Well, I'm off to see the wizard. (Target/Wal Mart/Toys r Us) I happen to have all 3 (plus a kmart) within 3 blocks or so of my work. Will report back on my findings in an hour or two.
By the way basilone, nice buy on that box. Looks like a retail box, $50/box is what I paid for my retail case on pre-sell so you did well. Looks like the odds are about the same as hobby for all the stuff that matters. I'll know more on Friday when I bust my case.
agreed. Your odds are so long on pulling a 1/1 cut sig anyway, there is really little to no difference.
**RETAIL REPORT*** Well, stopped at Wal-Mart, Target and Toys R' Us.
Wal-Mart - Had 2 packs of black diamond basketball and a lot of yu-gi-oh. nothing else....not even the variety boxes like most wal-marts.
Toys r us - nothing but yu-gi-oh
Target- 12x2 boxes of retail which had been thouroughly searched. the packs were all messed up, and wrinkled even. I was going to take a pic with my camera phone. No booster boxes though. So, that leads me to believe that either the booster boxes aren't out yet, or whoever searched the retail box grabbed all the booster boxes as well. I'll check some other targets over the next couple of days since this one gets their shipments on Wednesday mornings.

Was at Toys r us today - looks bare.
Went to Target - the Excel rep (Alvin) was there - they are the vendor for target since they don't buy anything direct. He told me he is clueless when they will get TH. And for what it's worth, he refers to retail boxes that get opened - Pack Boxes as opposed to those that get sold closed as Full Boxes. He says that his stores usually get stocked in the evening unless he does it himself - in that case, they hold the boxes for him in the storage area.
Will be heading out the Wally world this eve most likely.
I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.
Thanks a lot guys......... I got the bug and had to go out to Target. They had the retail boxes all open. For $2.99 a pack, I wasn't going to buy the whole thing, so I just picked out 18. Nothing at all to report about until I got to the 16th pack and then I pulled a Ernie Banks Record card Auto 7/25. This is probably the nicest pull I've had in awhile. You guys sure know how to start a frenzy! Wick

I'm starting to collate now and my boxes are yielding pretty good balance. Having said that, where I have a choice of 3 cards, I am picking the best one - I'm noticing a few cards with print lines or scratches - have checked with a lens yet and some very light vertical "dents" on the right side of the cards similar to the horizontal ones I saw last year but not as pronounced. No biggie, since Topps has a great return policy.

<< <i>After 4 boxes...no new "light backs" to add to the master list. It still stands at 220 cards. >>
I am not surprised to see it stay at 220. Topps typically uses 55 card groups now for issues (3x55=165 Bowman Draft Picks, 4x55=220 Bowman Chrome football, 2x55=110 cards in Topps Heritage Chrome, etc.). That is because the sheets are 110 cards (10 wide by 11 down). This list may go higher, but do not be surprised if 220 is the magic number.
Can someone please list the sp's and variations again. I just picked up two hobby boxes and would like to have a clue before I bust them so I know what i'm looking for.
Also, did someone mention once about returning damaged (or in some cases not so damaged) cards directly to Topps for replacement cards? Does this work?
Local Target had 3 open 24-pack boxes, no blasters. I decided to go with 2 8-packers of Bowman Draft and 2 loose Heritage packs. Got zip out of the Heritage, and nothing too exciting out of the BDP, either. I guess my luck for the week was blown on comics and winning some tough 75s on ebay cheap.

Topps Return:
1. Address: Topps, 401 York Ave., Duryea, PA, 18642-2035 - 800-489-9149; for replacement also put ATTENTION: Consumer Relations.
2. If you want to return "card for card" exchange - limit it to 25 cards - list the cards by number in order.
3. You can also send the cards for "random" replacement - I recommend this for commons since you will most likely get SP's as part of the random replacement - I sent them in 100 per request - no complaints and from a total of 200 (approx) replacements got back about 45-50 SP's!
don't worry about the condition they don't care - I ding them so that it is a no brainer!
4. The last time I sent cards in, they did request that in the future, I submit them with a proof of purchase or UPC code tab from the box.
5. I recommend that you give minimum insurance as a "record" of the submission in case there is a problem.
The service last year was lightning fast and cards came to me in good shape. This is definitely worth the time! I have noticed two problems this year - some cards with a slight vertical indentation on the left side near the white border and some very faint print lines/scratch also vertical around the portraits - nothing as bad as last year but still interesting - there's no reason for any of this crap - this is the simplest of production cards compared to the UV coated, "Dufex", Chromed technology of other cards IMO.
Any other questions, please LMK - I'm here for ya!
I have to ask a few questions about this issue to my respected fellow collectors. I have not gotten into collecting a modern issue for years. Last one I spent any money on was 96 Topps Baseball because of the Mantle influence. Yes, that was a waste. I have read posts about the virtues of Heritage from serious collectors since I have been visiting these boards, so it must be good stuff. IMO, vintage guys seem to have annointed it as a worthwhile modern issue they endorse.
So, my questions are as follows.....and I'm not being adversarial. I have never bought a pack. "Sell me" on the virtues. I'm stupid.
1. What makes this issue so special?
2. Basis posts, there appears to be a plethora of variations. I understand how this feeds the thrill of "the hunt", but variations in general across the board on modern issues is what typically turns off vintage collectors to pursuing/investing in modern issues. Am I wrong?
3. My take is that the Topps folks have done a great job at seeding some good stuff, but are "sneaking up" on everyone by including surprise variations. For those who were looking forward to the issue being released, do you feel at all that you were "hooked", and will now spend more money than you originally expected?
4. Besides the fun of pack-busting, if you were not going to re-sell some of your pulls immediately -- would you still invest in the set with the intent to try to complete it.....thinking it may have some value down the road?
Thanks guys. Hope this enlightens me and stimulates some discussion . Best regards.
Proud of my 16x20 autographed and framed collection - all signed in person. Not big on modern - I'm stuck in the past!
Harry It is the most successful "vintage" retro look set that is following a sequential theme of starting with the 1952T design and moving forward each year since 2001.
The design is clean and classic - and they added the chromes to "bridge" the gap between retro vintage and modern appeal.
The set is popular with vintage guys who still follow baseball and the players and wouldn't mind having some of the new RC's that would otherwise elude them.
Also affordability - you are talking about a 3 buck pack which is cheaper when you buy a hobby box early or the 'full pack' booster boxes at 11 packs for 30 bucks. That's a lot of entertainment for the money!!!
Good questions and fair enough. As a set builder of the 60's, I enjoy the hunt for the extra goodies. Now I do have to admit, the amount of money I pour into the Heritage setsis excessive. Typically, I bust 3-4 boxes and still end up buying a lot of the missing cards. If you do the math, the $300-$400 value puts me at a loss when I complete the set. I suppose that I enjoy the Heritage because of the nostalgic looks. The cards are cheaply made and must cost $10 bucks a box to produce. I like the Topps Bigs of '88-'89 much better. The Heritage set is the only modern set I have collected the last 3 years. I prefer to work on my 1968 set first and foremost. Most of the GU cards are sort of hokey. An old piece of wood from some chair with a star's picture on it-not much meaning here. Now with the hype starting on the light vs. the dark backs starting...not sure what this is all about. Many sets throughout the years had ink changes, etc. The bottom line, if you don't think you'll enjoy cracking an $80 box of cards, then don't. You won't come close to a set and you most likely won't get your money back unless you pull a desireable chase card. Out of 3 boxes, I got 1 M Cabrerra bat card, no autos, and no other goodies. Oh well, I still enjoy putting this set together, even if I put $400 into a set that will drop to $250-$300. It is called collecting, not investing. Good luck..John

Hi John That's how I feel about "pack searchers!"
Good words about Heritage. Every set collector is on a mission - a hunt...and it's not a sprint but rather a marathon journey till the last card is neatly pressed into place.
I don't mind people talking about picking up some money along the way while putting the set together - heck, Perry made some righteous bucks on his Robinson auto pull! As you said, this is a "collector" set and not for investment.
If you want a good item for investment - collect long term capital gains mutual funds with a good 20 year track record; balance that with a highly rated bond; throw in, perhaps a few high risk funds or stocks; some blue chips stocks (Valero oil has done nicely this year!); maybe tie up some in cash and heck - take a look in 20 years and hopefully your money has tripled! Just messin, I heard a guy say this today at the barber shop!
<< <i>I don't mind people talking about picking up some money along the way while putting the set together - heck, Perry made some righteous bucks on his Robinson auto pull! As you said, this is a "collector" set and not for investment. >>
its great to be able to flip a few cards for profit.. i was able to sell the frank auto and pay for the cards i want to keep, plus made a few extra bucks!
i dont think i will put a set together this year.. i've kinda decided i'll just collect the regular chrome refractors and a few cards of players i like..
Beuatiful cards, fellas. Picked up two hobby boxes earlier in the day, and then cleaned out Walmart tonight! Good fun ... great looking cards, and the occasional insert. Anyone send these in for grading?
NJMH-most of the cards I've seen coming out of my packs (456 packs so far) have some kind of damage. They are little better than last year, but I'm still seeing some roller marks, some chipping on the edges and a lot of the sp's/inserts found in the "money spot" are coming out with a dinged lower corner.
I just checked the pop report and there is nothing from 2005 yet, but here is all that has been graded in 04. Notice, only 12 cards.
2004 TOPPS HERITAGE CARD NO NAME VARIETY 6 8 9 10 TOTAL Total: 1 5 5 1 12 19 CHASE UTLEY 0 0 1 0 1 43 JOE BORAWSKI 1 0 0 0 1 100 ALEX RODRIGUEZ 0 1 0 0 1 120 FRANK THOMAS 0 0 2 0 2 200 ALBERT PUJOLS 0 2 1 1 4 279 DELMON YOUNG 0 1 0 0 1 332 SCOTT ROLEN 0 0 1 0 1 402 GARRET ANDERS 0 1 0 0 1
As you can see...(maybe) , there are 12 total cards graded, 1 a 6, 1 a 10, the majority were 8's. Looks like people graded some of the autos and the chromes and refractors more than the base cards.
I don't want to dig back and check so this may be redundant - here is a scan of the gray and light back variations.
Heritage hit San Antonio either last night or this morning - single pack retail but no full box boosters.
As Envoy said, the quality control is still lacking with this product - and IMO, there's no good excuse - if everyone sent cards back, they would get the message.
Still a great product! Not sure where they are going with this back variation thing. Also, did you notice that the cartoon is different in the regular vs. the SP variation on the base set?

No duplicates, but also no Cubs (except for Hairston Jr. in an Orioles uni...but a SP as well ).

"My dad wanted me to be a baseball player."
Also, did someone mention once about returning damaged (or in some cases not so damaged) cards directly to Topps for replacement cards? Does this work?
Thanks for any help.

It is the most successful "vintage" retro look set that is following a sequential theme of starting with the 1952T design and moving forward each year since 2001.

Hi John
That's how I feel about "pack searchers!"
Just messin, I heard a guy say this today at the barber shop!

its great to be able to flip a few cards for profit.. i was able to sell the frank auto and pay for the cards i want to keep, plus made a few extra bucks!
i dont think i will put a set together this year.. i've kinda decided i'll just collect the regular chrome refractors and a few cards of players i like..
I just checked the pop report and there is nothing from 2005 yet, but here is all that has been graded in 04. Notice, only 12 cards.
2004 TOPPS HERITAGE
CARD NO NAME VARIETY 6 8 9 10 TOTAL
Total: 1 5 5 1 12
19 CHASE UTLEY 0 0 1 0 1
43 JOE BORAWSKI 1 0 0 0 1
100 ALEX RODRIGUEZ 0 1 0 0 1
120 FRANK THOMAS 0 0 2 0 2
200 ALBERT PUJOLS 0 2 1 1 4
279 DELMON YOUNG 0 1 0 0 1
332 SCOTT ROLEN 0 0 1 0 1
402 GARRET ANDERS 0 1 0 0 1
As you can see...(maybe) , there are 12 total cards graded, 1 a 6, 1 a 10, the majority were 8's.
Looks like people graded some of the autos and the chromes and refractors more than the base cards.

BigCrumbs! I made over $250 last year!
