Attending my first CSNS this weekend & I can see first hand why so many tout this one - it’s well attended in a nice venue + loaded with quality coins! I’ve added a few & will share them here over the next few weeks.
Red Eye Saturday is @ Starbucks. The barista shared a tidbit - a Red Eye is a coffee with a single espresso shot; with two it’s a “Black Eye”. A triple is either green or purple - she wasn’t sure about that. Who knew though?
Today’s coin is one I neglected to post here before:
I’ve said previously how much I like the Classic Head types, but this coin is extra special. It’s the first year of issue from the Charlotte mint & is very scarce in the AU58 grade, especially CAC approved.
Although the 1838-C’s are characterized by surface roughness, this example is better than most in that regard. The striking detail is actually good for the date. The coin has nice, lustrous orange gold color & what I feel is excellent eye appeal.
Good morning Saturday crew. I'm with @Inspired70 ... hot, black and rich coffee tastes extra good this morning ... and the weather has been grand here on the Coast. Was out on the beach last night for the sunset into the ocean, and up early this morning watching the rise over the bay.
Lovely coins this morning @Inspired70 and @Copperindian That's a fantastic cherry @DCW And @Crag, WOW! That must have been quite a surprise. A large-sized FRN from the bank?! Bring that teller their favorite coffee!!
.
I looked back at my post last week, when I was down in CA, and realized what terrible quality the final image was ... the one's that showed the coins (of course)! I didn't realize how bad the tablet was for coin images. But I think the reel box made up for it!
Anyway, here's six of those ten coins again this week ... as I was enjoying the box one last time before it went back to the SDB today.
.
The first image is of the two OGH 1809's. Amazingly, these are same Die Marraige (but different Die States) ... the AU50 is the rarer 106.1 (r.4) and the AU53 is the more common 106.2 (r.2)
.
.
Next up is probably the finest 27-116 out there (all things considered) and an intoxicating 06-119 that had some of the most hideous auction images ever (the advantage of lot viewing).
.
.
Finally, the two coins that probably stop the most hearts, my 11-103 and 21-101a. My friend Lance @lkeigwin didn't want to let the 1821 leave his house when I visited him during my travels.
And for those interested ... yes, he looks really good and seems to be adapting to his new reality very well, all things considered. He was in pretty good spirits too, and we had a great evening chatting, having pizza and bourbon, and doing some show and tell.
.
.
Happy Saturday!

As always, nice coins, everyone! I don’t have much to show off this morning. But I did recently pick up an unattributed FS-110 1936-S dime. It’s the controversial possible-overdate vs it’s-just-die-gouges variety.
Nice to be back home! About to have my Saturday Red Eye:
Today I’m posting the first one of 3 coins I picked up @ CSNS last week. As many have said, it was an absolutely fabulous show!
I own only one other CBD & that’s a large dentils example. Today’s coin is the Type 2 (small dentils). It’s the JR-6 variety with a normal date. VERY colorful with tones of aqua, rose, olive & a smattering of others! There is a strike thru on the reverse that’s likely from a wire. It runs from the eagle’s head & ends just to the right of it. Very cool! Stars are complete with full radials. Overall detail is strong, with just a few neck area hairlines keeping it from a GEM grade.
GM everyone and happy Saturday. Already played tennis and had 2 cups of coffee. I attended CSNS show and it was a real winner. Dealer reported that they all had one of the best shows ever. Lots a great coins available but it was still tough buying. I did manage to upgrade my Capped Bust dime registry set and will show another time when i can get good pic of the coin. One thing that made the show great was a Newman Society talk by Paul Hollis - the newly elected US Mint Director. Her talked about coins and our 250 birthday. Just fantastic. I got a chance to locate a 2026 dime and its gorgeous. Its not very often that I like modern coins but the Mint did a great job. Paul handed out his business card and the 2026 dime was included in the business
Enjoy-

A day late (and at least 50c short) ... but I caught a few yesterday before I got out on the water, and then, by the time I got home last night I was in the fall down mode.
As always, great coins! And what a lovely display @Downtown1974
.
I spent the better part of the week exploring, kayaking and fishing in and around Chelan, WA ... and had a wonderful time. Did one alpine lake that is really tough to get to, to a kayak in to (and really tough to get it out of!!) but caught at least 15 or 16 there (all hook and release). And Friday night I was out in the Northern part of Lake Chelan and caught some fantastic Cutthroat and a chrome bright Kokanee.
This one goes back a ways, and I don't show it often (not sure why, as I certainly appreciate her!). At the time if was the most I had ever spent on an CBH in AU50. Not sorry I paid up to put her in my group. The consummate "hot mess".

Greetings to all from London! No tea for me - it’s still Saturday coffee (on Wednesday)! . I’m here for almost two more weeks & might miss my favorite thread next two Saturdays. If I can manage a post I’ll continue with the second of three coins I picked up @ CSNS. For today, an unexpected but most welcome NEWP before I left:
The two series I collect most are FE’s & IHC’s. For the latter, this date, followed by the 1859 & 1877 are the ones I’ve bought & sold with the most frequency. Todays edition? It’s termed the 1864 No L or simply 1864 Bronze. It’s easy to obtain, as it represents a change in design & was minted in large numbers. What’s so special about this coin, though? One, it’s fully struck with barely discernible clashing - a very common characteristic of these. Two, the feather tips are full & the diamonds complete. Too often, that’s not the case. Three, the eye appeal is exceptional & it’s full RD. Very often, neither of those hold true even with examples graded 67 RD! Finally, frequently overlooked is the 1864 No L is a one year type (later in the year the designer’s initial “L” was added to the ribbon). Finally, finally it’s housed in the coveted OGH & has both the EEPS & CAC approvals!
Getting a head start for our favorite Saturday morning thread. it is 3:18 PDT on Friday May 8, 2026. My work day is over and I took a photo of a group of some of my nicer coins.
Good morning everyone! Saturday morning, my favorite time of the week!
Playing with some old early gold in old holders this morning and marveling simply at how these coins exist in 2026. Some really smart caretakers over the centuries!
I'm out on the East Coast this morning. Well not really the coast, but Frederick, MD. Interesting and lovely town overall.
I was here helping my company (love that part-time retainer check) on a customer's plant on Thursday and Friday, but I was able to visit Gettysburg on Wednesday. I had never been there. Hallowed ground, for sure. Wish I would have had a little more time (I got there in the early afternoon) as there was a lot to see, but it was also almost overwhelming at a spiritual level. Three dark days happened there, and I could definitely feel the winds of time echoing the past.
Since I don't have any coin images this am, and the hotel coffee, while good, is not image worthy ... here's a couple shots from Wednesday.
“We are only their care-takers,” he posed, “if we take good care of them, then centuries from now they may still be here … ”
@Inspired70 That 1795 $5 is everything, I love it.
There was recently a sale of one of the best (if not the best) collections of chopmarked coins in the world. Prices were strong and tough decisions had to be made. I ended up with a handful of coins, this being my favorite.
It's difficult to find chopped Philly coins of any series as the geography made it much more likely for SF (and CC) coins to find their way to the Orient. For US coins, there are not many pre-1854 coins that are chopped either, for a similar reason.
Now add in that this coin is absolutely perfect...

I love Gettysburg! If you have some time, Antietam is a very short drive away.
Last time I visited I walked the field retracing Pickett’s Charge. It’s a helluva long way to the Union line. As I did it a bunch of youths in uniform made the charge doing their version of the rebel yell. Quite the day for thought and very humbling.

Thanks! It's (overwhelmingly likely) a Chinese merchant chopmark, rather than a counter mark, that is also the English letter H, not a Chinese character. It's not uncommon for chops to be English letters or pictograms or heavily stylized.
