Lovely surfaces, a great reverse crack, and a very original, unmolested look!

So, how about another ANA Pittsburg coin ... one with a very famous provenance, and for which a certain regular poster to this thread has a great infatuation with. Of course, his examples usually sit in holders that are 10 to 12 points higher in grade than this one, but hey … I’m just a regular guy who drives an old FJ Cruiser and paddles my boat.
One of the tell-tale signs of the Eric Newman - Colonel Green coins is the notable toning from long-term storage in kraft envelopes. This imparts a slightly different look depending on the grade and level of preservation of the coins when they were acquired, but the depth and variations in color that developed over decades of similar storage are pretty unmistakable once you recognize them.
Anyway, I have wanted one for some time, but either they are out of my grade range, or I have not been successful in trying to acquire one. That changed in Sheridan Downey’s auction in conjunction with the ANA show. Even though I paid up quite a bit (in my opinion), I felt pleased I got one of the two Newman-Green coins from the sale … and easily the one I preferred. Even by the former Owner’s account, who I had dinner with on Thursday evening while at the show, I got the better of the two.
He was surprised that he made almost no money on the sale of this one, and made a LOT on the other. Go figure.
On a side note, Eric P. Newman was also a noted Currency Collector, and many of his notes also show traces of light long-term toning, and without "improvement" (like some collectors favored, unfortunately). I am lucky enough to own one of those notes, a lovely “Woodchopper, Floral Seal $5”, and although I try not to get too carried away with Currency here, I’ll share it too.

Good Morning Everyone... shakin' the cobwebs out. It's been a heck of a September already with work... start of a new semester; one of my undergrads submitted our Abstract for the ABCRMS 2026 Conference in Seattle... poster prep for that project; completion of my 3rd year Dossier for Promotion and Tenure Committee; Submitting another grant (9 days to go); and I just learned the other day that I was selected for a Travel Grant to ABCRMS to serve as a Judge... and just yesterday, I was nominated to serve on our IBC... Carpe Damn Diem!!

There are two stories here. First, the "hard times" token is a privately minted 1837 copper piece created as an emergency substitute for small-denomination paper money during the panic of 1837, caused by Jackson's monetary policies.The second story and what motivated me to post was that I learned this weekend after buying the second one (MS64), that I already had the first one (MS63). I'm finding that now as my collection grows, even with a database in place, I am occasionally buying duplicates. I guess it shows that if I like something once, I'll like it again!

This example is a F-103 & was formerly part of Gerry Fortin’s reference guide. It’s rated R-3 & a medium date that slopes slightly upward with the “O” mintmark also of medium variety.

I very rarely buy items from the mint but the semi-quincentennial issues really grabbed me. They ended up being gorgeous designs and very well executed (despite some grumbling about the privy mark, it doesn't bother me).
But the whole 250th celebration really brought me back to my childhood of pulling bicentennial quarters from change. I've really enjoyed accumulating the series and am very happy to have them all together now.

@CivilWarBuff - Its graded VF20. It has alot more meat than a 20 IMHO. The coin is CAC'd as well. The picture is kinda dark and its not as dark as the picture makes it. It seems that VF grades are a great price point to collect Bust dollars. The hard part of collecting Bust dollars are finding eye-appealing original examples where the sell for a fair price. They traded at a premium over price guides but when available, you must act quickly. I feel that 90% of the Bust dollars have issues with them either cleaned, lack eye-appeal or have some sort of damage. This 1795 meets my criteria and I am happy with this one.

The wear is obvious on the piece but its originality and natural toning give it a high grade looks wise than the holder states. I can see why you were drawn to it. I thought it was xf until i realized the apparent wear.
