Finished my Classic Head $5 Red Book set

Yesterday the final piece of the set arrived. A 1834 HM-9 Crosslet 4. I was lucky to pick it up on Instagram when Bryce (the YN dealer you see in a cowboy hat at big shows) posted it for sale. My ultimate goal is to obtain all 34 of the die marriages but completing this set marks a first set completion for me. I currently have 21 of die marriages and will continue the hunt.

Outstanding… my personal fav is that 38-c (the lowest grade in the set? But gorgeous original) but they’re all beautiful. Congrats!

I agree @GuzziSport I got that coin from @Desert Moon . It is one of only 4 known to not have the die crack on the reverse. A special coin in this set.

Thanks everyone for the kind words. I had forgotten until now when I checked the CAC pop report that there are only 23 Crosslet 4's with CAC approval and only 19 CAC 1838-C's.
It just hit me that there are only 19 complete sets like this possible. I collector I know owns 2 of CAC 1838-C's so there are even less than 19 sets out there.

Thanks @Typekat , I agree. That is a special one to me. Not only because of the look but also because it is a plate coin from the Classic Gold Coins of 1834-1839 by Daryl Haynor @Ronyahski and was part of his complete DM set. I strongly suggest this book to anyone wishing to learn more about gold coins minted in that date range. I was extremely lucky to have dinner with Daryl at the 2026 ANA in Pittsburg.

Fantastic set.
There are some significant (and scarce) varieties in this series, as you know.
I think the 1837 issue is under-rated, especially the "Script 8" (which I consider to be the "small date" variety).
Most 1837 Half Eagles are the "Block 8" (large date) variety.

Your 1836 $5 gold is a really great coin. I looked that one up, and it's only graded MS-62+. It looks like an MS-64.
Here's mine which is graded MS-61. It's really an AU-58+ IMP.
Thanks @BillJones . In hand it definitely looks like I could get a 63 but don't have plans to do anything with it. It's an amazing coin for sure. I like the look of yours as well. At quick glance it appears to also be an HM-6 like mine.

The second one I picked up in August was an 1836 HM-8 R4-. Another that I really like the look of. This originally came out of a Midwest collection but came to me from the East Coast.

This is the start of my QE set. I am trying to do the date set first, then????? For now the 1839-D is my favorite coin (for many reasons). Yes, the 1837's are tough. Mine is a 45CAC from the McCloskey collection (the M in HM).
