Hmmm. Surfaces just don’t look right. Has an unnatural and manipulated appearance. The motif is granular while the surfaces are smoothed and blurry.

On a slight tangent, what do you guys think of these 'off-brand' auction sites (don't mean to insult anyone, just lesser known than GC/HA/SB, like Proxibid and Auctionzip are 2 others). Are they worth keeping an eye on for actual collector coins?

It would be a firm pass from me. It’s either a lot of work with Photoshop, or the surfaces have been manipulated considerably. Either way it’s a no go for a straight grade, and would be coin I would never like if I owned it.

I have two Bust Dollars which are graded AU-58, You can agree or disagree with the grades. The 1800 was gaded EF-45, 50 years ago.

Slabbed are fine, but due diligence is crucial before sending payment to any of the outfits on here.

If I were searching for something generic that is frequently found elsewhere, I probably wouldn't look at these sites. In my experience, there's rarely a bargain on the material where prices are easily established, and even if you think you're reading a photo properly, if a coin should be slabbed but isn't, there's probably a good reason. All of that is to say that it's unlikely you're getting a particularly good deal, so why add some risk?
On the other hand, I maintain some searches at these types of sites for very niche material that may unknowingly get listed. If you can outsmart a seller and the other buyers, there can be deals to had... but you really need to know what you're doing. As far as getting a deal and making money goes, I'm probably not winning by taking time to look at these searches. But for the chance to pick something for my collection that very rarely becomes available, this is just a part of the hunt, and as long as I'm hunting, if I see something (even in a different area) where I can win, I don't have a problem placing a bid.

My grade was not based upon the opinion of a grading service, but upon a Superior auction catalog when the piece was last sold in public. That piece is a Bolender 20, which is a very scarce die variety. It is the discovery piece coin Bolender found, and it is the plate coin in his early dollar did variety book. It is now tied for the finest known. I bought it at the 1976 ANA Convention in New York, and have held it since then.
