    Charles, These odd spitting eagle varieties are errors not varieties, what's next we start adding cuds or brockages or braodstikes as varieties. Just my 2-bits.

      It's a fair comment. The truth is, PCGS already recognizes the 1983-P Spitting Eagle and has encapsulated about 100 of them. Much like the "Bugs Bunny" Franklins or "Talon Head" Ikes, they are actively traded and collected for what they are.

      The spitting eagle is a variety, not an error. It's a die clash, so classifying it is akin to classifying a die state. Cuds are also not errors, they can also be classified as varieties (if classified at all) as they are also related to die state. Errors are related to the strike of the individual coin, not the state of the die. Brockages and broadstrikes are thus errors.
