterboy for Manchester United in '06.

Off to show the wife my utmost in appreciation for her unselfish deed. image

  • Busted my first box of retail. Nothing spectacular. Killebrew bat card and an SP in every pack. Odd, though, I've busted 2 hobby boxes, 1 retail box, and several loose packs and have yet to pull either president or a single refractor. My luck is running thin I guess.image

How many chromes did you get in each hobby box? I figure that you should get 1 refractor and 3 chromes on average per hobby box. And I got the same from one retail box also. Not as many SP's as you got though - so perhaps that's the trade off?

good god, I have seen a retail pack yet. Im grabbing my helmet and gun and going out...someone cover me!

(will be missing for the next hour)

  • Stone, I forgot to mention the retail box was just an eight pack box. I got 4 chrome in the first hobby, three in the second, and two from the 8-pack retail box. Any thoughts? Just bad luck on hitting the right odds?

    Chris
It looks like they changed their strategy this year - last year the full "booster" boxes were 11 packs/box and 30 bucks and we got on average 11 SP's and random chromes.

If it is only 8 packs, the odds will decrease on your yield. You may only see only 1 - and 2 would be great luck IMO. And some boosters will have no chromes!

What did you pay for the box?

    your friend
    Mike
    Mike
  • 19.99 for the retail and just under 65 for the 2 hobby boxes. On another note, did anybody else see the Jonas Salk 1 of 1 on ebay?

  • Yes, yellow, YUK!!!!

    ----------------------------

In the town where I was born
Lived a man who sailed to sea
And he told us of his life
    In the land of submarines

So we sailed up to the sun
Till we found the sea of green
And we lived beneath the waves
    In our yellow submarine

We all live in our yellow submarine,
    Yellow submarine, yellow submarine
We all live in our yellow submarine,
    Yellow submarine, yellow submarine

And our friends are all on board
Many more of them live next door
And the band begins to play

We all live in our yellow submarine,
    Yellow submarine, yellow submarine
We all live in our yellow submarine,
    Yellow submarine, yellow submarine

As we live a life of ease
Everyone of us has all we need
Sky of blue and sea of green
    In our yellow submarine.

We all live in our yellow submarine,
    Yellow submarine, yellow submarine
We all live in our yellow submarine,
    Yellow submarine, yellow submarine

As a vintage collector whose favorite Topps year is 1956, I've been looking forward to this year's Heritage since Topps started the brand four years ago. I've bought 5 hobby boxes (2 @$75 apiece and 3 more @ $65 each) from two local card stores and have opened three of them so far. I love the cards and chasing the SPs and the inserts is a blast. I've had pretty good luck on the first three boxes especially the third (details in a moment).

As a baseball fan, I'm of course a stat freak and I (obsessively) track my progress in completing the various components of the Master set (base, SPs and inserts for me). So after three boxes, here's what I have to report:

    Base card set completion: 329/386=85.2%
    SP set completion: 35/110=31.8%
    Insert set completion: 14/35=40.0%

In addition, I've pulled 12 chromes, one of which is a refractor, from the three boxes.

In Box #1, no relics nor autos, in Box #2, this appeared towards the bottom of the box:

    image

Then in Box #3, this was pulled a few packs in:

    image

And finally, later in the same box....

    image

First time I've pulled an auto from a non-guaranteed box (but my son, 11 years old at the time, pulled a Tommy Lasorda Real One Auto from three loose packs of '03 Heritage he bought when he came with me to the card shop a couple years ago.)

Looked this guy up in the baseball encyclopedia: "Red" Swanson didn't have a distinguished career in the bigs, but at least he made it up there playing a couple of seasons with the Pirates and winning 3 games in his career.

Will post results of my other two boxes (and subsequent completion progress) after their breaks.

Looking forward to trading with other Heritage fans on the boards!

    Not bad Andy
I'm still collating so not such what I need yet.
The jury is still out on the back variations - that could be a show stopper!

There will be plenty of trading real soon here - I have a few friends sending me chromes - getting the 110 card set is a challenge!

    Good luck

Thanks, Mike. I don't think I'm going to bother with the "grey" vs. the "white" backs -- has Topps released anything official concerning these potential variations? Are "whites" tougher pulls than "greys"? Anyone have any idea about the relative seeding ratios?
  • BasiloneBasilone Posts: 2,492 ✭✭
I'm pretty confident that the number is going to stay at 220 cards. That would represent 4 sheets of 55 cards each.

joestalin, I have picked up two full pristine retail boxes thus far. The results I previously posted. These have kept me from the last two kuhlman boxes I have. Work is crazy for me right now and I like to savor these boxes. Usually one to a night. Wal Marts by me are bursting with Heritage. Target however I have not seen a drop yet.

I opened two hobby boxes of my own and thought I'd pass on what I got. Overall I would guess this is above average. In the two boxes I received:

    25 short prints
10 chrome cards, including refractors of David Wright (#182/556) and Mark Prior (#172/556)
    5 new age performers
    2 Then and Now
    3 Flashbacks
1 Flashback Al Kaline Stadium Seat card
1 Clubhouse Collecetion Albert Pujols game used back
1 "Spook" Jacobs Real One Auto

I just saw an ebay auction for 25 sp's go for $77.00 and a Spook Jacobs auto go for $32.00. I paid $130 including shipping for my two boxes and looks like I could sell my sp's and auto for about $110.00. Is it just me, or is Topps Heritage about the only product you can bust and come out close to even on without really hitting the big "homerun"?

I'll most likely sell/trade my chromes, refractors, sp's, etc. and complete the base set. Either that or buy two more boxes to get my fix.

Enjoy reading about the breaks. Still have not gotten around to buying a few boxes to crack myself. My local dealer had hobby boxes on sale for $77 and that seemed just slightly too expensive.

I know this is not the trade board, but if anyone has any 04 Heritage base/SPs to sell or trade please let me know. Still trying to wrap up my 04 set. I didn't think a lot of the hardcore Heritage guys read the trade/sell board or I would have posted there. Sorry for the momentary interruption....now back to ripping guys. Thanks.

    Hi Heritage Fans,

Retail packs are now live in the Detroit area (started last night). I have been in 3 Targets and 2 Meijer stores,
and the same story in each one: 2 or 3 of the "2 rows of 12 packs" retail boxes opened up. Each one with 2 or
3 packs missing, each one appeared to have been searched. I found one with 24 packs in it, so I bought it. One
day late of course, because yesterday I used my 15% off coupon at Meijer for diapers and such, but I digress.

Anyway, 24 packs, no autos, no relics, 5 chromes including A-Rod and Piazza, 5 or 6 total of the other inserts (Then and
Now, Flashbacks, etc). Not sure yet on the short prints because I don't know who the short prints are (I need to read
    this thread again, I know).

Not sure I agree that you always break even with Heritage, but I will say this: What an absolutely beautiful product.
    I love the team cards.

    Peace,

  • No retail yet at WalMart in Southwest FL, but found four boxes in Target. Nothing at Toy R Us.

As I glanced through the packs I said in my best Archie Bunker voice, "die you pack searchin' scum you."

These packs were wrinkled, small holes poked through where the scum rubbed the corners in the packs. And at a shelf right in front of the customer service desk no less.

No booster boxes or other sealed boxes.

Since I still need much of the base set I picked 8 of the least mangled packs. 1 refractor, some SPs and a few Flashbacks.

ok, I am a total lurker here on these boards. I've had a lot of fun reading the posts and box/case breaks here.

I didn't do too bad on my case break. 96 SPs (all 8 boxes yielded the exact ratio of SPs), 6 boxes w/ 3 chromes - 2 had 4, 7 refractors and 1 black refractor (Ichiro), ARod bat, Soriano jersey, Manny Ramirez bat, Aparicio seat and Yogi Berra blue ink auto. Of the 96 SPs, only had one dupe, so I was left only 18 cards short of a master set. Not bad, considering I've read of guys open two or more cases and still missing cards. I think I'd be a little ticked.

Anyway, the reason I posted is this: are we any closer to finalizing a white-back list? Does it still stand at 220? Is the list on page 3 the one we're dealing with?

    Thanks!

Well I finally was able to track down a box at Target. Bought it and the remains of another box (10 packs):

2 Flashbacks (Ernie Banks and Don Larsen)
    2 Then and Nows (#9 and #10)
2 New Age Performers (Garciaparra and Helton)
    6 Chromes (5 of the /1956 and 1 /556)
1 Clubhouse Collection GU Bat (Alex Rodriguez)
    and both checklists.

Just curious, where can I find a list of the SP's? And what do you all think of these pulls? Average? Below?

Just came in from dinner and went to a target store and had a partially filled retail - didn't bother - never feel good about them.

There is no boosters yet in Wally or Target - will check Monday.

On the 1/1's - I think Topps didn't hit a homer with them - I was surprised to see that the first one - the Rickenbacker did not make reserve at 560 bucks. I thought it would go for a grand to 1500$ It's partially the subject matter and partially the questionable design IMO.

    Any thoughts?

    Mike,

Actually the Rickenbacker (1 of 1) was pulled early and most likely sold privately.

The seller ended this listing early because the item is no longer available for sale.

220 cards appears to be the "magic number"....after 30+ cases that I know to have been busted by other collectors...only 220 have surfaced. (4 sheets of 55 cards each).

    Thanx John
I didn't read the auction - it was on my "end" list and just copied it w/o reading - my bad. I don't particularly like it being pulled that way since I would like to know what the item sells for.
Did you bookmark the other two 1/1's up?
Considering how few there are, I'm impressed that 3 have surfaced already!

I have to check out the Salk.

I agree with you...the design is horrible in my opinion. They could of make them a bit nicer...with maybe a full bleed picture of the autograph subject, etc.

2005 05 Topps Heritage 1956 Cuts Jonas Salk 1/1 Rare

    Sold for $449.

I would of paid more than that...just saw the auction now. Just to have one of the cut cards as a companion piece to my set. (Although $449 could by me a alot of heritage from previous years)

The Salk sold for 400+ bucks. Actually not bad since the guy was a great MD and scientist but not what I would call a celebrity in a MTV generation kind of way.
