1875 and 1876 were interesting years for trade dollars when the mint was transitioning from the type 1 obverse and reverse hubs to type 2. 1875 seemed mostly orderly with a couple of type 2 reverses rolled out but 1876 was a cluster of different combinations and start and stops.
There are three attributed T$ varieties in proof, all from 1876; the type 1/1, the type 2/2, and the Four Finger (aka type 1.5/2, Transitional Obverse, or Recut Finger). When looking at mintages, if taking into account the various hub combos, the scarcest dates are 1885 (5), 1884 (10), and 1876 1/1 (30-35). True mintage of the 1876 1/1 is unknown but is probably no more than 35 and is likely closer to 20.
Some 1876 Proofs look like business strikes and some Philly BS look like proofs; not that surprising consider the re-use of dies. It can make identification difficult. This new addition was in an AU55 holder until I received it back from our hosts yesterday in a PR55 holder with the correct variety attribution.
In trying to think of something to show this morning, I decided I would post a tribute to the last time the ANA WFOM was in Pittsburg, in 2023.
Walking the floor, I found this coin ... and although the seller knew what he had (and had it priced rather aggressively), I couldn't get it out of my head. He had recently had the coin re-holdered with the Overton Number (it's an r.4+ DM) and I would need to send it back in if I wanted the sticker (it had one before, and I did). Finally I asked my friend @Pnies20 to come look at it with me to make sure I wasn't crazy.
He thought I was, kindof ... kidding (I think!) ... and I got the guy to come down a little closer to where I wanted to be. I still paid up, but it was one of the prizes from the Pittsburg Show in 2023. Hopefully there will be another one or two this summer.
Probably top 5 in the CC for this DM.

Do I get a “lateness break” as I’m traveling abroad? Didn’t think so, but I’ll go ahead anyway & start with a coffee story. Even though it’s England, they seem to know what a Black Eye is. Everytime I order one, there’s a guy behind the counter that yells out “black bull”. So I asked him what he calls a coffee with a triple shot & he says “a very black bull”.
Today I’m posting (finally) the second of my 3 buys @ CSNS:
This coin was so cool I had to buy it! The selling dealer wouldn’t let it go until I had a look at it, which I greatly appreciate. I know at least one dealer (hint: they’re based in OH & do a lot of CBH biz) that wanted it.
It’s actually cool x 2. One is the pincers 8 variety & two is the surface cleanliness & eye appeal. I’ll throw in the bean - no longer cool but always relevant.
I’ll be back home this Friday night & will post CSNS #3 on Saturday, so back to biz as usual!
Back home from a great trip & looking forward to my homemade redeye this AM!
Todays coin is the 3rd & last of my CSNS buys; it seems like the show was a long time ago:
The 1854-O Eagle with original surfaces is rare; at the AU58 grade level, it is extremely rare! The numbers bear this out - there are 12 AU58 CAC or CACG examples with only a sole 62 in higher grade. I can make a good case for this coin qualifying for a 58+ grade; there is no real wear with only a touch of rub on the obverse. It’s just as likely this is due to bank handling rather than any circulation as it’s so minimal.
There are no detractions; as said above, surfaces are original. Toning is a nice orange gold that enhances its eye appeal. This is an exceptional coin for this tough date!
Great coins, everyone. Happy Saturday to you, all! Here is a new one, and one of the prettiest civil war tokens that I've seen. It once graced the enormous collection of Dr. George Hetrich. He, along with Julius Guttag, wrote the first book on the subject back in the 1920s. Off the market for 100 years, had to pay up:
Stay caffeinated and enjoy the long weekend.

Happy Saturday! I’ve been slowly collecting indian quarter eagles at a rate of about one coin a year. Just added my 4th one.
When I think of coins graded 61, I tend to imagine baggy surfaces and lower eye appeal. But not so with this piece. I didn't know a 61 could be so attractive. (The trueview isn't terrible, but it also isn't good. The pic from Great Collections does a far better job of capturing the coin).

Hope Everyone is having a good Memorial Day weekend... I'm up at the York house this weekend. It's a soggy day... missed everyone this morning. I'm starting to accumulate these:
Collecting: Dansco 7070; Middle Date Large Cents (VF-AU); Box of 20;
Saturday AM with family in Houston; our youngest grandson’s 8th grade graduation was a couple days ago & I’ll say it was an impressive ceremony! RedEye as usual today - my daughter in law has the same unit I have at home:
Today I have a NEWP that qualifies as a classic:
Many years ago, when I collected coins found in change to fill my Whitman albums, the 1909-S VDB was elusive (like for most). In later years, I acquired a nice 65RD in a PCGS slab. It had a bit of woodgraining which actually enhanced its eye appeal. But, I sold it as I changed collecting focus.
Today’s coin is only the 2nd one of this classic key date I’ve ever owned. IMO, it’s a spectacular example! Full on RD with no issues; sharply struck & I would bet it’s 65 quality! Eye appeal is exceptional; with the OGH & CAC approval, this one’s a winner I’ll keep as is.
Good Saturday morning everyone! My favorite time of the week, Saturday morning. Spending a little time with the Seated Dollar collection. 1863 MS64+ CAC.

Good morning. Most my coffee is gone just catching up with this thread... Some phenomenal coins in here! I think I'm most in love with @Copperindian 's 1818 bust half in 63. That's THE LOOK for original, mint state surfaces.
I'm cruising through these while I'm at it.
I enlarged some of the holes so the set would fit. Next project on deck, but I still need to find the "gold" ones. There's a two cent, but not a three cent (but a three dollar "gold").
And I didn't realize until I put them in the holder that the 1¢ and $10 are medal turn instead of coin turn. Now I have to find out if they are all like that, or I have more searching to do...

Over the last few weeks between travels here and there I have pulled some boxes from the SDB and spent some time with coins that I have had for decades. Some of the sets probably need a new coin or two (now that the grading and crossovers have mostly been done).
Some of the coins still need to be seen by CAC. And while some won't go because, well ... I don't think they will bean ... some have and some will because, well ... I figured they will.
