Surprised how quickly this came...no signed card...the COA came in the form of a little booklet!!

Docstore, is this the one you saw? The rim looks very similar to mine.

Yes, that was the the one -- it looked worse than yours. It's more "mangled" vs scraped. There was another one on this same page that just has a minor scrape at 12:00

EDIT: this started a new page -- so the same page as your pictures of the scrapes.

Should I go for refund or replacement. Do they recycle other returns? Thx

    Yes, returns are recycled.

This is not underwear, medicine, or a personal hygiene product.

If there is nothing wrong with it in the opinion of the layperson examining returns in the warehouse, as opposed to a PCGS grader looking for 70s, returns are returned to inventory for resale.

Since they have already sold out, anything available for purchase from the Mint from this point forward will be someone else's return. And, if it is "Unavailable" on the website, they will not even offer you a replacement.

Yeah, I noticed that too. Here's a closer view...the obverse looks okay. I guess it's Heads I win, Tails I lose.

Thank you all for the help and advice! I am not a flipper and was not planning on sending the coin for grading but as I am paying good money I would like to receive a coin from the mint without such obvious problems. I will send back for a refund. Kinda sad as I liked the coin and the medal. Thx to all!

  • Mark1010Mark1010 Posts: 18 ✭✭

One more question please. What would a proof coin with damage like mine on the rim be graded? .

Honestly, if you're not a flipper and wasn't going to get it graded, and you like the coin and the medal, there is no reason not to keep them just because the dime is not perfect. Perfection is not what they are selling, and lack of perfection is not a flaw for a coin sitting in a capsule sitting in a box. It's actually exactly what you bought.

I promise you, someone else will grab it, and be perfectly happy with it. You, OTOH, could go pay several hundred dollars more for a perfect one, it's that's what you need to be happy. Or else live without a coin and a medal that you otherwise liked.

when they are no longer available your only choice is refund.

it is possible to get a quality coin this late in the game

    i'll only say this.

you could buy a 70 off ebay and it could still have this problem

Yeah, a lot of the 2021 Morgans had similar issues on the rim (though relatively smaller on the larger coin).

Thanks again! A lot of good advice which gives me something to think about as I like the coin and really like the medal. The advice and opinions of the experts on this site are very helpful to us neophytes. 👍

I really don't mind...it's a small coin and that is hugely magnified to see it. My focus is really on the designs and fields...which look pretty amazing! I wasn't planning on grading this one anyway, but if I did, I imagine it would garner a 69 due to that rim.

Understood. So the alternative is now to spend hundreds of dollars extra to deal with a little OCD, OR to live without something you otherwise like. I'd not only keep it, but, if I wasn't looking to flip or grade, I wouldn't go looking for small imperfections in the first place. YMMV.

I was fortunate enough to get one that didn’t have those flaws. I’m keeping it, and if it did have a flaw I would also keep it. I’m going to attempt the whole set this year because I like it. (I also suffer from the OCD of completing a collection of something i started)

I neither expect 70s nor insist on them. Others differ I would agree with you if you weren't being so insufferable on the other thread. Lol

Luckily mine doesn't have the rim issue. But personally, if it did have the rim issue I would probably get one on backorder (as they have been available in the mornings), and then return the damaged one. Of course my backorder might end up being a prior return from someone else, or it might be a new one and have no issues. But at least I'd try to get a mint issue directly from the mint.

The ones in the morning now are 100% returns. Whether they will have this flaw, another flaw, or no flaw and just buyer's remorse is unknown. What is known is that what they are selling now are returns.

Could also be some back order cancellations going back into inventory.

Yes. I canceled one last week because I was tired of waiting. And since I'm not in the office much this summer, delivery there seemed riskier than it's worth.

But don't correct him, it makes him cranky and defensive.

This ^^^. In hindsight, I guess anything is certain possible. Also possible a virgin coin fresh off the press won't be perfect.

IMHO, not worth playing 70 roulette unless many coins are in inventory available for immediate shipping.

Yes, history with the Mint shows that returns that are deemed “okay” get shipped back out in the hopes that they end up in the hands of a collector that either doesn’t care as much for perfection, or doesn’t notice.
If you wanna play the 70 roulette, you do that at drop day and not at 7:30 in the weeks that follow.
