Ouch 🤨
UPS ...
Damn!
Crack them out of their slabs and it'll be nearly impossible to identify them as being from the stolen shipment.

Why in the world would anyone ship that much gold via UPS?
Because there insurance company required overnight and doesn't care which service?

Don't know how far it is from Austin to Dallas but....................UPS????

If they had sent it USPS Registered Mail it would have been slow but almost certainly have been delivered.
Just checked the distance, 196 miles, and less than 3 hours

That's 29 double Eagles or 29 ounces of gold. Hope whoever sent them had good insurance.
A touch over 28 ounces, actually.
Nothing is as expensive as free money.
That is a huge ouch, and I would be embarrassed to admit that kind of error.
196 miles?
6 hour round trip?
112,000 $ value..
First question, why not deliver in person and remove all the risk?
Second question, was it cheaper to insure it than pay a trusted employee/friend to make that trip?
Third, is there a chance this was a set up/scam all along?
I just can’t imagine someone willingly risking 112K to save 6 hours of their time…
I live 25 miles north of Austin and would have driven that easy round trip. Safer in my own hands with my .45 Springfield riding together. Hope they were insured.

You've never made that drive on a weekday obviously, let's call it a parking lot.
That much gold sounds better if shipped in multiple shipments, just saying
I would think they can follow the foot steps of this package. With the way things are done today there has to be a chain of delivery.
This is a major crime that no doubt falls under federal laws.
You'd have to be crazy to even try it.
I hope they find the coins and the person responsible. I can't see them getting away with it.

Why would it be federal? It never crossed state lines and it's a private carrier

Sounds like the plot of Smokey and the Bandit 4
What is numismatic crimes.org? Is that a private/for hire company?
I wouldn’t be surprised if the package was actually shipped by U.S.P.S. rather than by U.P.S., and just reported incorrectly.

If the sender has adequate insurance coverage, they weren’t risking anywhere close to $112,000.

If this was a business, non-collector transaction it’s unlikely that either party had the luxury of waiting two weeks for a registered mail package to show up especially for essentially bullion.
Agreed, and as far as I know, most businesses don’t ship by UPS. That’s part of the reason I’m thinking that the package might nit have been shipped by that means.

It's a non-profit that publicized thefts.

Because it likely used a federally funded highway, moreover it is inextricably linked to interstate commerce that need not actually cross state lines under a 1942 Supreme Court case that you must have slept through in law school, Wickard v. Filburn ( https://supreme.justia.com/cases/federal/us/317/111/ ), although the feds usually only step in when they have spare resources or it suits them for political reasons or some other random decision process. They do have the authority to do so.
That dollar amount would surely attract the attention of the FBI.
Im just going with my gut but I can't see the local youkals handling it.
If Mark is right and the USPS was actually handling the package then its a no brainer.

I’ve sold gold to apmex, they required my shipment to be sent by ups or fedex overnight before. Other dealers in Dallas might have same requirement.
They Feds can stick their nose into a lot of things. Are you saying there was anything in the details presented that would automatically trigger a Federal response?

I’m not saying that the package was shipped by U.S.P.S., but rather, it wouldn’t surprise me if that were the case.

Best of luck. I had a coin shipment stolen by a UPS employee and the company did little to find where it happened along the way. I was made whole by the sender but they were not happy with the lack of help UPS was in finding the person.

Wooooha! Did someone just say it's officially "TACO™" Tuesday????
Retiring at 55, what day is today?
No, if you read what I wrote, they can but are not likely to do so.
"the feds usually only step in when they have spare resources or it suits them for political reasons or some other random decision process. They do have the authority to do so."
I think ups put some type of tracking device on higher value shipments
Then, since we agree, why are we arguing?
