Do you ONLY have US coins in your collection?

jmlanzafjmlanzaf Posts: 40,335 ✭✭✭✭✭

This is the US coin forum. We'll assume everyone on here collects US coins, at least in part. My question focuses on other coins you may collect.

I'm ignoring paper money.

Colonials count as U.S. and, for the sake of argument, colonial era circulating foreign coins collected for that reason.

All exonumia will be considered "coins" of the country of origin.

All comments reflect the opinion of the author, even when irrefutably accurate.

I have 90+% US coins but a smattering of other countries coinage.

I only collect US coins on purpose. I have some foreign and ancient coins that have come to be in my possession. I plan to keep them, but don’t plan to buy any.

Edit to add that my wife likes cheap ancients and my daughter likes foreigns with animals on them. I buy those for them sometimes, but don’t consider that to be my collection.

I have mostly US coins but quite a few non-U.S. coins.

Much of my collection is U.S. coins but I also dabble in Spanish colonial and ancient's. My ratio is about 70:30 in favor of U.S. coins.

My foreign coins consist 99% of coin types that circulated, or may have circulated, in the US prior to 1857. Many are traditionally collected as colonials, many were legal tender in the US. I consider them simply an extension of my US Federal type. Also have territorials, domestic colonials, CW and Hard Times tokens. Also own a pretty extensive collection of 18th century European medals. And a little currency and stamps that tie to coins. Sold all my US series and Lincolniana. Everything numismatic is fair game.

Not sure how to vote, my type set consists of all US coins and Philippines as a US territory (the coins say "United States of America" and 1883 Hawaii coins minted by the US mint

    I only have US coins.

I "voted" that I have only US coins in my collection. But I do "collect" coins and paper money from countries in which I vacation. I treat those items more as mementos than as part of my collection.

Mostly US Type and Series but I do have a smattering of foreign coins and currency. This one was found in my grandmother's effects after she passed... my family immigrated to this country in 1845. I also have a stack of Uzebek Cym banknotes that I kept after a few consulting trips to Central Asia

I voted for the last option, though "a little US" is perhaps relative.

I'm in Australia. America is "just another foreign country" to me. But because of American coinage's longevity, the proliferation of different mintmarks, and the fact that since WWII there's been a lot of travel between America and Australia, I've managed to acquire rather a lot of American coins. With about 800 American coins out of a total coin collection numbering 15958, America is the most numerous "foreign country" in my collection. Great Britain comes in at number 2 with about 700 coins.

In terms of the proportion of total expense paid, the American collection isn't as significant; High-end (classic and/or high grade) American coins simply aren't worth the ridiculous prices being asked, so I tend to spend my money elsewhere.

The majority of my collection is US coinage, but there are some random foreign pieces that I appreciate for the designs and/or history. I have a 9-coin 18th century British set in mind, but I’m just one coin in so far and need to get around to defining the specifics of what else to look for.

I’m also ignoring bullion, where I have some modern silver and classic gold from other countries in addition to US-made coins.

Mostly US but a set of Canadian large cents as well as a smattering of world bullion coins. Would the 1847/1883 Hawaiian series count as US or non-US?

    I only have US coins.

    I'm 99% U.S.

I do have a bag of foreign coins that friends have given to me over the last 35+ years, as many have traveled the globe. I honestly have very little interest in them. That said, I do find Canadian and Mexican coinage somewhat interesting, but not enough to plunk down any cash.

My primary interest and collection is US. However I also collect (on and off in phases) various other sets. UK by intent, Mexico by regional relevance, Canada by accident, my own tokens from my own mint, various old coppers, some Byzantine, set of all mint marks from around the world, set of coins made by the U.S. for other countries, Philippians coinage from 1903-1945, and more. But U.S. is always my focus.

Mainly a US type kinda guy but world designs are tough to beat. If and when I do pick up a foreign example it's typically something rarer to justify it. Low mintage, survival...etc. I dont collect much foreign "junk" silver.

None of choices fit. A considerable portion of my collection is U.S. coins, but I have a pretty large collection of British coins with for almost every Spink listed king from Alfred the Great to present. I have all of the Roman emperors up to about 400. It gets very hard after that. I also have many U.S. tokens and medals, concentrating on the 19th century.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

No. I have a modest collection of silver coins from around the world going and use the NGC World Coin lookup page quite frequently.

All of my set building is US coins, but my broader error collection includes a little bit of everything from tokens to foreign to exonumia. Basically, if you can manage to screw up minting it, I'll take an example.

Most of my collection is US coins with 2nd largest being world coins minted by the US mints. In 3rd place is coins from the Soviet Union (commemoratives only) and a few coins from the holy land going as far back as time of Jesus.
