I love these wholesome scarce collector grade coins! These grades are really hard to find the low mintage issues in!

However, the raised metal is not damage, it was not caused by an object hitting the coin and pushing up the metal. The raised metal was part of the the original strike and you can see it under magnification.

It's all PMD, as @yosclimber explained.

Hi Aaron!

Yes, for a details coin the 1843-O did well! It was sad to see it go, because it had such nicely struck up stars and central leaf detail. The other thing is that only 4 AUs and 2 BUs exist in PCGS as straight grades. The PCGS plate coin is an AU-50, which is not struck as well as this coin. However that one is certainly more valuable

Your 1847 is a V-4a or V-4b, based on the obverse die cracks. V-4b has light reverse die cracks at D, A1, S2, A2, and I'm not sure if they are there, based on the photo.
Your 1860-o is V-1a based on the mint mark position, crack to right ribbon, and lack of crack to corn leaf. It may be R-7 for this middle die state, although the cracks are light and difficult to see on older auction photos.

This is a fairly new purchase & only the 3rd Seated Quarter I own. The toning is exquisite & quite natural on this very lustrous tough date in the series. The gold CAC affirmation is not altogether surprising considering the minimal marks noted under strong magnification. I’m guessing this piece was held in a long time collection; the holder is pristine & appears to be freshly made.

Here is a picture of an 1876-CC Dime, Fortin-107b, courtesy of Coin Facts, with the so-called "heavy die rust" seen on several 1876-CC Dimes. Dan Owens and I have a two-part article in the August and September issues of The Numismatist that shows, among many other things, that this so-called "heavy die rust" is actually extreme acid damage to the dies.

The article reproduces a letter from Chief Engraver William Barber explaining that dies were supposed to be given a very light acid wash after being hardened, to remove the effects of being heated in the annealing furnace, but that the coin submitted to Barber for comment (possibly a Fortin-107b) had been struck from dies ruined by the acid. We believe that there is a good chance that after this incident the Philadelphia Mint began sending out dies to the branch mints pre-hardened, but that is the subject for another article someday.

As the result of this and other problems with the S and CC Dimes of 1875 and 1876, approximately 10,000,000 Dimes were melted and recoined.

Auction win:

This was a heavily minted issue back in the day, as the silver content was reduced to more closely align with the actual value. The influx of California gold had upset the gold/silver value balance, with silver coins being widely melted to purchase gold. However, the new design resulted in excessive die wear relative to coins produced. Relegated to a one year type, it’s very popular today with collectors.

I just received this today & while the GC photos are good & fairly depict the coin, it’s more lustrous in hand. I note some minor strike weakness among some of the right hand stars. Nothing serious. And, it’s a bit “dirty” in places, which I like. That attests to its natural state; this means (to me) “not messed with”.

and reverse cracks at T1, O, M, right stem.

Did you discover it was an F - 119 and submit it for grading? I see it is the PCGS Plate Coin! Nice strike too.
