PCGS should ditch the new banner adds on this forum

shylockshylock Posts: 4,288 ✭✭✭
Let the dealers find creative ways to publicize themselves here. Very few get by us without a "this belongs in the B/S board" reply. But if they're clever we let them slide. I find the new Pinnacle banner a real turnoff.

Hmm, I never noticed any banners. My ad blocking software probably caught it. I guess I don't begrudge PCGS for trying to make some money off the board. So long as it doesn't get out of hand.

just curious...........what makes you so sure that Pinnacle is paying something to post that?

a lot of people here are paying 99.00/year.

    Paul,

As I noted in another thread, the amount of bandwidth that a forum this large uses doesn't come cheap. Nor does the hardware necessary for the piggy software used here. Many other popular forums went to advertising long ago. In many cases, it was either that or shut down due to costs. In other words, PCGS may have had no choice.

Edited to add: I do agree, though, that the banner used could and should be less intrusive.

For purposes of constructive feedback to both Pinnacle and CU, do those of you who dislike the ad have a problem with the concept of the ad, itself, or the fact that it "moves"?
  • Options
Don't mind the ad as a matter of policy, but the excessive movement is annoying

I'm tolerant to dealers who find creative ways to advertise here if they're willing to work for their money and post something worthwhile. I think most of us are just as tolerant. Flashing banner adds don't qualify and don't belong here -- this is the most drastic change of policy I've seen here in 4 years.

Gotta pay the rent somehow. In case you haven't noticed, this probably costs CU something. Though it wish the damn thing was static.

Now that was a deep, well thought out response. There wouldn't be folks here if they had a cover charge. This site is here mainly to increase the sales of CU's services. Would the registry exist in the numbers it does now without this site, hardly. This site provides brand awareness, a chance for the company to communicate with customers, an opportunity for its customers to sell its services to other potential customers. I could go on but hopefully you get the drift.

I hope you don't do marketing for your employer.

Your right, I paid for a membership to a stock forum. There are no ad's for paid members. Freebie/loader "members" get tons of ads.

Would be nice if the ad poster had an incentive - like 10% off for Forum members with 500+ posts and over 1 year membership or something like that.

I respectfully disagree. It's capitalism. Capitalism is what facilitated the creation of this forum: what gave the impetus for the formation of the grading services. The revenues that these activities produce, help get so many good things done.

Having said that, you're certainly entitled to your opinion.

Yep, it's called subscription service. Another forum at which I'm a member, (a HUGE forum, about 10x as large as this one), went to it a few years ago. When they announced it, you'd have thought Armageddon had arrived by the reaction of the members. In their case, they had no choice. It was either that or the forums were going to bankrupt the company.

Yes, the moving has to be quite a bit slower. Coins aren't supposed to move THAT fast!image

The fast movement makes me think that Pinnacle has already sold all of its coins and therefore no need to look!image

What I've always loved about this place was our instinct about who was here to generate $$$ and who was here for the longhaul. I've learned a lot from Anaconda, Mark (CoinGuy1), Laura, JadeCoin, and many others who put themselves out on the line to inform the collecting community. All I ask from PCGS is to make dealers work for their money, even if it's a very cleverly disguised plug. Let them devise their own banners in the guise of posts and let us decide.

I personally see nothing wrong with the banner. I only wish it were at the same level as the CU logo, so it doesnt make me scroll down any more. Other wise if it helps pay for the forum why not.

There was a banner on the BST-Sports Forum for a while, seems to have disappeared though, however that banner did not "move". I do find the "moving" banner a bit distracting, and already I find myself scrolling down far enough on the page so I don't see the movement. Were the banner stationary, I'd probably not scroll. image

The banner ad is okay in my book.

But, this particular one, as we say in the biz--is too busy.

I'm too high-strung to have that going on around me all the time.

I don't mind a banner, the the Pinnacle one is very distracting. If it was a static ad it wouldn't bother me at all.
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

I hate annoying banner ads. Pinnacles is clearly annoying.

I am all for capitalism and advertising, but this ad S$$cks. I will never visit their website or buy anything from them as long as that "thing" is at the top of my screen.

I would reconsider if it were not annoying.

I may even take a "vacation" from the boards - it looks too much like a "low rent" site now.

Okay, flashing adds are no problem with many of you. How would you feel about having to close pop-up adds every time you click on a post? That's the next logical step --- would you tolerate that?
