So, how about another ANA Pittsburg coin ... one with a very famous provenance, and for which a certain regular poster to this thread has a great infatuation with. Of course, his examples usually sit in holders that are 10 to 12 points higher in grade than this one, but hey … I’m just a regular guy who drives an old FJ Cruiser and paddles my boat.

One of the tell-tale signs of the Eric Newman - Colonel Green coins is the notable toning from long-term storage in kraft envelopes. This imparts a slightly different look depending on the grade and level of preservation of the coins when they were acquired, but the depth and variations in color that developed over decades of similar storage are pretty unmistakable once you recognize them.

Anyway, I have wanted one for some time, but either they are out of my grade range, or I have not been successful in trying to acquire one. That changed in Sheridan Downey’s auction in conjunction with the ANA show. Even though I paid up quite a bit (in my opinion), I felt pleased I got one of the two Newman-Green coins from the sale … and easily the one I preferred. Even by the former Owner’s account, who I had dinner with on Thursday evening while at the show, I got the better of the two.

He was surprised that he made almost no money on the sale of this one, and made a LOT on the other. Go figure.

On a side note, Eric P. Newman was also a noted Currency Collector, and many of his notes also show traces of light long-term toning, and without "improvement" (like some collectors favored, unfortunately). I am lucky enough to own one of those notes, a lovely “Woodchopper, Floral Seal $5”, and although I try not to get too carried away with Currency here, I’ll share it too.

Look at the note carefully and see what you could tender the note for. I got to meet him and what a heck of a collector.....
