Do you have a coin nemesis? 😆

Well do you? ? A coin nemesis-
A person that is always bidding you up to the moon in a spirited, unfriendly manner. Someone you can identify only by the feedback number in eBay's bidding history, but he is certainly human if not inhumane. He shows you that he is determined to drive up the prices on all of your areas of interests no matter what, unafraid of holding the bag at the end.
You can't let him beat you, for you know he won't appreciate these things the way only you can! In fact, after bidding well beyond reason, should he win any item you will most assuredly find them for sale in his stale eBay store for 3, 4, sometimes 10 times the price he just overpaid on the same venue. Oftentimes, he doesnt even wait to receive the item, just steals the photo and lists it as his own. There, these treasures will languish for all eternity, a constant shameful reminder of your failure.
So, do you have a coin nemesis? Do tell.

Fun topic!
He barely recognizes me and I'm sure that most of this is in my head but John Agre has made me the underbidder on what would be (if I had won all three) my first, third, and fourth most expensive coins. One of them subsequently reconsidered from a green CAC to a gold CAC. Can you tell I'm still bitter?
@Coinbert has beat me out on a couple of nice coins although, again, I'm sure they loom larger for me than for him.
There are a few chopmarked trade dollar guys who I know well and consider friends and who won't let good coins go for cheap. But that doesn't bother me because at least the coins are with friends and in the circle of trust.

Pretty sure I know who yours is, DCW.
Of course. For the past five years it has been a back and forth. He wins some and I win some but in the end they are always bid up to full moon money. I finally met him not that long ago and had a good laugh about it because neither of us knew each other.

See, there's a funny story here. He's also one of my best friends in the BHNC, and we know we go toe-to-toe sometimes. I'm sure we've cost each other more than a few bucks along the way.
“We are only their care-takers,” he posed, “if we take good care of them, then centuries from now they may still be here … ”

I don't own the slug you pictured. I think this is the one that we were going after a couple of years ago. See you at FUN?
Ha, I absolutely have one. There's a bidder I keep running into on the same classic commemorative series I collect, and he seems to show up right when I find something I really want. I have lost at least three nice pieces to him over the last couple of years. At this point I build an extra 10-15% into my max bid whenever I suspect he is in the room. Does anyone else adjust their strategy like that, or am I just overthinking it?
There are a few collectors who I tend to run up against frequently in auctions, but we are all bidding against Galactus from Fort Worth.

I never bid till the end, and I always overpay - so I guess I AM the nemesis !
I have a couple of coins I recently sold. Same two bidders duking it out on all 5 coins. Crazy for them but a tinkling contest is good for sellers.

Well, I saw the words coin and nemesis.
It's not exactly what you're asking but it does relate to coins and a nemesis. I inherited a fairly large collection. I've been slowly going through it. I'm not a professional. This is all just a hobby for me.
My nemesis comes from within. Having something rare, scarce or significant (error, date, variety, condition, etc..) in the collection and not knowing it, continuously bites at my heels!

So true! I don't consider any of them a nemesis, but the days of picking up an unappreciated but rare chopmarked Trade Dollar or an unattributed 76-CC DDR or 75-S/CC are long gone because of these (great) guys.

Yes, you are correct of course, grabbed the wrong one. So many lost auctions to choose from!
I will be at Baltimore next month but I can't make FUN this year. I will be at the ANA in Chicago though.

Interesting thread... i don't know who the bidder was but a few years ago when I was actively putting together my Middle Date/Coronet Head set I was up against the same bidder several times. One particular ebay vendor had several very nice higher end XF/AU pieces up for auction. I was sniped on three auctions in a row, and one was for a particularly nice 1816 that likely would have graded higher AU. I really wanted that coin... a statement piece to start the Middle Date run... so, when this 1819/8 came up from the same dealer, and knowing my "nemesis" was also likely bidding, I upped my snipe bidding. In the last 2 seconds I got a pop up to increase my bid... and I did. I ended up winning this one, but the others that "got away" stung...

I hate the "thumb guy". He has ruined so many nice coins I would otherwise be in love with.

I have a feeling I may be someone’s nemesis especially if the auction coincides with Happy Hour.

Yeah... Forget that guy. Jerk.

Probably obvious to anyone that collects tokens and medals. This guy is always looking for a sucker.

An eBay dealer I've bid against a few times. He's got one coin where I was the underbidder listed at 2X the auction result, and I made a legitimate attempt to try to win it. It's one I wanted to complete my set but still won't buy even noticeably below his ask, or else he'll just keep running up hammer prices on future coins I want.
It's currently gathering dust in his eBay museum.
Guy sounds like a real bunghole

At the club auction last night one of the old timers was calling out another member for bidding him up on a lot of items. "Great minds think alike".
Well, well if it isn't my coin nemesis.
That seller has been banned from my auctions for cause for some time -- he even tried the back door with an alternate id. Bad news.
I never knew that nemesis is a synonym for "leech with a checkbook" but you're a better author than me. I'll accept the compliment.

Many bidders generally bid near auction close. So do I if am serious about beating them. It’s all fun and games.
Many players will put in a scout bid early on then near auc close go for for a win or walk away if it’s been bid up too high.
I don’t like nuclear bidders. When the gavel falls, one of us will be paying dearly. I’ve cost them thousands but have also been left holding the bag a time or two. That hurts.

Rip just puts in 2x CDN bid close to auc close and if he wins writes off the amt above bid to shop expense. Then down the line prices A,B,C coins accordingly via his special markup formula.
