Ok, fess up, are you one of those overly-nice/kiss-up pushovers or, are you a mean spirited/slam the

coinguy1coinguy1 Posts: 13,484 ✭✭✭

Often times I see a forum member post an image of one of his/her coins and receive lots of ooohhs, ahhhhs and thumbs up in praise of their "prize". But, the coin is actually a cleaned dog or a scrubbed pig. image

Other times, wonderful coins are imaged/posted and some people nitpick them to death in a very unfair fashion. image

This isn't meant to pick on either group, but I wonder - which of you are more likely to be overly complimentary by nature image and which of you tend to be overly critical image, as a matter of habit?

A show of hands please? image

If Don, Russ or Ken posts a coin it sucks... Everybody elses coins are great!

That's true. Russ is certainly very educated and congenial. He exudes charisma and I think the boards are a better

I try to be nice, but will say if a coin does not look original to me. Just because a coin is low grade does not mean it is not nice. Naturally, a cleaned coin is less desirable than an original, but still a clean coin can be nice.

I try to give honest opinions most of the time.

To be honest with you, I tend to "praise" picture posts of coins from my favorite series (almost anything before 1900), and am unduly hard-nosed on those series I'm not particularly fond of. That's why I'm so down on "moderns" and modern Toned stuff.image

I think MadMarty hit it on the head a bit.....

I've seen it where a people will be nice to a certain poster no matter what....and also where they hold their tongue (NOT) for others.

So, I think some people are predisposed to be "mean" to certain others while "ooohhhhhing and ahhhhhing" their friends.

For me, personally, I comment on some coins that I like and take the time to (those I am interested in or know something about....I don't comment on 2cent pieces because I know nothing about them and don't really like their overall look nor do I comment much on dimes (too small for me to like much, although a rare few really stand out to me).
I don't think it is my place to "talk down" coins...but that is just me, I err on the side of politeness unless the poster is an @$$ image

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Depends. If it's a new collector and they need information, I'll post gently. If it's someone who has experience and they ask for opinions, I'll give mine in a straightforward way. I hope neither are perceived as mean-spirited. If I believe it will be, I just don't respond. In most cases, it's not the best opinion on the thread anyway. image

I have a problem with certain toned ones and the hounds of hell will jump on some, depending who posted them, and vise-versa. The oohhs and aahhhs are only delegated to a select few.

Depends on my mood or the post but I generally [not always tho] subscribe to the belief that if you can't say anything nice then don't say anything at all. Rather than give unwarranted praise I prefer to remain silent.

Thankfully, I'm neither. I say it like I think it when it comes to pics. Or I just don't post any comments. But I do see some odd responses to some pictures...
  • I generally won't slam someone's coin because if they post it, then they are generally seeking praise. If people are just "seeking praise", then it depends on the coin. I see a lot of very nice coins, but don't always respond. If I post a coin and ask for an 'opinion', then I appreciate all honest comments, and figure that's what others want also. BTW, if I haven't said it lately, you all have some very nice coins, and I really enjoy seeing them. Thanks!

If it is a 'show off' post, I typically only reply if I have something good to say. If it is a post looking for honest comments, I will give them. Most threads seem to fall into the former category.

Usually I don't bother to respond to such dribble. However since it's the "great" Mark Feld -- coinsuckupguy, I'm still not inclined to, but since he does bother to look at some of my "better than his" toned Peace $ I might as well.

Actually, I'm pretty honest. If its a great coin, I'll praise, if it sucks, I'll rip it -- only if it the coin belongs to an experienced Board member. I think newbies deserve a little more leeway with their purchases in the beginning. As I have learned, its takes a little while to develop a good eye.

I always love the "it's NT I swear" posts. Those usually get my more nastier side to come out.

If I like the coin, I'll add my favorable comments. If I don't like it, I normally won't say anything, with two exceptions.

If someone posts a coin and goes on about how great it is and I think it spent the first hundred years of its life a foot below the water line in a public toilet, I will make a negative comment.

I will also make a negative comment if someone comes on the boards bragging how he ripped a cherry, undergraded coin, and when I see the pic, it's obvious that the guy doesn't have a clue how to grade it, and in fact, he is the one that got taken. An example was a guy who thought he got a raw type coin that would grade MS 64 & from the pic, he would have been lucky if it graded AU 50 (and yes, he clearly overpaid for the coin).

There are usually two reasons for a person to show an image

of a coin. One is to merely share a coin with the Forum. In that case

most of us are nice and friendly and gentle. When a person asks for opinions,

then they are entitled to an honest opinion , even if that opinion may seem harsh.

You ask and you shall receive.

There are a lot of great coins that I don't comment on. If the owner likes it a lot
more than I do or if it really is a good coin but not outstanding, then I'll withhold
comment. Sometimes even the outstanding coins will not get a response if it seems
unnecessary or overly redundant. Very few bad coins get posted around here and
if you comment on every rare or gem coin you can spend your life typing.

Or maybe I'm just someone who likes hanging out with most image of the folks on the board.
