Is AI Grading here?

Saw this ad in the new Numismatist issue. Not a lot of details on the website. I have to imagine all of the TPGs have been pitched already. Would they announce if they are using such a thing? As with all things like this, it looks impressive but the devil is in the details. Something like this will work for 98% of coins but not for that last 2%. I'm curious how they evaluate the mirrors of a DMPL Morgan.

MS65 with the cheek gashes?

Almost Incomplete Grading???

No, it isn't here yet.
Yes, however all are certainly not created equal. RGDS!

Wooooha! Did someone just say it's officially "TACO™" Tuesday????
Retiring at 55, what day is today?
Those scratches are almost bad enough to warrant a details holder!
MS 62 and that’s without knowing what the reverse looks like
It's unnaceptable for the OP coin to be evaluated as "MS 65". MS-65 is supposed to be "gem". One could drive their ATV through that gash on the cheek of this...gem.

Interesting that they chose that example for their ad.
Maybe they meant to say "Our machine misses what the eye sees."

Lotta words. Lotta claims. Nothing backing it up.
All their people are AI/Data Scientists/VC ... not a named numismatist in the bunch.

Next they will have the self grading holder that gives current CPG. As far as photo at top not MS65 imo. I question it would make 64.
I'd almost laugh ... but I'm not sure that hasn't been thought of somewhere (we know it has, at least by you) ... and the thought of that happening really isn't that funny.
Also, just for the record, that Morgan is an MS65 like I'm still a fit, stout and sexy 40 year old! And it might get worse when you look at the backside!!

I think those saying the coin is worthy of a MS62 or details grade are being overly harsh.
OK MS63.
In the "Our Story" they did say done over 100 interviews.....so there's that.
I wonder how their photos look?

MS63 if even makes that. Higher than that would laugh them off the bourse.
No MS65. Wouldn't mind an automatic cherrypicker app though.

Interesting article. This device might solve a lot of problems because it includes hardware and can use a consistent lighting and imaging system. No word if it would work on slabbed coins though. https://readingroom.money.org/computer-coin-grading-an-introduction/
I've heard of 3 or 4 different AI grading programs being worked on at this point. It's close but no cigar. Easy to program morgan dollars (easy, consistent), hard to program early type (differing strike, luster, mint defects).

I can see AI taking over encapsulation and shipping…
MS-65? The subject piece is a 62.....at most. 61might be a closer number. This AI is for the birds imo.

That's more a robot than "AI".

I can’t see it taking over encapsulation any time soon. I’ve done a little bit of sealing and there’s an enormous amount of tactile work that may be impossible to quantify in hard data. There’s also variables in parts that seem identical; quality differences that mean they need to be rejected, or change the way a coin can be sealed.
Also, if damage occurs now a lower wage human operator is called into question, if damage occurs with an AI powered robot an entire multimillion dollar system is called into question.

Never.
I would think there would be "electric eye" programs of sufficient pixel quality that would connect online, doing rigorous searches of high resolution databases comparing all the images based on surface quality, grade sensitive issues, luster, defects and problems, allowances for rarity, toning, etc.. Is this really that hard in 2026 with all the powerful AI systems out there?
It would need to be a new scale that somehow, and it's not impossible, gains a gigantic amount of credibility and endorsement.
I do not see collectors or dealers submitting high end material to a sheldon scale Ai program risking a downgrade. (Goodbye MS69 large cent).
The self grading holder is on the horizon.
What other grading programs have you heard about?
I don’t think it has to be all or nothing. Use AI for what it’s good at, e.g. grading modern coins and counterfeit detection (recognizing patterns from known counterfeits, etc), and let human graders do what they’re good at, which is combining the art and science of grading. AI is a tool the same way a loupe is a tool.
